I'm a High School teacher and my students walked in during my prep period watching this. They made jokes but a few wanted to watch it so we watched it as a class. By the end, they all were into it! They started looking up buckets from other brands, like harbor freight and ace hardware. They said comparing buckets should be a series you do haha
This one started on a bet in a local bar & grill and I said "challenge accepted 🤠
@@SirTools hah that's great. It's a real masterclass of how to make 15 minutes of content out of buckets
that was basically the bet, which I won it. My real aim is to kill off that "open box" videos for new products LOLOL..Scene one, "what's in the box", drama drama, let's cut the tape and open the flaps, drama drama....ha ha...
I am from MA and can confirm that Home Depot buckets are made in Leominster. The company employees about 100 people. They make some stuff for Ace and Sherwin Williams.
So, they do Ace and Sherwin W....ok..good to know this too.
Well that's 14 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Just couldn't look away . . .
14mins on a bucket… very impressive
7 mins on 2x 😃 more impressive
I have neither of these buckets, but the ones I bought as a "bucket only" purchase came from our local farm supply store. L&M Fleet & Supply. They were only $2.99 (pre-tax) but everything you could fit inside was 10% off. They are similar in design to your Lowe's bucket. They are made by Encore plastic, in the U.S.A. They have two U.S.manufacturing locati ons on them with an 800 number of the company. I want to add more to my story, but my wife wants me to stop typing.
My wife..same thing :(
I have found that when using a mixing paddle in each bucket that the HD bucket bottom is very thin and wears out very quickly and the Lowe’s bucket will shatter/ crack from the paddle hitting the sides…..so ultimately neither will last if/when using a drill type mixer (edit) so FYI for anyone mixing mortar or anything that requires a power tool/mixer, go with a paint or joint compound bucket….also noteworthy both HD and Lowe’s carry heavier duty whit 5 gallon buckets in the paint section
I"ve heard this too
Underneath the safety warnings under the word "Leaktite" are the words "MADE IN THE USA".
I used both brands for gardening for many years and can tell you the lowes ones last longer. They take way longer to get brittle in the sun. The home Depot ones go to crap after 1-2 years. Lowes ones last around 5.
HEY....good to know
70 milliliters is 2.36 ounces. Oops. 70 mil means 70/1000 inch (0.070”). Just a bit thicker than 1/16” which is .0625” or 62.5 mil. I consider 70 mil the minimum for 5 gallon pails. Some commercial pails are 90 mil. These I feel comfortable standing on. Yeah it’s funny where you find these. I have some strong green ones from many years ago that I’ve perforated to make portable emergency sump or dewatering pump vessels. From Burger King. Sliced pickles. 😊 First thing with all pails is that I disconnect one side of the bail and slide on a 5 inch-ish length of garden hose or many other options. The larger diameter saves the wear and tear on your hands and allows one to carry heavier loads farther. 1/2” split foam pipe wrap, wrapped in electrical tape works too. Those original small diameter white tubes are painful and can actually cause long lasting injuries to your tendons and joints.
SUPER thanks Peter for this update. Word is that HomeDepot is changing their supplier, but we'll have to check out that rumor.
My experience is the Home Depot bucket handles ultraviolet light outside much better than the Lowes buckets. I get 2-3 years out of the HD buckets when left outside in the weather. Barely a year out of the Lowes buckets for some reason. They crack within the first year and then are useless.
Interesting!!! I have never purchased a Lowes bucket so I don't have that experience to compare!
Yep. similar experience here in the hot AZ sun... the blue Lowes buckets seem to make it only a year or so outside before becoming brittle and cracking under the UV, while the HD buckets last outside for several years no problem, with just some of the orange color fading.
Leaktite buckets are made in Massachusetts he read that off the bottom of the HD bucket. I am pretty certain that MA. is in the USA, so Leaktite buckets are made in the USA. It also says on their website.
The Home Depot bucket has double rings close to the top. These are added to stiffen the bucket opening. The Lowes bucket uses the handle support ring bracing for the same purpose. The pigments will influence the brittleness of the container. Each bucket is injection molded from the bottom. The center sprue (filling point) is trimmed off after the bucket is made. The molds are obviously different. The buckets are made for limited use and as Dominic M pointed out do not hold up to impact blows as well as a metal bucket.
Thanks for this posting. The extra ring makes sense.
this. this is why i am on the internet
BTW plastic buckets left in the sun continuously will get brittle primarily from UV exposure. If you find a bucket outside tap the rim at the bottom (and or top) with a tool. If it cracks you just saved yourself from a potentially messy bucket failure in you own home or worse, a customer's.
Darn good advice. 🤠
For me there is a more important comparison that must be made. Years ago the only way you could get 5 gallon buckets was by using a 5 gallon container of paint or drywall mud so I so I think they saw people reusing them for various tasks so they decided to have their own buckets made and put their own names on them. I have been using buckets from Lowe's for over 5 years and what I have found is that these buckets are thinner and cheaper than a 5 gal bucket from paint or drywall mud. I have used 30 or so buckets from Lowe's to haul gravel back-and-forth to cover areas of my property and crawl space and the Lowe's buckets especially ones left outside in the elements fall apart and crack because the plastic is really cheap this does not happen with left over 5 gallon maintenance paint buckets or drywall mud buckets so that's my complaint is that they've made these buckets so cheap maybe they're fine for people who are only going to wash their car (lol), but as far as being able to haul gravel they are cheap compared to paint buckets.
The paint buckets are actually a different type of plastic used...cool uh ?
@@SirTools lol So Lowe's and Home Depot buckets are only for people to carry water and wash their cars??? Where can I get stronger buckets without buying 5 gallons of paint?
@@jimmtech DANG...that is a good question :)
@@SirTools I've learned from the comments here that if I find a sealed bucket somewhere that's probably best to leave it alone!
This. I've used all of these buckets. There is absolutely no substitute for a paint or drywall bucket.
Try asking local contractors if they have any they're going to junk. Anyone who does finishing work will probably be happy to give you a few.
Recently, I used 4 buckets (2 HD / 2 L) outside to store a pickup truck cover above the ground. They collected water from rain. When the temperatures turned below freezing, both Home Depot buckets burst but the Lowes buckets did not burst - interesting!
That is interesting mmm....thanks for this update on them.
The most important difference between the two is that the Lowes bucket has a bigger diameter bottom than the Home Depot one. Why is this a big deal, you ask? When I am painting with a roller, I do not like using a roller pan instead I prefer to roll out of a 5 gallon bucket. When I do this, I hang one of those roller screens in the bucket and put one gallon of paint at a time in it. This is less messy and I can cover quite a bit of wall space before having to replenish my supply. The problem with the Home Depot bucket is that the roller screen is forced at the bottom to be more in the middle instead of out along the side. This is because the Home Depot bucket is smaller at the bottom. The buckets sold at Walmart also suffer this same problem. The reason this is a problem is that this restriction blocks the roller from reaching the bottom of the bucket to where most of the paint is. The Lowes bucket is wide enough so that the paint roller will reach all the way to the bottom of the bucket which is obviously important as one gallon only fills it up about 3" worth. Using a Home Depot Bucket means that you can only access the top quarts worth of paint or so. As an aside the buckets sold by my local "Do It Best" hardware store are the same size as the Lowes and iare also suitable for painting as well.
Good to know !
Good to know. Never paid attention to this before. Same as you I don't like roller pans. Thanks.
@@jornhaga1652 yeah good old roller pans LOL
@@SirTools you mean paint spill makers. Yeah, I hate those things. Side note, noticing the price you paid on those buckets. It's worth the trip to get the buckets at a paint store. They are still less than those box stores and the buckets are built much better.
Thank you!! I was about to start yelling at the screen: “check the bottom!!” 😅
I found a Home Depot one is a porta potey
I have a bucket vac from Home Depot that I use all the time. The lowes bucket seems to be thinner material and buckles under the vacuum pressure of the bucket vac. The Home Depot bucket does not buckle under the same pressure
Interesting info
I could not believe my eyes when the bucket collapsed using the bucket vacuum
I like using the bucket vac to unclog ac drains and all sorts of other projects
@@THETIMINATORTHETOOLMAN You need to use two buckets, one inside the other, to prevent collapse. Oneida uses two for their Dust Deputy Deluxe dust separator.
The cabinet shop I used to work at threw away steel 5 gallon buckets every couple weeks, I use them for my dust collection on a shop vac.
There you GO ! And thanks for the comment. A lot of old places would toss "good" stuff out in my day too :)
The lids for the Home Depot ones say Made in America. I stick with the Home Depot ones because If i'm turning it over to make a bench the height matches. Thanks!
Sounds like a good project !
I use home Depot buckets outside, mostly to store charcoal and smoking pellets. I use Lowe's buckets inside, mostly to soak laundry, and similar inside jobs where I don't want to bring charcoal dust into the process. The orange versus blue allows me to keep things straight. I only came to this video to try and learn whether I can use a Lowe's lid on a home Depot bucket. Apparently, I can.
First thing I do with those buckets is cut the plastic handle off and put on the two piece ones sold by Amazon so that the handle is bigger round. I have one Home Depot that I use a Lowes lid on. I buy the thin top ones easier to remove. I have some buckets from Menards that use a screw on lid, which I keep birdseed in. Harbor Freight has their buckets which are cheap. Bad thing is most that they don't come with lid and bucket as one piece
To add to this plethora of useful information I recently discovered a Frabil minnow bucket lid fits a HD bucket but not the Lowes.
Interesting and heck, thanks for the update Bobcat.
Both buckets deteriorate and crack. Get a used lube oil bucket. They last forever. Takes some cleaning but they last forever.
Good advice
Neat Video. I use Lowes & Home Depot buckets for several things, like storing strings of Christmas lights in with paper towels in between each string, keeps them untangled and clean & dust free. I store my chains in those buckets. wash cars with those buckets and my Wife bought a toliet seat that fits the 5 gallon buckets and uses it at our Cabin. Hey, comes in very handy I'll have to admit.
WoW...cool aps for those buckets :)
Home Depot's newer buckets have the city and state where they are made stamped in the bottom. The Lowes website states the thickness is now 1.65mm thick, whereas the HD buckets is .70mm. The extra weight is in the bigger handle on the HD bucket.
Things change and good old Lowes is trying to do one better LOLOL..
I just purchased 4 Lowe's five gallon buckets. Got home and found one bucket had crack almost full length in bottom. I didn't notice it in store because i picked up two stacked at once. Not a lot of money but when i go that way tomorrow, i am going to exchange it.
They do have a good return policy. The cheapest price is at "Firehouse Subs". $3 per bucket right now and made by the same company as Home Depot.
If you see a used 5 gallon bucket on a job site with a lid on it don’t open it. Trust me.
OR near an RV LOLOL :)
You’ve worked with Sid too, ‘eh?
Stinky
We need more BUCKET stories :)
I know nothing about the Loews bucket, but when I used the Home Depot bucket with my Cyclone dust collector it collapsed even when doubled up. I has some old Costco laundry soap buckets and it stands up to the Cyclone dust collector.
Probably showing my age but many years ago I would stop by White Castle and they would give me free buckets that their pickles came in. Don’t think they do that anymore….haven’t tried lately.
The buckets are now even less lying on the roads now, maybe due to prices they are picking them up LOLOL...
I used HD and Lowe's buckets to move chemicals from AZ to GA. Any leaks would be contained and with the price of chemicals today, it was a cheap way to move those valuable items. None of the HD orange lids broke though being stacked five buckets high in the trailer. Nearly every of the Lowe's blue lids shattered en route.
WoW, now there's a good story we needed back when filming....OH, still interesting to hear this.
I found one in a bedroom that was used for a laundry basket it had socks in it and under britches I guess it's perfect when you don't have much
Thats a new one on me, but money is money
👍😀😀
Around here we have Menards for a regional big box store, Harbor Freight also. sells them.
I figured that Menards would pop up somewhere. Wonder where they get their buckets from ?
I thought I was on LSD the whole time, maybe mushrooms and some pot! I don’t know? But a bucket is a bucket. The orange one glows brighter.
I won the bet :)
I purchase my buckets base on prices. The difference is really not much..
There was another hardware store (green buckets)..one time special 99 cents..I purchased 20 ea, later I regret not getting more…
For farm use..
Tractor Supply has a better price last I checked.
A "grit guard" used for washing and detailing a car will NOT fit in a Lowe's bucket".
That's interesting.
Sir, you are the Joe Walsh of the tool/workshop world, and I am a huge fan of both!
What do you mean?
@@antpaste Both dudes are cool. Nothing more. I meant no offense.
@@semihandyman5711 none taken. I was simply confused. Have a nice day.
Its important to note that one is blue and one is orange.
ha ha ha....I do like it :)
I just bought 4 Lowes buckets to mix tile setting mortar in. Two of them have split from the mixing paddle. Buckets from sheet rock mud are definitely stronger.
I've been looking at those too. Stronger side walls. Thanks for posting.
Can’t speak about the HD bucket as I shop Lowe’s. I shop Lowe’s because Lowe’s gives me a veterans discount all year long…HD does not. So…I’ve had the bottom of the Lowe’s bucket crack and split but, I still will go Lowe’s for the veterans discount. Interesting comparison…haven’t seen that yet!!😁
Your right Keith, and Lowes has special uniforms for vets also. Fact is the company has for many years had discounts for vets. Sounds like an episode :)
I'm retired military and I receive a 10% discount from Home Depot. All I have to do is show my retired military ID
@@donaldlindsly4353 yes, retired military. I did not retire from the military however I am a veteran. Lowe’s honors that…HD does not. In addition, it depends on who checks you out and it’s hit or miss. To some at HD, my 214 suffices, but to others…they claim that the discount applies only on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. There’s no consistency at HD…Lowe’s is a better experience all around.
The HD around here gives vets discounts (pretty much just verbal ask/confirm).
We have a ton of orange HD buckets (for home improvement & yard work) but I wanted to get both sizes of the Lowe's ones to distinguish dry items for the koi pond (i.e.: blue color code to keep the clay, salt, baking soda, etc. SOMEWHAT safe from the humidity in the deep South!) but if they're gonna crack under the weather elements ;-/ (even if pseudo-indoors (cabinet inside a screened patio), it defeats the purpose! ;-/
Thank for sharing. I wish you physically test and compare the volume though.
Ran out of time to get a volume test. I can only assume the Home Depot would be more by a tiny amount.
I am in paint and drywall for a living so I don't normally buy a empty 5 from anywhere. I throw and give away so many 5's but I tend to shop more at the Depot so if I was buying a bucket they'd likely get my money, or I'd go to Sherwin Williams and talk them out of one.
Cool
Ive used the same grey paint bucket for 20 years. I replaced the plastic thing on the handle with a small piece of copper pipe, it will last longer than me.
Wow, 20 years is awesome VS these two buckets.
Floor and Decor..... If you have one out by you i like their Red Buckets best.... they don't tend to stick together, seem stronger and are only $3.49
YES....I was in a Floor and Decor near here. Didn't notice the buckets, but heck.."interesting"
It would nice to find out on which bucket fits the Gamma Seal lid . I have tried HD , Home Hardware , Canadian Tire and I could not for the life of me get it to fit . I have done some research on CZcams the Internet and it’s hilarious how people struggle to get the lid on. It would be nice if you can try it yourself.
The gamma seal lid is set up for a very different bucket. The supply chain is even a special order size and sourced on it's own size. Not fair !
Should be using food grade for gamma lids. Try a bakery for free icing buckets
I am guessing the Depot bucket is made in Loeminster (Lemon Stir) MA because Massachusetts is littered with plastic factories that pay minimum wage and it might as well be china. any way what I noticed is that my bucket head works on the Lowe's bucket but my dustoper did not work as well.
Wow ! More than I ever wanted to know about a bucket.🤔 Will buy Lowe’s only because of Made in USA
I use these buckets for a lot of things on my farm, I prefer the home depot, I find the lowes ones crack more often and I have to replace them more often. Im actually watching this today because my Lowes bucket I use to transport compost from the greenhouse broke
Sorry to hear about the poop. Got another new accessory coming in for the show soon. You might want it.
I like the home Depot bucket better room the lowes isn't as heavy duty the depot lids stay on better tighter fit
YES, my blue LOWES buckets spilt at the bottom. I continue to use them, keep them outside to hold metal scrap. the rain washes out of the crack. I prefer the home depot, orange color. easy to see.
this is the most throughout review of a bucket and I loved it
It was on a bet from a bar hehehe....
I recently purchased a bucket from Harbor Freight. Seems at least as good as any of the Lowes or HomeDepot buckets that I have. Cost about $4.
cool price update. Figures Harbor Freight would be cheaper
I checked out the Harbor Freight and almost bought it bc I was already there (same price) but when I checked the lid... the Home Depot lid is better. HD has a gasket and the way it opens and closes males it easier and leakproof.
How about the gage thickness of the sidewall of the bucket ? ?
I think we should have checked that just for more facts etc...
Confirmed bucket head will fit both 👍
If the Home Depot bucket is taller and the top rim and bottom are the same size. Do they hold the same volume?
Need to check that.
I will look for an update
How about the Harbor Freight bucket?
We need to get one and do some research
You have to review them with their respected covers, Home Depot cover is a lot easier to remove and put on
The covers are completely different
Yes, the Home Depot lid is similar to one's you get with paint buckets. The Lowes bucket isnt built as well. Nor does it secure as tightly.
I've noticed Home Depot buckets degrade within a year in UV light. I'm currently experimenting with the Lowe's bucket if it will do the same. I'll let you know the outcome in 6 months lol.
Love to hear about it. Information some times is just fun facts :()
Sad to say I needed this info😂
one more thing to cross off your "bucket list",
Al , you got it :)
For a Coffee and Tools channel I'm surprised you didn't measure the bucket thickness which IMHO is just as important as the type of plastic compound used.
The Lowes bucket is 1.65 mm thick. HD bucket is .70mm thick. Lowes more than double the thickness.
Our HD bucket says Made in USA. Perhaps they saw your video!
Gotta love that HD for Made in USA
You didn't include the Harbor Freight bucket? OMG I feel so cheated. haha just kidding
My bucket says made in Leominster Mass on the bottom.
That is the one for almost 90% of the buckets for most stores.
Leominster, MA not Lemon Mister. Last time I've checked MA is in north east region of the USA. LMFAO.
Still can't read it on the bucket :)
It is dangerous to use the Home Depot bucket in College Station. :)
Im going to use this on my kayak every video I see use the Lowe’s bucket i was going to get the Home Depot bucket because it’s Orange and the kayak is orange but the Lowe’s bucket is smaller
Do you know where I can get a better quality bucket?
I've heard Tractor Supply is cheaper, but same as Home Depot.
How on earth have I found myself here … 🤔
You were in a biker bar and made a bet 🤣🤣🤣
Which one is walrus approved ?
Tractor supply LOLOL...
The company that makes the Home Depot bucket is a US based company who claims it’s products are made in the U.S.
I would like to think so, but not having it on the bucket seems odd
Leak tight on their website does state made in America
white bucket at wallmart $3
Inquiring minds want to know. How many 9mm rounds will each absorb at 50 yards?
Enough to fill the Albert Hall?
You should really put the lids on and see which one is easier. 😂
I know the home Depot lids are a pain both putting on and taking off. Lol 😂
My lowes bucket has been good to me and is easily oldest tool lol
Check the thickness, used to be 9 mil now it only 7 mil.
I thought they were getting thinner...OK...good to know
Leaktite is in LEOMINSTER, MASS... that's good ol' US of A
Lowes buckets split where the ridges are on the bottom sides. Home Depot buckets are better in my opinion for a tool bucket.
Mine did too. Bottom leaks. Brand new bucket.
If you go eat at any place that serves pickles with their food, you can also pick up their empty buckets usually for free while you are there eating, just ask for them.
Food grade too :)
but you never get the pickle smell out.
Then I seen one use of the bathroom trash bucket
Leominister Ma .is in the USA! Surprise!
Thanks for reviewing, Sir! I like and bought many things at Home Depot; but of-course I would go with Made in U.S.A!!!
Good thoughts !
Our las vegas sun is intense here and HD buckets seems to last longer than Lowes bucket. Great review!!!
Now there's a new one, but I can believe it. 😀
No lid display
No lids :(
Lowes get brittle as they get old. Home depot buckets hold up better
Plastic quality ! Another point !
LOL HAAAA bet its pressed in the same factory
I thought that too, but after reviewing them both the answer is appears to be no.
Who knew…?
Exactly :)
I prefer the orange bucket , easier to find in my pack rat garage.
😅
My Orange Home Depot Bucket says Made in USA on the bottom🤷🏾♂️😁
im biased , like the Home Depot bucket ....
How about the Harbor Freight bucket?
