This little Lady is indeed a Gem! I hate to say this, but this kind of humility and dedication to their professions is rarely if ever present amongst young people in this country today. It's all about "Me" , social status and the mighty dollar. Japanese workers from the dock gang to the most humble trades practiced a professionalism and a commitment that really impressed me when I used to go to Japanese cities as a merchant seaman onboard Matson, APL and Sealand ships in the 80's and 90's. The Japanese people mostly take pride in whatever they do, and they are some of the best tradesmen and women Worldwide. As a people we not only validate ourselves, but our culture and our way of life. Think about that.

I am surprised there's no disc brakes so she don't have to struggle to stop. Also, I am sure they can easily install an electric motor, battery, solar panels and design so everything blends in and still maintain the traditional look.

My friend, I thought about the same thing before. It's not just about outside traditional look but also the spirit of traditions. If you breakdown the meaning of Jinriksha (Rickshaw), it's all about human powered vehicle.
In Kyoto, there are many rickshaws equipped with brakes because there are many up/downhill slops. Brakes helps and ensure safety to customers, shafu and the public. Other than that, everything remains traditional and just human power to run the vehicle.

if talking about batteries and motor, there should be at least +1 wheel, steering, and brakes. And it would be another type of vehicle)))))))))))))
