I love the old fashion jerk rig! I use a I bolt my feet to keep the line down when you pull on it.. ive gotta call in one hand jerk rig in the other telling the dog to sit getting ready to grab the gun.

I use one every day!! In the timber, I will just strap the bungee to a tree across the hole. It gives you tons of action and don’t have to mess with an anchor. This technique is very nice for walk in holes cause you can cut out toting a heavy anchor in.

I use a jerk rig with a 3/4 pvc pipe as the anchor pole. The flexibility of the pvc gives the bounce back. Just eliminates the need for the bungee and don’t have to switch them out every year. Keep the great videos coming!
How long is the pole? And you just drive it in the mud?

I duck hunt my local river,bought a Rig em Right jerk system many seasons ago with intentions of using it,but in the constant moving water,to much debris(twigs,leaves) tends to collect on the line and really kind of defeats using it.

I've repaired hundreds of decoys that have shot holes or small leaks with a simple squeeze tube of silicon simply apply it with your fingers. If you have a bunch to do at once a whole caulk tube is good but the problem with getting an entire caulk tube for small jobs is they tend to set up. You can get a squeeze tube of it with a screw on cap and that is what I keep on hand for before season touch ups and in season fixes. Hope this helps someone save some decoys and money.
I'll take a jerk rig over a Mojo any day of the week.
Jerk rigs are great. If you fly fish you will be familiar with the nail knot it is a great way to tie off to the bungee and is very strong. Great video keep them coming.
I like using a old cast iron window weight and a fairly long piece of bungee cord then I use para cord for the line. Dad showed me how to use it over 45 years ago and still working good today.
I like your idea of getting a bigger rope on the end.
We hunt some fairly deep water most often and posts don't work as well.
I've made my own for years, purchased RigEm Rights jerk cords, but the best one I've found to buy would be a Motion Ducks spreader.

I live in Wyoming though. Getting action into my decoys isn't much of a problem in the Wyoming wind. In fact, I am considering attaching 5 pounds weights next year......lol.

I use a boat blind. If i want major ripples I slip a canoe paddle under the edge of blind between blind and boat.
I twist it back n forth like a may tag washer. Ripples? Oh yeah.
I use a jerk rig too. Use a trotline reel thing from walmart.
Hey Mr. Producer Sir, what diameter/type rope are you using on the jerk rig shown here? It looks like a braided rope. Quarter inch or bigger? I'm assuming poly so it dries out between hunts and doesn't get funky?
Thanks, I got a few ideas from this! Here's a couple things I have tried that help manage jerk cords. First, it drives me crazy when you go to wind up the cord and the line twists and wont lay nicely on the spool, kind of like when your fishing line is twisted and backlashes. I got a 200' chalk line reel and put dark line on it. For deep water with rocky bottom, fill a cotton sack with rocks. Tie it off with a loop of hemp string. Tie your jerk cord to the loop. Toss the sack in deep water. The hemp string is strong enough to put up with being jerked on, but if it breaks when picking up, all you are out is an old cotton sack, which is biodegradable. If using a spinning wing decoy, you can tie off the jerk cord to the spinner pole.

I usually make a quick slip not over the head of the deek. Or make a small slip knot and use the rig clip to ckip it to the slip knot hole
Your clip on the jerk rig is called a long line tuna or Marlin clip. I use the mojo four spreader decoy and use it on my jerk rig. Dozen decoys out using just three clips. My bunker cord is 66’ long,100% stretch. I swim the rig instead of jerking it. Nothing better!
Great video! The only thing that would make it better would be shots of ducks decoying to the jerk rig, and being shot.
Like to wrap it around a few of their heads if in shallow water to give feeding effect
Hey Joel had a quick question, I was always taught to take a couple of forked sticks and stick them down in the mud to keep the cord from coming up to the top of the water, have you ever had an experience where you thought the cord on top of the water flared birds? Thanks for the great video!
On the blinds where we have permanent jerk rigs installed we use anchors with ring that secures the cord near the bottom. I’m not sure that the ducks notice or not, but it makes us feel better... plus it makes it easier to walk around in the decoys (not tripping on the cord).
in the timber or marsh without a blind ... I will hide standing next to a tree or high weeds / brush and loop the pull cord around my foot. I move my foot back and forth with the "bobbers" and get action and ripples...sometimes I think ducks that have been called to a lot do better with just feeding chuckles and motion
I love the video. I’ve never seen a few ties the way that you do. I use one pretty often. I have a spot in my blind bag that I always keep one with me. It’s an essential piece of gear that I use every time I go. How do you feel and the motion ducks feeder and spreaders? Do you think they make a difference.
I've never used that brand, but they do look good. I have used spreaders for years, they work well but you have to take care of them. I keep bending and breaking mine LOL!
Being that you hunt several different habitat types (at least 2 in flooded timber & marsh), could you do a video on your thinking behind how you set up your decoy spreads for the situation and habitat? I know everyone makes those types of videos, but I'd like to get your thinking on them. I try to avoid "typical" decoy spreads like J hooks and the like, and go for a more realistic approach. From the looks of your spread in your video, it looks like a realistic type setup too, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts and reasoning behind decoy placement and setups.
Thanks, yeah I shot a video back during the season that will address much of what you are asking. I'm planning on putting it together in the next month or so.
Do you think it’s okay to use older, junkier decoys on your jerk rig? My assumption has always been to use my crummier decoys on the jerk rig since they’re moving around and such and maybe not so noticeable.
I don’t use a jerk rig enough. Cumbersome on a boat especially if you have to motor out to chase one. I might take your pole idea for the boat end of the line so I can hang my spool on that while chasing.
Put a float jug or bumper you can drop/leave overboard while you move and return to . Just don't forget and run over your line.

Great set up! This one is much easier to set up than mine, I'm switching over next year.
I still have one but hate it and dont use it because without fail the dog gets tangled up in it retrieving. So I got battery powered ripplers. Also dont like messing with cord in freezing water.

Never used a jerk rig but I have used quiver magnets. Does't the long line present a hazard for the dog? Thanks for the video.
I guess that’s possible, but I’ve never known of anyone having serious trouble with a dog and a jerk rig.
They’ll get tangled up in them on occasion. That and pull string flappers also. But I wouldn’t consider it a hazard. More of a pain for us to untangle and just another element to deal with. Here in Oregon we can’t use anything battery operated
QUESTION: Do you every worry about the string being seen by the birds?

They are called Long Line clips - Designed for fishing long lines at sea , clip on line hook and bait . Come in several sizes and are available widely .

@@ericcraine4931 you can also google decoy clips too. Lots of options out there. These clips are great for deeper water (over knee deep) but if you hunt in really shallow water, they do not work as well- which is why I only use them on the "butt ups".
I hunt the Mississippi river. Any ideas for jerk rigs in over your head water?
Using a heavy weight or even a concrete block on the end. You may also consider a long line rig with bungie on one end.
I bought some black 1/4 inch nylon rope to make my jerk rig. Is that too big? Will the ducks notice the line? Or should I use something thinner like paracord?
I prefer the thicker cord. That thin paracord is harder to grab and digs into my hands!

I will add that it’s good to keep that rope underwater. Use a stake or something to keep it down
We pull them in a foot or two and let slack off so it looks like the ducks swimming

That Remington 870 looks like it's been used for a long time.
I used it off and on for 30 years. I retired it 2 seasons ago.

@@nasserkuzbari2205 I only hunt with very old guns that have history and that are extremely well made and solid like Browning auto-5 , Remington 870, old double barrels that have a lot of character. Also it makes much better pictures with my black lab and the ducks/geese/cranes/snipes/grouse we catch. I will retire before they will.
And? Finally someone who is not buying a new gun every second year! I am sure that he shots better because of that, I know I do, because you have t get used to a new or newer gun and most young hunter keep changing gun thinking they will shoot better, but it is not the case, quite the opposite. Stop being brainwashed into buying the latest gun, love your gun and get used to it and the longer you will own it, the better you will shoot and the more attached to it you will become.
I love this idea, but have to reverse it. Our river bed is nothing but rocks and you're NOT going to push the pole in. I use a 3 pound anchor and push the pole in the ground right next to me on the blind on the bank. Easy to reach and works like a charm.

I’ve seen a jerk rig kit for your situation, it comes with a mesh sack you put rocks in for anchor, then toss rocks and just carry the sack. That way your not dragging around heavy weights. Should be easy enough for you to make your own.

You can find them in fishing section at academy Walmart etc. they are trot line clips. Then you attach a decoy clip to it.

Coty Thomas if I was only going to have 18 decoys, the most versatile set up would be 12 Mallards and 6 black ducks or 12 Mallards and 6 Greenwing Teal.
