I think Penny's a tad bit dumb than Cat was supposed to be. Her character was funny mainly because she had an extremely strict mother but other than that she was more lovesick in certain scenes than full out Cat.
She wasn’t typecasted for this tho... she has always said that she wanted to play Penny- hence how this came about.

They aren't really the same at all imo. Ditzy and musical were Cats only traits while Penny was more charming, flirty, and cute than just dumb and she was lovesick but actually had a strong personality. It really doesn't fit to me how Ari plays her like an simple airhead and stupid when she wasn't. Ari sings well ofc but her character just doesn't fit.
And she's original Cat too, not season 3 or 4 Cat.
i think a reason she may have been holding back her vocals at some parts is cause penny isn’t really a vocally demanding role with a lot of belting so her belting every line would have felt weird and out of place

Ariana's character had actual skin white as snow they couldn't change the lyrics. Yes it could be a tan but you don't know if it's fake or not and ppl can get darker or lighter as they grow up if you didn't now that well now you know.
I want to see Ariana play an actual real grounded character one day. Not some super bubbly or sassy person, or just another role that showcases that she can sing. I’m kind of tired of her always playing the same type of characters.
Honestly I agree. Through out the years I've noticed how Ariana plays the same role EVER TIME and most of the time honestly she is playing herself because she has the same personality as the characters she has played which has honestly made me believe that she is a bad actor or that people are just using her because of her fame and that's not good maybe if they gave her a different role I would think differently but for now I'm just gonna stick with that, and I seriously hate to believe heat because I really like her music but she is always playing the same character and I don't know I just came to that conclusion. And there is a lot of other people that believe the same because Ariana is always playing the same character which is not the point of acting because the point of acting is to get out of your comfort zone and try new things which is not what Ariana is doing so if maybe they would give her another role I would think differently about her.

Ja'Qurria Veals And that role wasn’t hugely different from Cat. She was still playing a peppy cheerleader for a lot of the movie. It’s like every role she plays, it’s characters that constantly act super surprised, and have really airy/high-pitched voices. You know what I mean. I want to see her in a legit grounded role, where she isn’t super done up. And I’m tired of that super airy voice you can hear in all of her roles. I want to see her act normally, with a normal voice for once.

Remission* lol, it’s the forgiveness of sins, and in penny’s cases, according to her mom, is the lack thereof... cause her mom is super religious so to live without remission is to live without the forgiveness of her sins which would be the dancing and the singing, the skipping class, etc.

@@nicoleabrenica nah I’m pretty sure it is ‘permission’... the stage version definitely says “for going to jail without permission” so either way the joke is that her mother is so strict that she requires permission for literally everything (including being arrested)
In the stage version, all the women get arrested. In the movie some of them get arrested but Tracy flees and Penny hides her in her basement so her punishment is “for harboring a fugitive without her permission.” In this version, only Tracy gets arrested (which is stupid in and of itself) so they had to come up with something.

I think Ariana is a singing powerhouse. Her version of Penny is very much tied to her pop star persona and I think it was apart of her direction to give Penny some Cat/Ariana Grande vibes. For the younger viewers.
So I’m not hating on this Penny- I get what the director was trying to convey. People just love to come after her because it’s fun to call out a performer like her.
Honestly, I think they not only wanted to include Ariana because of her musical theater history and talent, but for greater outreach for the performance entirely.
I think it's also good that Ariana wasn't showcasing her fullest vocals because if she had it would've sounded too forced as if she were trying to outsing others.
I don’t think people “love” to come for her, since it’s very valid criticism, and not everyone likes her breathy vocal technique where she slurs her words, especially in musical theatre.
I don’t think that at all to be honest. She didn’t really start to convey Cat vibes until half way through the show. She’s a singing powerhouse for sure, but her vocals were lacking very much for this role. She replaced a lot of broadway technique and singing styles with her pop singing styles. Also her character choices were not very good.

I love Ariana as an artist, but she really didn’t show her skill in this musical. I never once said I thought she was talentless and awful. I just left what I thought. Ariana has great comedic timing but Amanda Bynes is my all time favorite Penny😃 I hate that Hollywood messed her up so bad.
Mine too, Amanda’s brilliant delivery of her lines made her small role in the film one of the biggest standouts for me. I hope she makes a comeback, she really deserves it!

@@Sarahw__ Also the fact her tan kinda ruined the whole point of Penny and Seaweed . Since it was "wrong for them to be together" at that time because Penny is white and was usually paler. But Ariana's tan makes her look darker and less white(not like another race but not as white as other pennys were to help get the point across). So it kinda just throws off the point to me because if they both have darker skin then people wouldn't of had a problem with it back then. I have heard other people say this too so it's not just me who thinks this lol.

she’s so breathy which is bizarre since she’s trained in musical theatre
I am guessing it is the result of a couple factors. Firstly, she retrained her voice to fit the more pop sound and hadn't done MT for years before this program, so it may have been difficult to maintain a technique she was no longer used to using. Secondly, when programs like this cast big names like Ariana Grande, generally they are attempting to draw in audiences that do not typically watch musical theater, so it is possible the producers wanted her to use the tone and style that she is known for so it would appeal to her non-theatery fanbase.

Everyone is saying she was good in the beginning then got very similar to cat, midway through, but I think the lines she had were already similar to cat, therefore making her tap into her role as cat. I mean it was scripted so it's not really her fault. I enjoyed it, yes it's not her best work, but she still portrayed the character well, and the reason she wasn't singing super amazingly was because she didn't wanna take away from everyone else, if she had sung her very best she would have stolen the show. And cut her a little slack, she hadn't done a broad way musical since 13, and everyone is saying she used more of a pop style then broad way, but the directors are the ones who cast her and watched her practice that way, so they would have told her to change it if they didn't want her to do that.

Oh this was amazing, I remember watching this
I remember in year 9 i was in my school's hairspray, just a backup dancer but it was really fun i loved the music and the costumes and the theatre kids in my school are so much fun to hang out with id love to do it again but due to covid our school plays were cancelled this year, didnt even get to auditions hopefully next year will be better because id love to do it again i remember the first few weeks of reherseals we sat in the music classroom with snacks and drinks watching the movie id love to do it again
If you guys didn’t know, Ariana did stage musicals before she got into the pop singer stage of her career❤️
tbh i think the directors told her to use her "pop star voice" bc of how much attention / the expectation seeing "ariana grande in hairspray live" would bring in... cause she can totally do musical theatre, if you look up suddenly seymour with seth macfarlane (which was filmed in the same year i think!) it shows off her beautiful musical theatre voice !!
