      Think about how cool and wondrous that is, the sort of reverence it can inspire for the universe. The real universe that you and I and everyone and every thing, living and not, is a part of. Now compare that to a worldview that says your sole purpose on Earth is to bring "glory," whatever that means, to a being who is supposedly good, but not for any particular reason, just because. A being who would just as soon abandon you to perdition for failing to bring "glory" to him. Again, whatever that means.

We might make a few mistakes trying to fill in the gaps due to a lack of puzzle pieces, but it's a damn sight better than reading a completely unfalsifiable biblical account of human history and assuming everything in that book is 100% true and accurate. Hooved animals, break up that thin layer, and it gets blown away by the wind, washes away when it rains, and so on. The early settlers tried to use European farming methods, and they almost died of starvation. If they’d asked the indigenous people, which plants, fruits and vegetables were edible, the environment would be in better shape, because they would have grown those plants as crops, and eaten the animals that had evolved in Australia’s unique environment. The dawn of American democracy didn’t come in 1776, with the Declaration of Independence. It didn’t come in 1788, when the Constitution was ratified by the states, or in 1789, when George Washington took office.
    The symbolic birth of our system of government didn’t come until its noble ideals were actually put to the test.
    On September 19, 215 years ago, Washington published his farewell address, marking one of the first peaceful transfers of power in American history and cementing the country’s status as a stable, democratic state.
    This moment was crucial for creating the in-and-out system of government that we have.
    And this is unique. In that time and era, politicians would gain power, or kings would stay in office until they die.
    At that stage in American history, before precedents such as the two-term limit were even set, many were uncertain about what would happen after a galvanizing figure like Washington resigned office.
    But at this critical juncture, the leadership of Washington and others proved more than adequate to preserve the democracy.
    “Stepping down from power is unique..”
    “It’s a powerful statement about Washington and American democracy..”

      @old_grey_cat Před 11 dny +1

      The trouble is that the Creationists use "adaptation" differently, denying the underlying random variations which make some groups more fit to breed and thus continue in particular (especially changing) circumstances. They will admit that some humans have mutations in their genes which mean they get some disorder or have some ability (e.g. 4 cone types in the eye rather than 3, giving colour perception differences) never seen in the family before, but often deny that this is an aspect of evolution. They do not see antibiotic resistance in bacteria, or new variants of viruses as evidence of evolution in action, they call it "adaptation" as though it isn't random mutations where some prosper and others fail - they effectively imply it is in some sense willed, as though no mutations fail.
      I find it fruitful to ask them "Can you explain what you mean by adaptation?" They generally have used it as a block - a word removing access to thinking about the process involved - but some talk about methylisation of genes blocking their expression. Knowing what they understand is important. Some have literally no idea of what they mean by "adaptation" beyond "like learning to get along in a new city."
