  • As album sales have seen sharp declines each year, the r&b genre has been hit especially hard. It's no surprise that many r&b artists have spent the majority of their time touring and only releasing a new album every few years. Joe is an artist that has continued to consistently release albums, but it seems that even he is now considering slowing down. The legendary singer is set to release his twelfth album "#MyNameIsJoeThomas" this month, and is hinting this could be his final one. He's already off to a great start with the release of this album though, with the lead single "So I Can Have You Back" already reaching top 5 at radio. The album pays tribute to Joe's most successful album "My Name is Joe" and it's poised to give us more of the traditional love songs we've grown accustomed to receiving from this timeless artist. YouKnowIGotSoul sat down with Joe once again for an interview and discussed the creation of the new album, if he's really retiring, the vulnerability in his music, making r&b in the 90's, and much more.

Joe is gonna rock it out like Charlie Wilson. He'll be in his 60's performing at the biggest award shows like The Grammy's, The Soul Train Awards, & The BET music awards, if there is such a thing; but, what I'm trying to say is this man is classic SANGER, because he possess what we lost in some of the iconic entertainers like: Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley. This man personifies the "IT" factor. Man, the demand & the money is going to be way to high for this man to retire. He's just reached that executive status, & is wondering what next? Well, as always, his heart will guide him & love will find a way. Much love, joy & peace to this man & his 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. . . chapters of success. We love you bruh!

Joe is that artist that people won't really appreciate until he passes. He's been too underrated throughout his career. Dude can play multiple instruments & has great vocal range. Joe is my 3rd favorite R&B singer of all time, after R. Kelly & Musiq. I appreciate y'all interviewing this legend. He still gives me hope that you can treat a woman right in this day and age without having to resort to being an asshole.
Watching this interview really made me feel somewhat sad. It's like when Kobe retired from the NBA earlier this year. The way it's looking for R&B and based on previous album sales, I think this will really be Joe's last album. To start with, Joe's never sold super high numbers, like R. Kelly or Beyonce. So many big name artists have dropped albums this year, from Tank to Musiq to Maxwell, etc. & none of them had any chart topping album numbers. Frank Ocean & Beyonce did well, but the most purist of R&B fans (LaChelleWallace lol) won't consider them as "Real R&B."
What Joe is mentioning with the industry & album sales is what Tank was talking about when his "Stronger" album under performed. But I think it comes down to the fans & the demographic of the fans. There aren't nearly as many Joe fans my age (23) as there are Bryson Tiller fans, for example. That definitely plays a factor is sales performance & success.
But man, what a run Joe's had. A solid discography that stands the test of time (Better Days is my favorite). Many memorable singles & album cuts. Joe never switched up and "sold out," like doing TrapRnB or EDM Pop music. He's always done that classic R&B we love.
As far as album cuts: 'Alone,' 'Lover's Prayer' & 'Ghetto Child' were all amazing cuts from the Better Days album that could've been great singles. 'How Soon' from "All That I Am" was a great album cut also.

I don't think there is anybody who likes or loves R&B music that can honestly say they don't like this man's music. Joe's vocals are off the chain & most of his songs are serious chart toppers. This dude is so musically gifted & talented. Man, just keep on doing you! The JOE THOMAS library, anthology or what ever you want to call it is a serious body of work to be reckoned with. I heard a set where he had his sister come up & sing with him, & I was so impressed. I would definitely love to hear a collaboration with Sade & others. Much love, joy & peace to Joe Thomas.

What would the game be without Joe, R Kelly, Donell Jones, Eric Benet, Maxwell, etc. if these brothas retire because we don't support them we are in trouble. I love a lot of current artist from Miguel to Mayer Hawthorne, The Internet, etc but we need to keep these legends around. Frankie Beverly have NEVER stopped touring and have a better show than 95% of all acts out there but they don't make new music. I would hate to lose these legends due to lack of support from us. I've been along side Joe SINCE DAY 1 but to hear that he may be walking away is quite hurtful however, I respect that he gotta do what's best for HIM. He knows the ins & outs, the behind the scenes, the challenges, the everything and not to mention how Kedar helped f*ck him over. Joe seemed to be very warm, loving, very hardworking, dedicated and driven. He's too intelligent for all the bullsh*t out there including that rap/ hip hop sh*t added to his music that's not even necessary. I dislike the albums/ songs that he DIDN'T write. Po' thang. I understand and accept if you decide to quit, Joe. _It's hard out here for an r&b purist slash loyalist._ I couldn't fathom putting my heart and soul into something, independently and not see a return. I know the days of selling 10 millions albums and being number 1 are over, but DAMN! When a business isn't making a profit, they quit. It's common sense. This is why I don't like the independent route. Look around, every r&b artist that releases an album goes uncharted which ultimately leads to underperformed. You spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an album only to get a skimpy return. And, before you can turn around, the album's already posted up here on CZcams. F*CK THAT! (R. Kelly voice) How are you supposed to get paid? Anyway, you have roughly 180k fans on social media, Joe. 50k fans should buy the album. Makes sense, right? It legit feels like r&b is doomed. How many more times is this gon happen to artists? You put an album out and nobody ends up buying it, much less even knows that it exists. Maybe try the acting thing if push comes to shove. Finally, good luck with everything, Joe. I wanna see you win no matter what.

i think chris brown should really reinvent himself and take after legends like JOE who have records and records of hits after hits, this guy stays at the top of his game as he should. he has been doing it for such a long time and because of the things that chris brown has done in the past, it seems to have diminished his career a bit. he still has the hits, but with his past, it downgrades him a bit to where he could have become ala almost like Joe and all the other 90's r&b greats.

I do think that given he's old skool R&B, and need to rely on concerts and cd sales to make money, He needs to step his game up doing concerts (like charlie wilson, frankie beverlie & Maze who were able to stay in the game and was in demand due to putting on magical memorable shows). I think Joe and Keith sweat do " lazy" concerts that are not memorable magical performances that make people want more and run to see them in concert. Keith stays drunk and my baby Joe just sings with no excitement in concert. I've seen him 3 times in concert. It was the same. But I love joe and I rarely miss a day of listening to his beautiful 🎵 music

With all due respect I disagree! I’ve seen and met this man and I always feel when I watch him that he loves and enjoys what he’s doing! I’ve seen him perform 6 times and every time I feel his enthusiasm. I don’t feel he needs to change. If anything we got to remember times are different, very different. A lot of these younger folks don’t care about lyrics or a message in music, they just want beats. Joe is for a more mature audience.

@@kellyd7415 I agree. I believe he enjoys what he's doing. Joe once talked about his shyness in an interview and I think it's that shyness that affects his performances. But I am sensitive about my Joe. He is my favorite and is the only musical artist who has the most songs that I like, not even Michael Jackson. But Jackson was the best entertainer in the world concert wise. You can be a good artist but not put on the best memorable shows. Joe is like that IMO. He says he's shy and doesn't like the limelight so it would be natural that he wouldn't be crazy about doing concerts. He's a true artist who respects his craft.

As a fan of R&B, I am not ready to use the term, passing or death, to any of our remaining R&B singers careers. It's just a no no 4 me.
