I've been on a long weight loss journey for the past 2 years, and have lost about 24kg/53lbs so far. For the past 6 months, I've essentially had one 100g serving of ice cream for dessert every day.
Saturated fats, sugar, no protein? Yes, definitely. But it keeps me sane, and on the path. As Dr Mike's "25% junk food diet" example, most of my diet is still whole food sources, high in fiber, protein and in micronutrients.
I'm the healthiest I've ever been in my entire adult life. So who is going to tell me to replace that and feel miserable, maybe binging or giving up my diet every time I see a cookie?

Now ive learned if i want chic fil a one sammich and a medium fry after 3-5 days of eating clean is not the end of the world , having a little chocolate and peanut butter as a snack on occasion instead of fruit isnt going to make me morbidly obese. Thanks for the more general health video Dr Mike. I still have more q's. Eg if my goal is good health, don't get cancer, diabetes, etc, while meeting macros, is it really ok to eat a super deep fried frosted donut everyday, or a slice of the cheesiest, greasiest pizza ever, as long as the other 75% of my diet is "healthy whole foods"? More examples like this might help me wrap my head around this. What if one day, all I eat is pizza, macros are met, but the rest of the week, I eat "healthy food" only. That's still at least 75% healthy food. Would that work every week? Or is it different? What about anything with benzoate in it while eating oranges? Plz make more general health vids like this! Preferably with best practices and grains of truth. Thanks Dr Mike!

The problem with what you're recommending is that the real world isn't about taking in macronutrients in perfect portioned quantities. Even if you measure/weigh it all, people still go back for seconds, go and buy food that's not within their macros or on their plan. A good diet plan DOES take emotions, satiety and all that into account and tries to minimize the chances you're going to get hungry enough to blow your calories. Maybe technically 1/2 a snickers bar could fit my macros during a cut. The problem is I'm unlikely to just eat half once I've got started.

It isn't about morality and I don't know why people seem to misunderstood the good/bad dichotomy. Is it a deliberate misunderstanding because they feel "judged" for their choices? Good/bad foods : suitable/unsuitable foods. Some foods are just more suitable for a cut or bulk, due to their calorie density, effect on satiety, nutritional value and so on. I don't see the problem with using the shorthand of "good" or "bad". Arugula is good for me on a cut. Snickers on a cut will make it hard for me to feel satiated, get the nutrition I need from food and will decrease the likelihood I stick to the plan. It's bad. You yourself frequently advise people to eat "good clean" food during a diet and to continue eating "good clean food, just more" during a reverse. You are aware people have the same issues with the clean/dirty dichotomy as the good/bad one? The thing is, it's not really about language...people just want to believe the fairytale that a diet with a lot of candy or fast food is just as good as salmon and vegetables. I know that when I talk about good/bad food that's what gets people triggered, but their problem is reality, not language.

You kinda restated the central thesis of the video: the food isn't good or bad in itself, certain amounts of a certain food is good or bad for particular purposes, depending on the context. The words are still useful shorthands, as evidenced by his continued use of those terms, but if "good" or "bad" is the beginning and end of your thinking about a certain food (which it clearly isn't for you) then you're probably lacking nuance and being unnecessarily over-restrictive or over-indulgent.

I was having weird issues with my body my doctors didn't know how to fix or diagnose. I was already eating meal prep and pretty healthy. Tried Dr Gundrys "Yes" list of foods for a month, the food info is free. Joint pain, stomach issues, etc all went away. I don't understand what foods were causing it, but going strict on his "yes" list for a month helped me tremendously. I think coffee could of also been an issue. So I don't fully understand... Gundry has a bunch of way over priced supplements that aren't even organic, so I don't touch them. But the diet info helped me.

That's awesome! My thought is that perhaps it was what you STOPPED eating that helped most. A formal elimination and reintroduction diet might tell you a lot about what food groups those might have been so that you can go back to eating all sorts of other foods and only stay away from the offenders. - Dr. Mike

      @genericname3600 Před rokem +1

@@RenaissancePeriodization Agreed. Something was probably irritating my digestive tract, causing other bodily issues. So the elimination diet (his free "yes" list), helped cut an unknown problematic food item from my diet. Also, love your channel and all of your info, thanks again.

I've always viewed food as good or bad based on my personal goals. When people hear me label food as such, I clarify that the term 'bad' typically means the food contains too many calories for my current diet. Eating it would disrupt my balance of macros, particularly my protein intake - at that time. However, tomorrow, I will make that fucking cookie fit my macros.

for example, the ones that are so poorly engineered they can cause fire. and the company that produces them don't want to call them back and so on..

And other computers/parts that are so poorly engineered so they essentially vehicle without breaks.
    Or some Dell computers...

Rather than the good vs. evil whole deal, it’s more about “what is the effect?” of the food we eat…
What do you think the effect of eating a beef steak will be? Let’s make it a well marbled, medium rare tri tip steak. My favorite…. 🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩
    Well…
It will DEFINITELY satisfy hunger, it is nourishing, it will increase the “heat” of the body/good for winter months, it will increase testosterone and is great muscle fuel at least a few hours before workouts or so…. But beef will not help you live an especially long life, depending on how often you eat it. However, you could do worse that way…
    What about oranges? 🍊 🍊🍊
They are quite tasty, like beef, but not quite as filling, though they are sweet and provide quick energy-carbs AND fiber. They will definitely help extend your life.
    What about peanuts 🥜 🥜 🥜 ?
Well, they are filling, like beef, and they have fats and protein, like beef, but the vast majority of individual, single plant foods do not contain complete proteins-with regard to one particular kind of plant food. So, beef is going to feel more filling than peanuts or peanut butter in a way, although peanuts/peanut butter is in a different way going to actually be more calorie dense than beef.
All 3 foods are fine in their place. Cotton candy? Well, I mean, it’s junk food, but a little cotton candy here and there isn’t going to kill you…. 🍭🍬
Which is I think what is being said here.. 🤔🤔
I think Skittles (though) is pretty darn sugary….

I believed that highly processed foods were bad, for about a month. Then I started realizing that there's no finite line between the two, which led me to understand that good and bad are context and preference dependent. Good and bad just have no place in a conversation about food.

How many more calories to eat to gain muscle depends an how much muscle and how fast you can and want to gain it, which is dependent on your genetics, work ethic, age, sex, locat... sorry, wrong chat room... etc. Try "a few more" than your current maintenance TDEE and go from there.

Looking at the obesity rates, which continue to rise, I'd say not enough people are "running from cookies and rice". I think the fatties who don't care FAR outweigh any people with an aversion to junk foods.
