    One 'trick' I've found that works really well to help support Peonies is to plant Bearded Iris around them. The strong, bold, strappy foliage of the Iris believe it or not really helps to prevent peonies from flopping and disguises the browning foliage of the Peony once it's done flowering. It works great and Iris and Peony bloom together so it looks really lovely...Just a beautiful combination 😊 Thank you Mathew!! Great video!!!! ❤

    Hi Mathew,
    If you are careful, you can dig wide so as not to disturb the peonies' roots, and plant elsewhere, and they should flower this spring.
    Also, there is a half a hoop (green coloured) plant stake that takes minimal effort to place.
    They are a stand-out flower and very costly. There are 3 types, and they all have different requirements. They also look lovely with roses.
    Maybe you might change your mind once you see them flower?
    Can you tell I'm a fan, much?
    Kind regards, Jo😊
    Love lilacs....so pleased you have a gorgeous specimen with lovely coloured, scented flowers.
    Some weeping trees would add great sculptural interest. I think Jim Putnam has a weeping pink flowering small tree, possibly a red bud?.....with chartreuse leaves.

      I had peonies at the last garden. They're pretty when they bloom, but I don't think I'll ever be a fan of them as permanent additions to any landscape given the short timeline of interest they provide.

    Hi, once again I enjoyed walking round your garden with you. The people who first lived in the house we are currently in seemed to like adding concrete. Apart from a few raised beds the whole garden was covered in weed fabric and on top of the were stones, pebbles and rocks. All of which I have had to move by hand. Hence I can understand some of your frustration. However, you are achieving such a lot. 😊

    I need your patience. I constantly fret over newly planted trees and shrubs. I'm adopting your attitude of "it will be beautiful next year." I am also tempted to buy the largest plants I can find, but I always think of your first garden and how tiny some of your plants started. And the following year, they were just thriving. I have trouble planting things with the required spacing because all I can think of is the weeds coming up between everything. How did you address this in the last garden? I don't remember seeing weeds there.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Planting small plants is really helpful for the budget! I still do it for items I can't find locally. Lots of mulch is the key to weed prevention, but I've found it can take a couple of years of consistent application to see results. I'm a bit concerned with my spaces this year because there was a serious lack of regular mulching in all spaces. So it may be a battle with weeds this year.

      I didn't bring many plants from the other home. There were a few perennials and that's it. They're fine. I don't recall digging any shrubs. Give the plants you're digging a big enough pot and plenty of water until they get back in the ground.

      I know. Some varieties just don't perform well here though. You can see how much branching dies on them from year to year - and some of them very large branches. By the end of the season, they generally look pretty rough. I'm always a fan of not perpetuating something that requires extra treatment to perform well in favor of other species and cultivars that will not require as much care/treatments.

    Your grass is in desperate need of some nitrogen.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I'm trying to determine where you think there is a nitrogen issue. All of the grass is still waking up from winter. If you're referring to the area in front of the barn specifically where it is yellowish, that's not a nitrogen issue. Most of that isn't grass at all, but weeds. The entire area is covered with gravel from the driveway and was left to grow over by the previous owner. That's another whole project to address in the future. The grass won't be a priority this year, unfortunately.

    • @markzick9236
