  • Nice Trams!
I finally pick up the InterRail catalogue once again, starting with the trams of Nice, Southern France.

Those trams are ace, When I was on them a Woman brought her cat in a rucsack on the tram and a woman brought a Massive Microwave on the tram right in the middle of rush hour 😂

Those short strips at 18:00 min are a third rail system. In Sydney, they put one short strip after another. A short strip is only live while the train passes over.

FYI Line 2&3 have no wires because they didn't want to pollute the view with wires. At each stations there are quick charging "3rd rail" (what you show in pictures) + the team's battery recharge each time the driver slows down.

When I go to Nice and see the trams, I'll say "Regarde il y a une rame de tramway!"

What a lovely place. We've fighting for a tramway here in Manila!

We have a 1600 m no-wires section on the Sydney CBD tram line - they used a third rail which cost about $200 m to install due to moving the electricity mains. Our silly government refused the battery option.

At 17:50 "I wonder if these have anything to do with it"
To answer you, the Nice trams line 2 runs completely without overhead wiring outside the tunnel. In that situation, it runs with supercapacitors and an emergency battery in case the supercapacitors run out of juice. Those "magnets" you see at the tram stops are the power supply and when the tram calls at that stop, then it is directly stopped with a contact shoe on those charging points.
It's a tactic that was developed by Alstom for this line named the SRS and allows charging in just 20 seconds at every station that is equipped with it. You'd also notice that the junction between lines 2 and 3 being a potentially long stop waiting for a tram to come through, the slot in front of the junction signal also has those.

I recently visited Nice in April this year, I really liked how efficient the service was, I had never had to wait more that 5-10 minutes each time I wanted to use the tram.
Also, a nice touch is the different voices announcing the stops names and the lo-fi or instrumental music within the anouncements.
The only downside is that it can get absurdly crowded even on slow days.

It has been over 12 years since I visited Nice. My youth hostel was closest to Jean Médecin. I think between Masséna and Cathédrale / Vielle Ville, line 1 runs with the pantographs down, from what I remember. There was a terminus called Las Planas but I think it was since renamed to Henri Sappia.

It would be good if the Nice trams ran all the way to Monaco again like the used to 100 odd years ago!

    • @AlasdairMacCaluim

Yes - there was a small internal tramway system within Monaco 🇲🇨 that later joined up with the Nice tramway system in France 🇫🇷! I found out about it by accident while researching the railways of the European micro states. There are some good photos of trams 🚋 outside the Casino in Monte Carlo.

If it is but a "short" train journey between Paris and Nice, it must have been massively speeded-up since I last did it.

You will note the trams are slow when they do an 'S' movement as the radius is small and thus the forces to flip the train high, or alternatively, catch on something and come off the rails.

fun fact about the trams from line 2 is that when there were the yellow vest protests, its designer came to nice to protect what he called "its baby" from the riots.

How can you adopt a policy that targets the tourist industry that Nice relies on. Purposely targeting tourists who don’t know having purchased a tram ticket it’s in valid until you scan it. Then employ storm troopers to intimidate and take your passport unless you pay the €40 fine. This is shameful and now I will do my utmost to ensure this is widely communicated. Shame on you
