Saw TOP live 3 times in Chicago during Tom's turn as the lead singer. Smooth and classy. I played it soo much in the car when my daughter was 3 years old. Today shes 28 years old, and knows every word. We'll always have our memories of riding and singing TOP together!
I've been following t o p since 1972 when the original lineup was intact, after 74 it became a revolving door of a band. Finally crashing by 81. Twice they were coming to Cincinnati opening for Santana. Twice they didn't show so I let em go. In 93 I bought the monster on a leash cd and was blown away. That Oct I saw them in Cincinnati at bogarts with this exact lineup and they were fantastic the new young players and new sound they had fit perfectly with the 90's. This is my favorite lineup of all time. I took my 10 yr old to the show. He had a broken arm Emilio took him to the dressing room and had everyone sign his cast. And autograph his c d. And his 8 x 10 glosses of the band. They were all God given sweethearts. I'm a fan for life. Thanks Bill Feilhauer 👍
God I love this band. The brass that kicks ass! TOP, EWF. These bands brought back the big band sound and they never got their due credit for that. Props TOP. What an era. Thanks for the memories.
It just doesn't get any better than this. Tom Bowes lead vocals, Steve Grove sax solo, with the remarkable trumpet work by Greg Adams and Lee Thornburg. Doc Kupka's baritone sax is wonderful as always. Can't get enough of this from the album 'Monster On A Leash" from 1991. Steve Grove, sax, left the group and is now known as Euge Groove with his own hits, like "Romeo and Juliet." Everyone is outstanding.
Tower Of Power: Quite possibly THE best funk group in this universe, and others. I have seen them dozens of times across decades, own every CD and it is the group that just continues to get better. I sure miss Larry Braggs too though.

TOP with Tom Bowes played Toads Place 3 years in a row. A friend saw them the first year and told me you have to see them. I went the second year and was beyond amazed at what I witnessed. It was the greatest "club" show I ever saw ! Yea Sinatra, Darin ect.. But this soul rockin beyond tight - perfection !!! OMG ! Just unreal musicianship. The third year Tom's voice was shot... I'm sorry to write it but it was gone like a beautiful day.

As a trumpet player, in my opinion… the most technically demanding album they’ve ever done. Lee could scream on trumpet, and Greg Adams (arranger) sure knew so. This one is no exception… wow
I saw TOP perform this live in 1990 at Flushing Meadows. And I remember the tenor player’s blonde hair blowing back in the wind when he took the lead on this song. He couldn’t have asked for a more epic setting for his solo 😂
Monster on a Leash is always in my CD rotation! That Steve Grove(aka Euge Groove)was a great addition to the Great and Powerful TOP horns! Incredible Sax man!
This reminds me of the times they used to perform at the Monterey Fairgrounds in the 90's. When TOP stopped performing there, I stopped going as well...

That horn break at around 2:15 is the bomb. When nobody else is home, I blast that section just to see if Lee can break the windows with that last note .😁🎺
Well, I'm going to spring a little bit of honesty here. I always loved this song from the first moment I heard it, and I love it just as much today as I loved it the first time I heard it. The horns pulled me right in; the background harmony is impeccable. When I heard the lead vocals, I was somewhat disappointed. I was like, "What happened?" I was used to the power singing for their lead vocals. I bought the album - still have it - still played the song repeatedly-- this style of lead vocals grew on me because the song had so many other parts I liked. However, I disagree with the person who said no one can sing this song better than TB. Someone probably can. TB probably even knows someone can sing it better than he can. The only thing is that in the 2000's, I've not heard the song in the TOP line-up for their shows.
Probablty because of that lead trumpet lick in the middle of the song that Thornburg just crushes. You do this song live, that has got to be there....... Just my thoughts. Great tune.

Absolutely love the this tune and CD..There isn't a bad song on Monster on a Leash..that record really put the TOP back on track after a few years of uncertainty..the 80's were tough for them without a real (good) record deal and their previous record to this, Power kinda fell flat..(although Credit was on it)..I saw this lineup first in '89 and then a bunch a more times throughout the early/mid 90's..TOP (the CD) from '93 with Lenny Picket guesting is a high point for this particular lineup..Tom is at his best on Come to a Decision and Rocco just kills on the Educated bump..miss these guys..
