For me, the difference is really about the contract for the institution. If you are focusing on part-time courses, often people will call them lecturers.
However, if you are focused on a full-time position at a university, most often it will be called a professor, if they are tenure track. This means that you are on your way to represent the university as one of other professors.
Professors generally have a PhD at most universities, and they do a combination of research, teaching, and service.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

As a first-gen student and someone who is currently determining which path to follow for my academic future, this was extremely insightful and helpful! I especially appreciate how you emphasize that one position is not better than the other; rather, they have different responsibilities and priorities. I have been feeling an immense amount of pressure to go the professor route because of that stigma that the title "lecturer" holds, but after hearing that reassurance in your video, I definitely think lecturer is a better fit for me. Thank you so much for your work!

Might be difficult to distinguish one from the other. Because different countries have different ranking systems for the same titles.
