  • Part One of my Autistic Hyposensitivity series.
Auditory Hyposensitivity is under-responsivity to sound.
This is how it presents for me and examples of my experiences.

i definitely have delayed response when people are talking to me or showing me something- sometimes i will pause for a minute or two before i understand what i’m hearing/looking at. if my boyfriend tells me a joke, he knows that sometimes he has to wait 30 seconds for me to hear it and laugh. on the other hand loud wailing noises like ambulances will literally cause me physical pain and make me cry. i also hate the sound of announcements over a loud speaker, like at a train platform or in a store. it seems i’m hyposensitive when i’m well rested and i become more hypersensitive as various stimulation throughout the day impacts me. i wonder if anybody else can relate?

i relate to this so much. if i am super focused on something, i won't hear anything. then when i read i haveee to focus hard bc it takes me longer to process what I'm reading. so if someone is trying to talk to me while I'm reading, I get very overwhelmed. I always use subtitles bc I hear words wrong, or i have delayed comprehension.

i also give delayed responses to noises 😭 or like if somebody shows me a meme or funny tweet on their phone i’ll be staring at it for a long time before i process what i’m looking at and laugh. thanks for the video!!

I flip between hypo and hyper depending on what the sound is. I also have CAPD thrown in the mix, so it's difficult to explain to other people. I'm also a school music teacher, so it's quite the minefield!

I definitely need subtitles and captions! Finally I can explain the feeling.
I don't watch much subtitled anime because I need both the voice and subtitles to match 😅

Thank you so much for this. :)
I can relate to what you say a lot. I also hear more noises when I am stressed but usually I blend them out.

interesting. The clinician who diagnosed me hypothesized that I had hyposensitivity when it came to eating and ingesting food. I have a history of stuffing myself and binge eating. Also, my wife has told me for years that it looks like I often don't feel my lips in different context such as when something (eg. a piece of food) is on my lip or when I kiss her. For my part, I really do feel like my lips are a bit numb. Quite interesting...looking forward to the other vids on the topic. By the way, in your thumbnail you look like Taylor Swift with dark hair...I can't be the only one who'll notice that.

I'm not officially diagnosed but yeah. I watched a lot of videos that were made by autistic people talking about their experiences and I felt like I probably don't have autism because I don't relate to the sensory stuff. I relate to the social stuff 100% though.
Then I remembered today that hyposensitivity exists too and I thought I have to look into that so yeah I related to the vast majority of stuff. Like I love hurting myself it gives me so much calmness. I don't actually hurt myself that I have to see a doctor but just stuff that is painful to me. And I always felt so ashamed of it. I kinda feel seen now and yeah I'm sorry for the dump I only wanted to say that I love biting my lip.

It's just as you said. The most of the time I feel like I'm not having enough, like I need something that makes me feel anything or interested in something... so my parents never thought i was autistic. Even my therapists at the beginning thought it was depression because autism is more often related with hypersensitivity 😢

Super interesting, thank you. Everything like this I hear about autism makes me more sure I have it

Wow I related to this so much. My pre school teacher thought I was deaf cause if I was hyper focusing- I would not respond to my name at all. So I got tested for deafness!

Thank you for sharing! I feel like this describes what Julianna deals with although I don't know that she would be able to articulate it.

Hi ! Stupid question but do you think it's possible to be "selectively" hypo and hypersensitive, or just both... I really relate to everything you say but also have that thing of often hearing sounds no one else can hear

Hello, I've noticed that my sensitivity and how I react to sounds depend on my level of tiredness. But sounds stays the biggest trigger for me. I like listen to music but not loud otherwise it becomes an amount of chaotic sounds.

Wait. Since when is Indonesian spelled in the Latin alphabet with a blend of Tagalog, English and French?
