    S5E1: starts with Rimmer mocking the end of the sappy romance film, ends up making the same decision himself.
    S5E2: starts with Lister similarly mocking the Trojan Horse gambit, ends up saving the day with a trojan horse.
    Yeah, Series/Season 5 really cleverly written

    This episode has one of my favourite lines in all of Red Dwarf. I love when Kryten and Lister are sitting there hiding from the Inquisitor, having been erased from history, and after the Inquisitor killed Cat and Rimmer. Kryten turns to Lister and say “All in all, today’s been a bit of a bummer, hasn’t it sir?”
    I just love how understated it is.

    The Inquisitor reminded me of Wowbagger the Infintely Prolonged from Douglas Adams' "Life, the Universe, and Everything". Wowbagger was afflicted with immortality, and it made him so bitter that he traveled back & forth through time to personally insult every sentient being in the universe -- in alphabetical order.

    The novel makes it explicitly clear, the RD universe does not have any aliens. Humans are alone. BUT!!! Turns out you can actually do everything Trek does with androids, holograms, GELFs, time travelers, etc, etc. You hardly notice the difference.

  • @demonsorrows

    Neat fact: they originally had Lister making an argument, but they realized his character is more of an anti-authority character and wouldn't just give in and play the Inquisitor's high and mighty game. So they changed the script to the short scene we see telling him to spin on it.
    Always good when actors know/care about their character enough to speak up when something doesn't fit or could be changed to suit them better.

    This is such a solid season, Holoship was great for exploring Rimmer's character in ways that weren't about how much Rimmer sucks and gives him a fleeting moment of genuine happiness, this episode is not only funny but it also gets into some deep philosophical ideas about how do you judge and measure the worth of a life, (plus there's a great dramatic irony in Lister and Kryten devising a Trojan Horse to defeat the Inquisitor after Lister decried the tactic at the start) whilst showing that Lister has a lot of untapped potential and is smarter than he acts most of the time, and there's an upcoming episode that is considered by many fans to be the greatest episode of all time!

  • @phillipcarlroberts4640
    @phillipcarlroberts4640 Před 7 měsíci +4

    The concept of this episode is so damn good, it basically makes the viewer question their own lives too, after you see that your judge is yourself you should see that there is a moral, neither Lister or Kryten cared about themselves enough, it is a massive insight into Listers character because he actually did care about both Cat and Rimmer.

  • @twofacetoo75
    @twofacetoo75 Před 7 měsíci +8

    I always loved this concept. It applies to all the characters but Rimmer is the easiest example, in that we are our own worst enemy. Rimmer constantly sabotages himself at every chance he has, and fails at everything due to his own hubris. Even when he met Ace Rimmer, who only wanted to be his friend and tried to big him up like he did with everyone else, our Rimmer just couldn't accept it.
    That's why I love this episode, because it's a problem everyone, in the show and in reality, has to deal with. We are our own worst enemies, we are the source for most of our problems and downfalls. And truly, if we were judging ourselves, we would probably find ourselves unworthy. Note how Rimmer's 'judge' self ignores everything he says, until Rimmer finally breaks and starts being brutally honest. And even then, he only gets off because, as said, his standards were low enough that he scraped by.

    *This* was the first episode. Notice that Rimmer's outfit starts off green, but after Lister and Kryten are deleted from history, it's red? And it's *that* version of Rimmer (and the Cat) that come back when the Inquisitor destroys itself. They have to get used to a fresh version of Lister and Kryten, except they probably behave exactly the same as the original pair, so, is it really that different? Come to think of it, how many Listers and Krytens would the Inquisitor have had to go through before either of them proved worthy?
    There was, of course, one teeny tiny flaw in the Inquisitor's plan. It should not judge anyone until they reach the *end* of their life, otherwise they may still have been able to contribute something to the universe, in the future that it is robbing them of. That said, it would have been an interesting setup for an upcoming episode in which the crew *are* about to die... but at this point, episodes were pretty much self-contained.

    "By their own low standards they acquitted themselves."
    Says alot about certain types of people.
    Also Lister didn't change - speaks to nature Vs nurture - he still had those same experiences that ultimately him who he is.
    All the Inquisitors work doesn't take those experiences away, he doesn't change the parents or environment in which they grow up & learn - so how different are those new "sperms in law" really?
    You could argue that all the Inquisitor is likely to achieve is a lowering of standards in how people judge what type of activities are worthwhile - those looking to make the world better for others are more likely to feel they could have done more.
    While the self absorbed make excuses for their actions and believe their selfishness is an asset - looking after number one is judged as worthwhile because they never strive for anything else, and blame others for their own failures, for holding them back.
    It's got some interesting idea's.

    FYI the actress who played Nirvanah Crane in "Holoship" is Jane Horrocks, a well known actress in the UK and a proud "northener" (from the north of England), as for her "transatlantic" accent, its so far from her real adorable one, that can be appreciated in this youtube vid linked, so her accent in holoship hid her real one really well, czcams.com/video/Ddkde6C5tO4/video.html

    Series 5 is very heavy on the complexities of its sci fi ideas, so much so that in some cases the comedy is more lacking in certain areas, still great and very well written of course, but its where the show tips the balance somewhat. So much so that Rob and Doug had to direct a couple of episodes and reshoot scenes because new director Juliet May found the in depth sci fi ideas too much to wrap her head around.

  • @spanners7343

    This episode clearly shows humanoids are the worst judges of themself . I love all the episodes in series 5, there are some real fun ones coming. BTW I spotted 1 continuity screw-up - if everything the Inquisitor did was erased then how does Lister still have the spare hand at the end?

    • @tbone35453

      Another minor thing I noticed was with the scene at the beginning with 'Thomas Ullman' and the Inquisitor. Poor Thomas doesn't even get a chance to be judged by himself, he just gets zapped!

    • @beauxguss6321
      @beauxguss6321 Před 7 měsíci

      Thomas is an incidental character. For purposes of the story, you have to assume that his trial and judgement took place, we just didn't see it.

    • @tbone35453
      @tbone35453 Před 7 měsíci

      When Thomas says "Is that you mother?" it suggests that he doesn't know who the inquisitor is and is seeing him for the first time. I agree that it's just for comedic and storytelling effect, just something I noticed. @@beauxguss6321

    Series 5 sees the show take a darker, harder edged turn. It’s very good, if not quite as strong for me as 3 and 4, but it was the start of a process that in my view eventually saw the show start to take itself too seriously.

    Interesting thing. The real reason Rimmer & Cat were spared was not because they had lead better lives but because Lister & Kryten actually spoke back and with more the latter challenged his views. Guy is an absolute bloody hypocrite but then, what do you expect from a guy who has been judge jury and executioner for aeons.
