Bringing a 1950 John Deere Model M tractor back from the Dead!

- We breath some life back into an old dead tractor.
New ignition points, new alternator belt, cheap re-purposed shower seat, carburetor clean, replace sight glass, new battery.

I have a 1951 John Deere M that it completely original. It runs well. I am hoping some day to restore it.
I’ve got 20 tractors lawnmowers and farm tractors and every single one is point’s ignition and my pickup truck is point’s ignition
And I’m only 20
Thank you, I have a 1957 420 model that was given to me by a dear friend. He bought it in 1963 and took excellent care of it. He was just shy of 102 when he passed away.

It is truly amazing that after 67 years this thing was able to run again with some minor repairs.
I am incredibly fortunate to have my Dad still around and he really enjoys doing this kind of stuff!

I am very blessed to still have my father around. I have come very close to losing him twice.

The starter and alternator, and coil are Ford.
Love them old farm tractors. I know where 2 Farm Alls from the late 40's to early 50's are when I get to that point.
There is just something very cool about that old vintage iron!
To check full output of the alternator jump the field and battery terminal and the charging system should put out maximum voltage. This bypasses the regulator. If it reads 15 volts, the alternator is good. If it doesn't increase, the alternator is bad. With the alternator hooked up normal, Rev the engine to 2000 r.p.m's and it should read 14.5 volts which is regulated voltage. Bypassing the alternator is called 'Full field test'. The brushes can be replaced by separating the halves and removing the brush holder and brushes. Use a hair Bobby pin to hold the brushes up while installing the halves. Mark the 2 halves position with a screwdriver.
Hell yeah Hutcherson starter I've used them several times and always if it's something odd ball I love old tractors I got me a 54 Ferguson I hope the old girl don't blow away in the storm you might be able to get your points and condenser at Tractor Supply they have them for my old Massey
love the 2 cylinder John Deere...she'll be grunting when you go to bushhogging!

I had a 48 M John Deere tractor 4 ft bush hog I bought a new one and it would it bush hog really good I plowed little gardens with it and I had a little smart Sawmill and I bought and I run it with that tractor with the pulley on it we would cut up board boards for the barn

I can buy them a nice toilet seat. I redid my 49 a few years ago the whole seat was about $60. The decals i used were alot, and they were just vinyl. Yuk

ctors I had a 8n ford that I bought in high school as my ag project and rebuilt it as well as the generator but, that was a pain so I kept the generator and put an alternator on it. I put a one wire alternator on it so I had to energize it every once in a while but I loved that tractor and have always wanted to build another one ! good seat for the tractor !

My neighbor had an 8N for a while, he let me borrow it and it was great. He sold it years ago when I had no cash and some lucky other guy got it.
Need to fix the air cleaner it's bottom is gone where you our the oil in it

That's not a Bush hog. It is a rotary mower. A Bush hog has dual wheels and is pulled. A rotary mower attaches to the hydralic arms and can be lifted, like any other implement. Some folks call rotary ,owners bush hog but they are not the same, e7ven though they are both driven off the PTO.

A brush hog or "bush hog" is a type of rotary mower. Typically these mowers attach to the back of a farm tractor using the three-point hitch and are driven via the Power take-off (PTO). It has blades that are not rigidly attached to the drive like a lawnmower blade, but are on hinges so if the blade hits a rock or stump, it bounces backward and inward, and then centrifugal force makes it go outwards again.
