  • This film shows several stages of a polio examination, focused mainly on the patient's bone and muscle condition and strength. There are multiple patients, all children, and various parts of the body being tested. Children are shown wearing braces, bandages and wraps, on gurneys, and being carried by aides. Doctors, nurses, and aides manipulate limbs and in some cases the children attempt to move their bodies without help. Several children are shown being carried to a pool, where they practice walking and moving about, sometimes with a railed apparatus placed in the water. The exam includes a respiratory test, tests of various back, leg, and arm muscles, and a presentation of types of treatment.

Poliomyelitis was actually a major concern also in Italy in the '50s. When I was a young boy in the early '70s, it had already disappeared, luckily, but I knew several people older than me who were affected by polio.

32:27 Some children and adults needed not only leg braces but also a back brace (corset) because of scoliosis or paralyzed abdominal muscles. But I think, the problem at that time was that all these braces (for the legs and the spine) were made of steel and therefore much too heavy. The modern carbon fiber ortheses used this problem.
At school as a first grader of six years I often noticed a girl (two classes above) who wore leg braces due to polio. She could only walk slowly and with strenuous efforts with crutches, but fortunately didn't need a back brace. This is more than 55 years ago but I never forgot her.

It is sad that some parents think that polio is not real. They imagine a big conspiracy.
