- In this Michigan fishing video we are fishing for steelhead at Tippy Dam on The Manistee River. This is our first time fishing The Manistee River and our first time seeing Tippy Dam with our own eyes. The Manistee River is a legend among Michigan fisherman and Tippy Dam is a fishing destination for fisherman all over the USA. We had 2 steelhead bobber downs and one good battle that ended badly at the last minute. We also had a few brown trout bobber downs and I landed one nice stocky little brown trout. I have heard pople complain about the stairs at tippy dam but I had no idea that I would want to die walking back up to the parking lot from the dam lol. My back and leggs are still toast from this northern Michigan fishing trip and I had to take 2 days off from fishing for my body to heal lol. Despite the pain and the long drive Jason and I both cant wait to go back to tippy dam and chase more steelhead and brown trout!
Tippy Dam or Tippy Hydro was built 1918 and is a hydroelectric dam operated by Consumers Energy. The original name of the dam was Junction Hydro, but it was renamed to honor a Consumers board of directors member, Charles W. Tippy. The dam spans the Manistee River about 170 miles from its headwaters which include Manistee Lake, on the river's way to Lake Michigan.
Tippy Dam State Recreation Area is managed and operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a state park. Just below Tippy Dam is one of the finest trout, steelhead, and salmon fishing areas in Michigan. During the fall salmon run anglers line the banks shoulder to shoulder trying to catch king salmon that can weigh well over 20 pounds.
The Manistee River in the U.S. state of Michigan, runs 190 miles (310 km)[2] through the northwestern Lower Peninsula; it now passes through the contemporary villages of Sharon, Smithville, and Mesick, entering Lake Michigan at Manistee. It is considered, like the nearby Au Sable River, to be one of the best trout fisheries east of the Rockies.
The river rises in the sand hills in southeastern Antrim County, on the border with Otsego County, about 6 miles (10 km) southeast of the town of Alba. These deep glacial sands provide it with a remarkably stable flow of clean cold water year round, making it a popular river for fishing as well as canoeing. Over the course of its length, it drops in elevation from around 1,250 to 579 feet (381 to 176 m), with an average stream gradient of about 2.9 feet per mile
The name "Manistee" is from an Ojibwe word whose derivation is uncertain.[4] However, it may be from ministigweyaa, "river with islands at its mouth".[5][6] The Ojibwe (Chippewa in the United States) and Ottawa peoples lived along the river, with the Ottawa having a reservation on the river from 1836. The federally recognized Little River Band of Ottawa Indians continues to occupy its reservation in Manistee County, as well as lands in Mason County.
Historically, the upper river was renowned for its outstanding grayling fishery, among the finest in the world. Catches in excess of 1000 fish per weekend outing were commonly reported up until the 1880s, when extensive logging in the area ruined the streams and habitat. Logging in the area commenced in earnest by European-American settlers between 1880 and 1910, with peak production occurring in the 1890s. Logging denuded habitat areas, with silt runoff and logging debris degrading the water quality of the river.
The river's relatively large size, stable flows, and dearth of cataracts or other difficult passages made it ideal for the transportation of lumber. During this period huge numbers of white pine logs, some as large as 6 feet (1.8 m) in diameter, were floated down the river to the port at Manistee and eventually on to the lumber markets of Grand Rapids, Milwaukee and Chicago. The wood was used to build the cities and towns of the Midwestern United States. Some of these logs became trapped at various points on the river, and can be seen today along the river bottom.

Wow! Used to love going up there, stopping at the Stockade for some tacos and a cold beer. I remember opening day being at Tippy Dam the night before at 1130.
Nice! It sure is a great spot! This was our first time there.
Yeah I need to get a center pin dude! Great video Michigan brother 👍
Once you pin you won’t float fish with a
Spinning reel agian lol there nice.
Great variety of fish there at the beginning. .
Some of the highlights :) thanks for watching!
Thanks for video.
Thanks for watching!
Nice place to fish
I fell in love quick lol
Nice video. I hope to run into you guys sometime next spring or summer if you guys ever get out to the red cedar river in the Williamston area ;)
I love the red cedar but fished it less than usual this year. It’s been low all year :(
I used to live in williamston but just moved to Petoskey last year
@@TrevinBoyce how’s the fishing in Petoskey?
That place was loaded with kings mid October this year
I bet it was lol probably loaded with fisherman too...
@@ReelMichiganAnglers yep. We did good though. Lol. Did you guys hook any salmon on this trip?? Just wondering. I know some of them run pretty late in the year and I heard of people catching them up into January as well.
@@danielmckinney2194 no but I heard there were still some kings around...
@@danielmckinney2194 no but I heard there was some kings still around. my buddy got a coho today lol anything is possible.
Super👍
Thank you 👍
Fish call @ 9:57 😅
Lol for real. That sound is more effective than the fish whistle even lol
@@ReelMichiganAnglers 😂🤣
Have you ever fished the west branch of the red cedar river
I’ve fished it from the mouth in Lansing to williamston.
My first salmon trip, heading to tippy for a day Monday. Any body have any location tips?? MUCH appreciated!!
I have always done best in the coffer. If there’s a bunch of people in the coffer down stream is good too but I’ve never had any luck down there.
@@ReelMichiganAnglers thx man!
Nice videos, area is awesome. I am not a pro nor do i have a pro card, you might investigate putting more line on reel and check out danny colville info on casting etc.
Thanks. I just respooled it earlier this week. I need to upgrade from this $40 Amazon centerpin lol I got it for free from a buddy to test and see if I like it and it’s still better than a spinning reel. My buddy Jason in this video just ordered a custom coville so I’m gonna try to steal his okuma pin. I got plans for more rods and reels for sure but I’m broke as a joke at the moment. I also recently watched his videos and am starting to get the hang of the Wallis cast but I need a legit pin rod too. I have an 8‘6“ that I like despite being really short and then 9‘6“ it’s too stiff and I’ve lost three steel head on it since I got it two weeks ago :(
Great day out chasing them trout, thumbs up and greeting from New Zealand.Check out our Trout fishing videos.Tight lines and regards,, Tony.
Thanks, will do!
What kind of center pin is that
Mine is the one that’s on Amazon for $40 and it’s surprisingly good imo. My buddy was using the okuma aventina in this video.
@@ReelMichiganAnglers awesome..
@@jamiegrames7744 Every once in a while I have problems with the line winding onto the inside and I spend some time untangling it other than that it works really great for $40
@@ReelMichiganAnglers I use a cheap one also so I understand that 100 percent.. and line twist is my problem but I'm still learning so I use side cast .. but have landed so big salmon this last fall on it ..
@@jamiegrames7744 nice! Line twist gets bad after a while. I’m learning to do the Wallis cast now to alleviate the twist.
That’s a weird looking spawn bag
Smaller and rounder is better supposedly but I like to tie some big ones too.
Where was the dog?
It’s a spirit dog...
P-line sucks
I’ve been using FC sniper lately, but I have had overall very good luck with P line salmon, steelhead line and P line tactical fluro. They are both pretty expensive, but so is the FC sniper..
I was there last summer... sad to see all the litter bug pigs still go to the river. It's a treasure and should be treated as such.
People suck. I try to leave nothing but footprints.
@@ReelMichiganAnglers yes sir, that's why your the "Reel Angler"! The trash is disheartening.
