    The first time I made a Swede say "oj" was a special moment...kind of. It felt like I unlocked an achievement, even though it was because I stepped backwards off a bus into a woman.

    "oj då" sounds exactly like the Austrian word for dude "oida" 😂😂
    Swedish is so fun, because many words sound so Austrian sometimes 😍

    In Polish we have a 1:1 counterpart to "oj". It's "oj", "ojoj", "ojojoj" or "ojej" :D

    In Belgium, we say "oei" (pronounced almost the same) for "whoops" or "ouch" or have a negative surprise!

    This feels so comfortable to me. It's like the "oy" from "Oy vey" or longer "oy vey iz mir" I've heard and used mitt hela livet 😁 Walt, that's from Yiddish, which itself is from German I think... I wonder if there's any relation? I DO hear this all the time, and didn't realize it had a meaning. Vad kul ord att veta. Om jag kan åka till Sverige, jag kommer att prata som en native 😄✌️

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  Před 4 lety

      "Oy" is more like "oh" if I'm not mistaken, not exactly like the Swedish one but sure, kind of similar!

    • @erexford
      @erexford Před 4 lety +1

      It sounded like the Yiddish “oy vey” to me, also. It’s often used in the U.S. by many. But TIL the Swedish “oj” is so much more! Love this fun video!

    Also a swede here. Actually don't have anything to add, except for that you can also use "oj" in a joking way too. Maybe you covered that and I missed it?
    Ex. If a kid tumble and it's not serious and they're kind of not reacting, just looking surprised at you, I say "Oj, vad hittade du där?" (oops, what did you find there?) in a joking/emphatic tone while smiling a little and usually get a laugh back (unless they're actually hurting) and they just continue what they where doing before the tumble.
    Have you covered "Nämen"? I sometimes also use that instead of "oj" in this sort of situation.

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  Před 4 lety +2

      I guess it falls under "surprise" and I'll definitely cover "nämen" next! :D

  • @erexford

    In English, we also say, "Oh! You don't say!" as an expression of surprise, which sounds almost like what you said at the beginning of the video.

    • @nievesvarela8308
      @nievesvarela8308 Před 4 lety +1

      Somewhat similar. It depends on the variant of spanish I guess. In case of surprise I'd use "ah" like in english, in pain or compassion I'd use "ay". I've only heard "ayayay" in scenarios of trouble. For instance: "Ayayay, what are we gonna do with this body?" If you say "ayayay, congratulations!" you'd sound like a cartoon in my opinion :)
