Hi guys, Thanks for watching the video. I want to make a correction the year GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL was started is 1089 and it was completed in 1499.
i think most british people realised that it must have been a misreading, or possibly, though less likely, the date of a renaming. it is so obviously pre the early modern period, or more simply, pre-reformation, in its structure.
That is interesting because I thought I saw a Saxon Arch but presumed I was mistaken, so, perhaps I wasn't.
Thankfully Henry VIII didn't tear it down because it contained the bodies of several English Kings...
It is a truly beautiful church. I’ve yet to make it to Gloucester, in fact I’ve hardly seen any of this entire section of southwest England. Your visits to this town, Bristol and other locations is giving me lots of ideas for future trips. Thank you for providing me with a peep into the region.

I work in the Quays shopping center. Gloucester isn't my favorite place to live, but being so close to the Cathedral is a perk. It's such a relaxing place where you can unwind and reflect.
I would highly recommend my childhood village of Lacock, in Wiltshire! It's a beautiful village, full of history and so many films have been shot there, including Harry Potter.

I went to the cathedral school (situated next door). The whole school attended a service every morning in the cathedral.
The docks were a rat-infested tip in those days and getting it sorted out over the past few years is one of the good things the local council have done.
I was a tour guide for the city and could have shown you so much, including stuff about the seige of Gloucester during the civil war (ours, not yours!) including where cannon balls struck one of the churches, some of the remains of the city walls (Roman in origin and demolished after the civil war as punishment for not surrendering!) and where Bishop Hooper was burned at the stake for upsetting the wrong people.

The hallways of the cathedral has appeared in movies. They were used as the hallways for Hogwards during the early Harry Potter movies
...and in May 2019 Doctor Who came to town. Filming much of the episode 'Fugitive of the Judoon' in the square outside the Cathedral.
this is such a lovely vlog- i was born in Gloucester and recently moved back to the area after living on the south coast for the last 30 years. I love it. will definately try the vietnamese restauramt. If you are ever back this way I recommend Hereford cathedral- on a tuesady lunchtime they have an organ recital. Props to Blaire for all that walking whilst pregnant with twins! Much love to you all.
I took my daughters last year to Gloucester it was beautiful weather and we had a lovely time. I was surprised by the Quay side we had a lovely meal here in one of the restaurant

At 6:35 is the uni of Glos accommodation called Blackfriars but the actual university campus is a 20-25 minute walk away from there.
Gloucester used to be a great place , it is now very rundown with a lot of shops closed , i can see the appeal to a tourist , and the place at the end with ppl coming out with pints thats a famous chain of pub/restaurant called spoons or wetherspoons
Congratulations on the coming family extension! Couple of 'left field' visit suggestions for you. Portmerrion in North Wales (Italianate Village) probably best in summer. Secondly, if you drive take Le Shuttle trip to Northern France from Folkestone, Kent and visit the Normandy ports such as Dunkerque, Boulogne & Le Touqet Easy to get to as the Fast A16 route passes all over them in France. All the best with new additions 🙏

I have quite an amusing story about Gloucester Cathedral. Back in the 80’s I was attending my brother’s graduation ceremony. Myself and father, whilst waiting for mother outside the Ladies Loo near the cloisters was watching a small chap briskly walking towards up dressed in all the garb of a Doctorate, turned and walked into the Ladies loo only to very quickly beat an embarrassing retreat😊. I turned and said to my father, “all that education and he couldn’t read the notice clearly on display “Ladies Toilet”!😂

Not me having lived in gloucester all my life . Greek on the docks is pretty new and gets a lot of hype round here, but the food is quite expensive for the quality. Congrats on the twin btw! ❤
The cathedral is nice they have cool art exhibitions in there sometimes. You need to see all the parts of the COTSWOLDS. Lots of beautiful English countryside along the way and will make a great playlist of vids.
Gloucester is a pleasing city, though I prefer nearby Hereford. Hereford has been the seat of a diocese since 670, and its present cathedral (built in 1079) is home to the UNESCO heritage Mappa Mundi (a 725 yr-old map), and the biggest chained library of medieval books in the UK. Of course, Hereford is also home to the famous Hereford breed of beef kine. Btw, the famous Three Choirs Festival is well worth a visit. It alternates between Hereford, Gloucester, and Worcester cathedrals, and in July this year will be in Gloucester. The 300th festival will be in 2027 at Hereford.

John Stafford Smith was born in Gloucester and was in the cathedral choir ,he composed the music for To Anacreon in heaven which the tune was later adopted for the American national anthem

@@MacandBlair There is a plaque dedicated to him in the Cathedral. It's where you see the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes flags in your video. Gloucester is my home town and we have lots and lots of history. Did you manage to travel to the wonderful Forest Of Dean which is close by?

The Gloster Aircraft Company designed and built the famous Gladiator, Hawker Hurricane, Hawker Typhoon and Javelin aircraft in Gloucester. Their greatest achievement was building The Meteor, which was the RAF's first jet-powered fighter and the only Allied jet fighter to be put into service during the Second World War.

It's not pronounced "Gloss-cher". It's pronounced "Gloss-ter". The pronunciation of place names in the UK can be confusing for non-locals (even for British people if they're not from the local area) because many places are not pronounced as they are spelled. It's nice to see you visiting so many places in the UK and enjoying yourselves!

A lovely video, and kudos to Blair for managing all of that walking, she did so well! Gloucester cathedral is a jewel. Gloucestershire is my home county, and may I suggest a visit to Tewkesbury in North Gloucestershire, when you are able. It has a beautiful and ancient abbey, lots of black and white buildings from centuries ago, and lovely walks along the river.

I'll second that Tewkesbury may be overlooked not being a city but it's hard to beat for surviving medieval buildings
Interesting, I've never been. Bit of trivia - There's a famous British kids nursery rhyme that goes
'Dr. Foster went to Gloucester (pronounced Gloster as Elliot Grimshaw suggested) in a shower of rain, he stepped in a puddle, right up to his middle, and never went there again.
In those warehouse buildings, Reynolds, Vinings etc every second main floor support beam is 90 foot long 18''x 18''. Each floorboard is 2'' thick. Before it was redeveloped a couple of warehouses were sold off just for the timber.
Not really a place I have wanted to visit. But looks OK. I keep saying that you should visit York & Oxford. So much to see and do 👍🏽

During the early part of the Civil War it was besieged by the Royalist army. The Earl of Essex relieved the siege.

Wetherspoons is a nationwide pub chain. They have the same, very commercial, mass produced pub food menu in every pub.
The big old wall you said about was actually the old Gloucester prison.I think they do tours now
A free house is a pub that is not owned by a brewery. Most pubs are tied which means that they are owned by a brewery and will be obliged to sell the beers that the brewery brews. They might have one or two 'guest beers' from other brewers but most of the beers will be the owner's produce. A free house is able to negotiate with many brewers. Wetherspoons mostly use their freedom to source very cheap beers, but other free houses use their freedom to support local craft breweries.

It's not licenced by a brewery. Sometimes it maybe privately owned but still under license to a brewery.

A beautifully preserved Edwardian shop front, Baker's clock was built in 1904. The bells are struck on the quarter hour by the figures of Old Father Time, John Bull and figures representing Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I can’t believe Blair felt like travelling all that way just a week or 2 to go 😮. I lived there 40 yrs ago it was a dump. I had just moved from Brighton so I was totally miserable.

oh, a 'free house' means a pub that isn't attached to a brewery. So they can sell whatever drinks they want, not what a brewery tells them to. of note, is King Edward the seconds tomb- he was reputably murdered over the river at Berkeley Castle by disembowelling with a red hot poker- rumour in the Forest of Dean is that his screams could be heard over the estuary. Britain's royal history is bloody, man.

The city was ruined in 60s by planners. Apart from the cathedral and quays there is nothing. One of the worst city centres in the country.
