He would keep sentinel busy while bumblebee would take the rust cannon (if he can pick it up) and give it to optimus when he returns to store it in his trailer for safe keeping.

the way how his mask did not take damage is like how sloped armored tanks encounters anti tank shells during world war 2 where the shell will either ricochet out of the armor but damaging it a little in the process
