New VW eUP! review - the anti-Tesla EV? // Jonny Smith

- Why do I think this could be the anti-Tesla EV? Simply because the 160 mile new VW e-Up! is a very simple package - an EV for non tech freaks perhaps? It is an electric car that doesn't so much celebrate technology, but feels pleasantly analogue for a new car with new lithium-ion drivetrains that lives beneath.
In the previous CarPervert episode I waved goodbye to my 2018 e-Golf long term test vehicle. I had become accustomed to the familiar Golf driving experience, married to a 120-140 mile EV range. This is the new 2020 revised VW e-UP! electric supermini. Its battery pack has increased significantly since its 2013 launch - from 18.7kWh to 32.3kWh - and with that the crucial real world range.
The Up! itself is now a 10 year old car, but doesn't feel it. This e-Up! costs just under £20,000 new, and so it is priced similarly to a nearly-new VW e-Golf. The Golf is more luxurious and spacious, but the cheekly little e-Up! beats its WLTP for real world range.

Am now adding 'bollock porridge' to my vocabulary, thank you.
Thanks to the Smith and Sniff podcast I'm here for the 'bollock porridge'!
“This has been quite a sensible review”
Best thing about this? An actual handbreak that will work regardless of electronics.
Just found this channel , brilliant content , good luck to our British neighbours during this time from Ireland 🇮🇪
I can't believe VW don't supply a stick with the car!
My Mrs has a 2013 VW e-Up. Just a couple points:
Great review Jonny, as usual!
This is the kind of EV I am waiting for. Back to basics. Like my base model Accord with a different drivetrain. I don't want any luxury items.
Where's the USB again? I missed that.
Love the Basil Fawlty moment with the charging port. :o)
Who's also annoyed by the window rubber not sitting properly.... ? Maybe it's just me.

I quite like the 'leave the infotainment and nav functions up to the user's phone' design. I mean, try as they might, car manufacturers are always going to suck in that aspect compared to smartphone manufacturers, and you cut costs. Plus, getting a better phone means you upgrade your car´s nav system as a bonus, and each family member that uses the car gets their own custom thingies.
with Romanian government grants, i bought my 2020 E UP for 10,000£ (12,000€)

Thank you Smith and Sniff for bringing me here! Laughed muchly!
Couple of corrections . the e-UP has only ever been available in a 5 door . And the pre facelift models were available with CCS but as an option.
Hi Jonny,
