Set in the future, the story follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as "the Bugs".

Late 90s was the golden age of CGI and practical effects being used together.
I was lucky to watch that movie in the big screen. The non-stop action and the groundbreaking effects in that time turned poor acting and an ill-written story into a hit in my country.
Most CGI today is shrouded in darkness, the scenes are so dark.

Something that even most realistic war movies don't portray is that death is not pretty.
She didn't died saying something cool and closed her eyes like a princess. She died scared while begging Rico not to leave her, her eyes looking into nothing, desperately trying to breath.

@@Igarappappa it bothers me a lot. Because they clearly had medics the first time on P. Plus the tech they fixed him with most likely was hand held as well. Should have brought her on the boat and immediately stabilized her.

heavy weapon like those, those two likely killed as many bugs as most of the rest of the dudes with rifles put together, the outpost would've been overrun before pickup arrived, without them manning the cannons.
imagine if they killed their own officers like in Vietnam, they wouldnt be there in the first place and would have lived a happy peaceful life most likely. The over the top violence is pretty funny in this movie though.@@BrandonL337

What i loved about this scene is how you could tell the troops were getting better at killing the bugs (compared to the first encounter) but they were still getting overwhelmed due to the sheer numbers of them. Fucking love this film!
I think something was said about them getting better ammo after that 1st encounter. Klandathu was regular or armor piercing bullets but after that they switched to explosive rounds. Something like that
Part of the point of this movie is that the human tactics are utterly stupid. It’s all just infantry with small arms fire. There are no tanks. Air bombardment happens once in the entire movie. There are no combined arms tactics which have been known since at least World War 2 if not earlier.
Remember the movie is a satire. Everybody here is an idiot.

Dizzy's death is the hook of the movie. Up until then it's been almost a comedy. Now you're emotionally invested in seeing them complete the mission.

Gotta respect Zander for getting out of the dropship with a rifle to help the evac! Guy was kinda a douche but he was heroic at the end of the day.
I love making fun of him up to this point though. "Carmen, you gotta let me hit it. Please. The only other woman I know is the captain and she's old like twenty five or something."
He still had professional courtesy. After all, his beef was with Rico, not the Roughnecks. No sense in punishing everyone just because of a single man.

You see the first guy get decapitated by flying bug and think "wow that guy was unlucky" but then it happens again and you realise "oh, that's a thing that they do"

It is the best documentary on the flora and fauna of Australia that has ever been made.

Incredible how Helldivers captured this moment. The slow, overwhelming numbers of bugs making their way through. The eventual collapse of the extraction point and the ship finally making its way down, starting the countdown till departure. To top it all off the aftermath as they fly off and leave, big and small bugs infesting the area
Y'know, for all his boistering earlier in the story, Zander really earns his stripes here. He lands with Carmen in the middle of a bug swarm to save maybe 2 dozen people and just immediately jumps into action to cover their retreat. He's literally the last on board and helps fly them out, not to mention staying by Johnny's side for Diz's passing.
Pretty badass for the smarmy pretty boy he's portrayed as in the first half of the film.
Also, he’s completely covered in Sweat from running and gunning, while Carmen is completely dry, because she sat in the cool Cockpit.
@@shivalah honestly Carmen is the true villain of the story. What does she even do, but sit in a chair and get shanked at the end. Dizzy deserved better

the color correction style of the 90s movies help blend the early CGI too
A movie from 25 years ago held up better than any MCU film, even from a couple of years ago.
MCU films initially stood up, then from probably around 2017 CGI across all films, not just MCU just suddenly got rubbery, it had more detail but the physics seemed off.
Look at Iron Man 1 where he is in a warzone or fighting Iron Monger, the impacts feel real and movements were natural, then compare it to Infinity War or Endgame@@TheGOAT-hj6sl

Everytime I think I have seen everything in the movie, a new detail pops up.
I always thought Ace followed Rico when Diz got impaled, but you actually see him LEAVING the ship as Rico yells in terror and begins shooting at the bug.

Technically, the Mobile Infantry wouldn't even be fighting on foot: they'd be using flight-capable power armor with an entire suite of weaponry, up to and including low-power nukes. That's the book, though; the director of this movie, I'm pretty sure, never even read the book, he just had someone do it for him and give the cliff notes, on top of the fact that Starship Troopers is a commonly misunderstood story. Instead of it explaining a truly liberal society based on merit, the director made it a tongue-in-cheek satire on fascism, which is the polar opposite of the book.
@@LabTech41the director did read the book, but stopped midway because he really disliked it. The movie was at first supposed to something completely different anyway, but had the label of starship troopers slapped on it midway through writing.
The director understood the book as potraying a govermental system based on violence and force as functional and even good, and he really disliked that notion due to it being somewhat similarity to nazi germany, which invaded and occupied his country during ww2.
So, he made the movie a satire.

Honestly this isn't far off in Suicide Mission and above difficulty, I specifically renember multiple times in terminid control where I barely make it as the last person alive with no reinforcements to extraction as hundreds of bugs are swarming me and bile titans try to skewer me

Not sure if pulling the broken off arm that impaled her was the right move. I feel it might have helped her live a little longer letting it sit. Yet, the panic of the moment made it a realistic decision.

Remember though, she got stabbed a total of 4 times with those giant claws and only one stayed imbedded so that's 3 other massive holes in her chest cavity

She was honestly dead no matter what they did, with how enormous that arm was embedded into her body, it at the very least punctured a lung, ruptured organs and would likely have died from shock

More than 20 years since I watched this move when I was a kid, and this part 3:40 with the epic score and all never fails to give me the chills. Such an underrated and misunderstood scifi classic, with state of the art CGI and practical effects.

Yes!! That's Basil Poledouris - the man was an absolutely legendary composer! He created the scores for Conan The Barbarian (and Destroyer), Hunt for the Red October, Robocop, Red Dawn, Quigley Down Under and so many more! But my favorites are definitely Starship Troopers and the Conan films. Epic music for epic stories!

I thought the first fight at Klendathu was the best. You follow the troops through training and they are super confident and they get to their first fight underestimating the enemy and it was pretty epic

I liked this battle scene so exciting
I remember as a kid-teen (tween?) I was at my brothers, fell a sleep on their couch and woke up to this and them sleeping. No idea the context, (I woke up 1/4 way through) but, I legit just sat up, and watched the entire film. Didn’t try to change it knowing how, I don’t know why I felt compelled at the time to finish this movie.

remember the recruitment officer? "mobile infantry made me the man i am today!" that is, half the man he was, considering the robotic hand and whatnot.
i doubt the leg prostheses would allow for 100% combat effectiveness, he would probably be unfit for military service at that point, and in the society depicted, no good at all; he has nothing left to live for. but like other commenters said, he's probably in immense pain, and probably going to have PLS and chronic pain for the rest of his life.

Because it is made with dedication, time and some practical effects...
Mostly because the CG shots of the bugs show them at a reasonable distance so you can't make out any imperfections. When they show close-up shots of the bugs it's a real puppet.
Because this movie wasnt made under sweatshop conditions and their CG team weren't spread out between like half a dozen other movies at once
Because the inadequacies of CGI in that time actually complemented the insectoids. They made them look glossy and alien...which is exactly what you'd want.
Big movie productions are a gravy train; inflated prices on every level.

Keep in mind, the greane blew up like that because it was inside the Tanker's reservoir, which is highly inflammable or combustible.
