A lot of things happened in the year 2004. Mark Zuckerberg launched a new social networking platform for Harvard University students, which would go on to be renamed as Facebook; George W Bush is re-elected as President of the United States, defeating his democratic challenger John Kerry; and preliminary hearings began in the trial of Saddam Hussain for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In sport, Michael Schumacher won his seventh, and last, Formula One World Title with Scuderia Ferrari; The Olympics returned home as Athens hosted the Games of the 28th Olympiad; and Portugal hosted the European Championships, which would be won by the biggest of underdogs in Greece. On the subject of football, 2004 would mark the 100th anniversary of FIFA, the sport’s international governing body. As part of the celebrations, Brazilian legend Pele was asked to choose a list of the greatest living footballers, which was unveiled at a gala ceremony in London on the 4th March 2004.
