- Want to fish a pond? These tips will make it much easier! Ponds can be some of the best bass fishing of your entire life if you know what to look for and which baits to throw. Keep it simple this year and use Tim's proven method to break down the water in steps. Don't get caught throwing just your favorite lure over and over again, its time to take your pond fishing to the next level.
It doesn't matter if you're bank fishing or in a boat, this method will help you maximize your time on the pond. Start by covering water with fast moving baits or topwater to gauge how many fish there are and if they're in a feeding mood. Next, switch to slower moving reaction baits to pick off the remainder of the aggressive bass. Finally, wrap it up with finesse baits to catch as many fish as possible.
Not all lures are created equal. Unfortunately there is a lot of junk and hype on the market today. Below you'll find an exhaustive list of baits we have confidence in for both pond and lake fishing. If you're looking to fill a particular category, these are lures we trust. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of every item.

Bro!! I've been fishing off and on my entire life. Definitely not a pro and everything I've learned has been trial and error. This cat made everything so simple to understand. A lot of pro's use confusing fishing jargon that leaves me more confused than when I started. Thank you🎉 Brother!
Pond fishing. So simple, so satisfying, so fun. I have a Jon boat but pond fishing and bank fishing is just so much simpler when life is busy with family/kids and you don't have hours to spend on the water. Love the vid.
Life long pond fisherman!! Love these 👍🏻😎 Good morning fellow Insomniacs👊🏼🤪 Tim and Matt
Thanks guys. I love the content of your video's. I grew up fishing on ponds. Now my son and my grandson fish it. Good times and great memories. I also want to thank y'all for your gear recommendations. I no longer waste money buying things I don't like. Your spot on here. Stay healthy and keep fishing.
Tim one of the best videos and explanations I’ve ever seen. The way you broke it down for that body of water is amazing
Dude I appreciate the videos..I'm 31 and didn't have a father to show me these kid of things. iv recently been trying to get my son in fishing and this is the kind of stuff iv been looking for
Awesome! We're so happy to help! It sounds like you're doing a great job with him 👍🏼
I am hitting the ponds today and I have been struggling lately and you guys drop this!!! You guys are the best hands down!! Located in NYC!!
The information on how you approach a new pond was interesting and very helpful. Start with top water is not something I would think about doing. Thanks for another great video.
Caught a 5lb 8oz Largemouth out of a pond two days ago just before this video was posted. I've watched you guys for years. Thanks for teaching us all so much.
Thank you for all of y'alls hard work. You guys keep me on top of my fishing game ( not that the top is very high for me lol) but y'all have changed the way I look at every body of water and everything I throw out. Thank you.
Love to see videos for us pond fishing anglers. Great job!!! 👍
3 videos in a row!! love it.
Finally a pond video!!! Loved it!!
Thank you, this helps me so much because I only have access to small ponds. Also, I normally use all of these baits and they catch fish. I’ve only ever caught a few 7 pound and over bass in my small ponds and this will help me get so much more.
I love all of your videos. This may be my favorite. The breakdown is awesome. I used this video to repack my fishing "bugout bag". Thank you so much.
Thank you for making this video. I have my own pond that I fish at and we don’t really go to public ponds or lakes. I haven’t caught a bass since March. Yesterday I caught one on a buzz bait. I’ve been bank fishing a lot and have never tried fishing the middle. Today I will go fishing and try the middle. Thanks for the great advice as always and fingers crossed I catch a bass 🤞🏻
Just getting back in to fishing and only have access to shore fish ponds right now...Perfect timing on this vid!
I got a work permit at 14 and bought a scamp setup end of the year. At 16 bought a 16’ flat bottom gas and trolling motor and had 21 different rod reel combos and 4 tackle boxes. Wish I was still that dedicated 😑
You guys make great videos, and I really appreciate it as I'm a new Bass angler. Thanks so much!
Great video man, I grew up pond fishing but bought my first boat a few years ago so now I'm learning the lakes.
That Deck your on is just awesome. Right on the lake....NICE...
A small Texas rigged Rage Tail Ned Cut-R worm has been killing it for my kids this year in ponds. Weedless and they can burn it or hop it back. It’s just the right profile that gets ate!
As always, I love your action packed fishing vids!
Mississippi Pond fishing since 1998! Can’t beat it
Amazing video! Greatly appreciate you guys.
Nice vid. Ole glory waving in the back just adds to the effect!
Going to hit a pond tomorrow, great timing! Thanks Tim!
This is a spicy one thanx tim.
I've learned so much from you guys. Thanks!
Good Stuff !! Going to a private pond this weekend . Can't wait to catch my PB.Keep the amazing content coming !! God Bless
This video was right on time for me thanks
Thank you finally do more pond stuff plz
Nice video🎣❗️
This video really helped me thank a lot, great vid
Love the pond vids
I'm also dealing with some Lily pads and this video has given me some ideas 👍. I'll try them out tomorrow.
Great Video, my new favorite
Awesome and informative video!
Nice deck, not too shabby!
Subscriber for a while, look forward to your videos, espntonjelp get through the winter👍🏽. Please more videos like these for those of us on small water using small water techniques!! Awesome video
Liked it Tim! Here in Illinois that is my kind of fishing. I don't have many large impoundments near so I fish the small ones.
Great video and content
Just a good plan to hit a body of water... appreciate it sir!
Dude....Im telling ya, try the keitech topwater. Rigged the way you have it with or ideally without the blade. My go to hook is the vmc drop dead eighth ounce for the 4.8. Sometimes they go nuts for a bit more subtle topwater....and you can do a sort of 'sub-surface topwater" where youre just barelyt breaking the surface. Drives em nuts. Plus....you can drop it down deep. Caught a hog a couple weeks ago that way...came topwater through some sticks, then dropped it deep as soon as I came past them. Smashed it!
And big thanks for not leaving us shore bound pond guys out!!!!!
I was fortunate to grow up with in a mile of a lake. Plus a neighborhood that had many ponds close to me. Spent the majority of my summers on those ponds and lake.
The 6” top hook swim bait is good to find that BIG fish too! Caught a 8# few years ago on one
Love the vids. My favorite is a 3.8 paddle tail swimbait on a weedless swimbait hook. And slowly pull it right where the grass begins
I'd go so far as to step up to the 4.3 or the 4.8 inch one like Tim said. I've caught surprisingly small bass on it. It's amazing what even those smaller fish will lash out at and try to eat.
Even if your fish aren't that big, the 4.3/4.8 catches better fish overall.
Ngl. This is a superb channel 👍🏽
Something you forgot, which is my go-to no matter the Pond. Manns baby-1! Old school lure but a KILLER for ponds!!!! You can lower your rod to go deeper or fish it like a top water!
This helped me so much! Thank you! I went fishing at a pond today and tried everything I had, but I just couldn't get the fish to bite.
Something a little under the radar that you might like to try also.. especially if you have some really mucky bottom ponds that baits get sucked into. Tokyo rig. The bait sits on top of grass and muck.. I love a brush hog/baby brush hog or a PitBoss style bait for ponds. Killed it with the Tokyo Rig last spring for me and caught a couple in March this year before my state closed my fishing spots.
Mr Tim and Mr Matt could yall do a video on boat safety I think we over look it a lot because I did and know two surgeries in with broken leg and a torn acl by just getting out of the boat the wrong way yall's videos has helped me a lot thank you
I learned in ponds as well i love this idea. Can you please do a video on tidal at some point? Im lost on my current rivers. Theyre here one minute gone the next and its all saltwater species the next.
That Man Bear Pig in Tramp Stamp is a pond killer!
As a twelve year-old my younger brother, neighborhood friends and I had access to the local spring water company's retention reservoir. We kiddies didn't know what we were privileged to have. "The Reservoir", or the Rez, had largemouth bass, bluegills and shiners in abundance. In the windward corner there was a pile of leaves that'd been composting for decades. Under the leaves in the rich, loamy soil were the fattest, most active yet delicate nightcrawler-sized worms any of us had ever seen in our then-short lives. Gently putting one of those wriggling, fat worms on an Eagle Claw factory-tied, snelled hook practically guaranteed a hook-up with a bass that had an interest in self-preservation so they'd fight like crazy.
Once I caught a fat six inch shiner and threw it in the Rez to see what I could catch. A largemouth bass of considerable size, I can still see it in my mind's eye, came up from the depths to inhale that shiner, _sideways_ . My light tackle was nowhere near a match for this huge fish. With a sound like a .22 going-off right next to my ear the bass had broken my 6 lb. test Berkley Trilene and disappeared.
We didn't know what we had. By age thirteen or so we chose to pursue stocked trout in a creek on the other side of town. We'd all but forgotten the Rez. In between our catching all of the stocked rainbow and brown trout in our favored two-mile stretch of the creek we found that there was a native population of smallmouth bass that enthusiastically chased our C.P. Swing spinning lures. My younger brother, easily a better natural fisherman than me, regularly brought eighteen and twenty-inch smallmouth bass to his net. I caught some myself occasionally.
In May of 1987, just as my wife and I were about to make settlement on our new home, I fished the creek using a #2 Mepps Black Fury. I hooked a 12" smallmouth and this fish, for some reason, was in an absolute panic as I sought to bring it in. When my fish was five feet or so away I saw what had caused it to be so animated. A huge smallmouth, I won't even try to estimate its enormous size, was right behind my little bass. That pursuing smallmouth had eyes the size of 50 cent pieces and we looked at each other for a millisecond before it turned 180° to get back to safety. Then came a period where I didn't fish in that spot for over twenty-five years. When I visited it again in 2015 the effects of high water and erosion had made some spots unrecognizable. I reflected on it all, reflected on my nearly fifty years of fishing my local waters where untold mysteries still waited to present themselves.
That bass blowing up on the buzz bait at 6:00 is worth the whole video
Great video targeted at the often overlooked pond fishing community.
Cought 32 Saturday biggest was 3.5lbs
Cought 40 Tuesday in the same pond biggest was 2 3/4lbs. Watched about 8 guys total between the two days maybe land 4-8 fish. It's not always about Senkos, Jigs and using everything everybody does. I used a finesse underspin and my favorite drop shot bait from a small company on the east coast. Slayed the local Sonoma county ponds 😎
I live in Alabama near the Tennessee river. Our ponds are very grassy as well, weedless set ups are the norm really
I wish there were ponds close to where I live! I would love to pond jump fishing
Nice viode bro 💯👍
Great video, I’m heading out to a pond right now. This pond is a heavy lily pad pond.
Throw a frog or a weightless senko
The hollow body sunfish worked really well for my pond
How did it go??
Great vid I need this the pond I fish has chemicals in it right now to keep the grass down.
I love u guys but my bank account doesn't and my wife won't when she gets the statement😅
Reminds me of a Tackle Warehouse review I saw once: "My wife said she's gonna divorce me if I buy any more tackle. I sure am gonna miss her." 😂😂
I've been having a lot of luck with the baby bass colored fluke but rigged weightless. Most of the hits on that initial drop.
You guys should do a live Q&A
Watch all your video's, fished a 2 day tournament last weekend at Lake Kissimmee and threw the flashy swimmer with a keitech all day and every fish we caught that weekend was on that bait. Tried the largo shad and found that I was getting a lot of strikes but I think the plastic was harder and fish weren't grabbing it and holding onto it like they did the keitch's. Tried the Largo shad on the flashy swimmer couldn't throw it on the other underspin you guys always suggest cause of the vegetation in the lake and it would constatnly get hung up throwing it thru the grass. My local lake that I fish almost every night is covered with vegetation and this is the only bait I seem to get them to hit on. Tried a frog and have not had any luck. Cant wait for it to die off so it clears up my fishing spot so I can get in there and starting getting those big ones again.
do you guys recommend any scents/attractants? and would you apply for soft plastics only? or hard body/topwater lures as well?
the pond bass down here in texas get huge. i fish 6-8" swimbaits and catch 7+
I caught a 4.5 pounder out of our pond that is 4 years old the other day. I'm hoping the fish in it grow to 7+. Would be awesome.
Where?!
@@matt6951 most texas ponds honestly
Sometimes advanced anglers forget pond anglers don’t have the desire or the funds to afford things you take for granted. Carrying an armada of tackle is not necessary or efficient fishing ponds. The most fun fishing ponds provide is simplicity of fishing for fish in a small body of water. Spending $ 20 dollars for a lure is not on the list of any pond anglers list of needs. Fish in small ponds tend to be small on average so lure choice makes small sizes best. Berkley Beetle Spins range from a dollar two a little more and come in sizes from 1/32 oz. to 1/4 oz. and make perfect pond lures. Soft plastic ribbon tail worms from 4 to 7½-inches fished weightless, add a pack of Tru-Turn worm hooks and you spent $6 dollars. Add a couple 5/16th Scum Frogs and you spent $7 dollars more, the total is about 20-dollars. Add some fishing pliers, line cutter, rubber boots, net and one pole; rod and reel, done. Finger nail clippers make good line cutters, needle nose pliers are easy to find in any home as well as rubber boots. You can find a rod combo for under $50 dollars if you search, a pack rod model is perfect. All totaled you only need less than $100 dollars to fish. You can carry everything in you bought in pair of cargo pants and shirt with big pockets. You can catch more fish using one rod than trying to drag a bunch of rods around you don’t need fishing ponds.
Great video, I fish a sand pit and it is deep, 25 to 30 ft. Do I still need to cash to the deepest part?
Can you do a video on high pressured community ponds. That’s the majority of what is near me
When fishing in a pond line tends to get a bit dirty especially if using mono or fluoro should I clean it and what’s the best way too?
Kids are our fishing future!
what are your opinions on googan baits? i personally love them and think you guys should try them, please do a review on them
Quick question what do you consider shallow or deep pond? What changes a pond to a lake ? Larger surface area?
Great video man, Brush hogs catch monsters in ponds.
I can’t catch nothing on one I always go with the lizard
I been doing alot of pond fishing this year rather then the bigger lakes due to weather being so Sparatic and not consistant But I have been catching most my fish on spinnerbaits and crank baits ...Dont get me wrong been throwing Swim Jigs and Flipping jigs also with success but my top 5 biggest pond bass have been on spinnerbaits!
Need to go to store and get some more top water lures.
Balsa jerkbaits, poppers, Texas rig worm w/ a nailweight in the tail, & weightless Keitechs
No crankbaits? A Bandit 100 and a Scatter Rap are two of my favorite lures to use from shore. They're small enough to get bit by smaller bass or crappie but still get plenty of bigger bites. Two other good baits for ponds are the Rebel Crickhopper Popper and the original Crickhopper. You can twitch them near grassy shorelines or overhanging trees and catch everything from bluegills to monster bass.
Hey guys, quick question about a pond i fish. To set the scene This pond is a 50-60 acre pond located in michigan. It is a gravel pit, very deep, and around 20 to 30 feet at the max. It drops off right at the bank. It is loaded with 1-3 lb bass and has a few giants. I mean giants for Michigan, i caught a 6 lber and lost one that was probably 8 on a bed. Our best luck is on a senko, dirty jigs finesse jig, and a jack hammer. Also it has 15 foot vis. We have has multiple encounters with giants and they are not interested at all. What would you recommend i use?? Also i dont think its the line. I use 6 lb leader on my spinning rod and 12 lb leader on my casting. Thanks.
Hey tim, my pond i fish all the time has a lot of fish but no big ones, biggest is about 2-3 2lbers most fish are around .75-1 pound, any tips on how to catch at a pond with smaller fish?
What colors do you prefer when a pond has only bass and garlic. I would think you would choose white or green or chartreuse but I don't know.
Tim!!!!!
How is the Ned rig not on here. Probably one of the best pond bait out there
Could you guys please do some googan bait reviews
6 inch floating worm, Texas rig, weightless.
what colors should you get for the brush hog and bear pig?
How do I match the hatch if I’m not sure what’s in my specific pond?
Would you apply this to smaller natural lakes?
Opinión on Best Lure for very small pond close to dark for largemouth bass?
Tim I just absolutely love you and Matt! I have learned sooooooo much from you two. Everything from this video, to matt traveling the county, to you fighting wild fires. Thanks for you service as a Warden,Tim. What size hook is your go to for texas rigging? Also for the horny toad? Tight lines fellas🎣💯 Following since day 1!
"most ponds arent that pressured"
*Public SoCal ponds*
"Am I a joke to you?"
YEAH REALLY! I'm in Southern Louisiana from the bank and 99% of the ponds that I have found are soooo heavily pressured, you really gotta work for 1 or 2 fish MOST of the time!
Ditto for Chicago Park District ponds and lagoons!!!😱🤯
Man you are SO spot on @Odysseus S -- esp nowadays!! 😂 😂 😂
Same out here in the Bay!
Dude we dont even have any public ponds in the Central Valley so atleast you got that😅 and if there is a public pond its usually surrounded by trash left by other fisherman 🤦♂️
Hey guys. Just getting into pond fishing. Any color recommendations on the baits Tim talked about for real muddy water? I don’t know if the same colors in the description apply in real muddy situations.. anything helps.. thanks!
In muddy water i use either black and blue or something bright like a chartreuse and white. Just remember dirty water you want bright colors so fish can see it, minus the black and blue. Idk why but black and blue is good for muddy water. For clear water use natural colors
Most of all of my ponds are full of that gross algae moss cant even touch bottom without ur whole bait beeing covered and alot of time its every cast can someone help me out what should i do?
what kind of hooks do you use with man bear pig and whopper plopped?
What is the best swimbait that is 6+ inches?
A place you guys should go bass fishing is in Okoboji Iowa I could have you guys stay in our cabin and I could take you out
Too bad mine is flooded right now, we had record rainfall in Ohio, it’s full of 3-6 lb largemouth, they were primarily on beds , I’m hoping the flooding doesn’t affect the spawn
