On the way to the UNESCO world heritage sight Kiyomizu-dera temple, Shizuka takes in the sights, sounds, and tasty bites of the area! Starting with the traditional food of the area, Shizuka tries yudofu, aka hot tofu, and compares the handmade traditional version to its modern counterpart. But it’s not just traditional treats on this journey; she also tries a rice burger, classic soda floats, and even a dessert shaped like a cloud!

Sorry! When Shizuka appears in a yukata or kimono and smiles at the viewer, even the beauty of Kyoto must take a distant second place. Food delights? Shizuka was a feast for the eyes in this presentation. I remember as a young sailor in 1973 docking in Kure harbor, where no U.S. warships had appeared for some years. The port officials met our four destroyers with leis for the officers, musicians (those taiko drummers were awesome), and Japanese girls in gorgeous kimonos dancing on the pier as we tied up. I almost cried from the beauty of it all and felt a sting of shame inside for thinking we had been enemies a few decades earlier. This now old gaijin has been to Japan seven times in all, and each time, I'm deeply moved by the beauty I see in the culture -- and especially with the women -- and which I know must forever be preserved and defended. Seeing Shizuka always brings back those heartfelt memories and feelings. Dig in, Shizuka! You are a tribute to the beauty and culture of Japan and the world.

I really enjoy watching the video with a host who appreciates good food so much! It's almost therapeutic! I've been to Kyoto before but I didn't enjoy it very much because it was too crowd. I should try to find another time to go there when it's the low season.
