    "Ubuntu MATE is a stable, easy-to-use operating system with a configurable desktop environment. It is ideal for those who want the most out of their computers and prefer a traditional desktop metaphor. With modest hardware requirements it is suitable for modern workstations, single board computers and older hardware alike. Ubuntu MATE makes modern computers fast and old computers usable." I switched to Linux half a year ago. My first Distro I installed was Ubuntu Mate. It is my main driver since then. I tried out many other distros but there was no need to change my system. I am happy with Ubuntu Mate. It is userfriendly and very stable.

    Chris, since that color really seems to bug you: The reason is that it's derived from an herb called mate and the tea made from it. So an earthy green is a totally appropriate color considering the heritage.

    I love the green of MATE :-) I am using MATE since 3.5 years for 12 hours per day and it is my backbone of productivity. I am a great fan of Plasma (KDE desktop) but it takes me too much time to customize it. So I am using Kubuntu only on my laptops (where I have some time during traveling to apply customizations) and MATE on my desktops where I have no time to waste.

    Ubuntu Mate is stable and beautifully crafted. Let's face it computers are supposed to help you get work done. What would be the point messing about for days or weeks getting your hardware to work properly with Arch Linux for example? I have used Linux since the '90's and I do not want to spend more time setting up the system than using it.

    Yup, I'm a fan of Ubuntu Mate too. I've used Mint with Mate as a daily driver, but Ubuntu Mate runs games faster and smoother on the same machine, both based on 16.4 Ubuntu. Can't explain it, but it says good things about Wimpress and his team. I always have some other distros installed on other partitions to play with, but when I need to get work done, this is what I come back to.

    Completely agree. I use Mint + Mate, but I have VirtualBox and about a dozen guests, which are mostly Mate. I particularly seek out Arch based Mate things with their own custom installer. Revenge is the most recent one, and that's quite good.
    Remember, these are installers only. So Antergos and Revenge and Manjaro and so forth, will all give you basically the same distro. The difference is how easy (or not) they are to use and how pretty they look while they're working. ... and how many bits & bobs they'll install as part of the initial setup. Like Chromium... Most distros come with a certain amount of stuff already installed, like firefox and nice weasel & libre office... with these Arch installers, you are given the option to install that stuff, and often a whole lot more...
    They are not for beginners. You may drag your great Auntie Nellie off Win XP and dump her on Mint, but don't dump her on any variant of Arch. - That's not what it's for.

    I switched to Ubuntu MATE from Xubuntu on my laptop. For the most part, I like it. It did require a bit of customization. I don't understand the choice of a bottom panel. It's not comfortable and feels like it boxes you in. So, I ditched that and moved the window list to the top panel. I also replaced the default menu with the MATE menu. I was satisfied after these changes.

    Hi Chris. I went from Suse (early days 1999ish), to Debian (2005) to Ubuntu (2008) and settling on that until November 2016 when I went over to Mint. And do you know what? I want to go back to Ubuntu or try the Arch route like Manjaro.
    I just don't like the way Mint tries to be really user friendly but fails when it comes to using Ubuntu repositories and anything existing outside meant for Ubuntu.
    I'll probably try Mate after this great video, but if I were living alone or was a great multitasking, I'd probably go Manjaro as I was really impressed with that running in a virtual box. It's Peppermint for one netbook though and Puppy Tahr for another - where we do our online banking.

    Question about Mate: I use Solus 3 and clicking on almost anything, like systemn software, of an app, seems to be slow, even 3 or 4 seconds. Windows system response is almost instant. Linux hardware is 2.2ghz, brand new 7200rpm HDD, so medium speed, 10 years old. Is the delay in Solus cause by the desktop? Thanks for any advice!

    Speaking of DEs. What is the difference between xfce and mate? Which one is best for high end gaming and stability? They seem so similar.

    • @orcaflotta7867
      @orcaflotta7867 Před 7 lety +3

      Xfce is like the poor cousin of MATE, lightweight and bereft of many creature comforts for no reason. But yes, you're right, MATE, Xfce and Cinnamon are pretty similar from usability, look and feel. But MATE is a evolved Gnome2, while Xfce and Cinn are based on Gnome3. From the three of them MATE is the most complete and customizable and as fast as the others, even a bit faster and a heckofalot more stable than Cinnamon. And MATE works perfectly in conjunction with Manjaro. It's my trusted combination since 4 or 5 years now.

    • @zeliph
      @zeliph Před 7 lety

      Personally, I use Manjaro Gnome 3 because it feels a lot different than the classic windows desktop experience.
      But I understand that people coming from Windows don't know what DE to choose (I tried all 3 [xfce,cinnamon,mate] in the past, but I am unable to tell which one is more stable).
      Cool, I'll recommend MATE to my friend, if it's considered more stable than xfce & cinnamon. Thanks!

    • @serge5046
      @serge5046 Před 7 lety +2

      Sorry to correct you but XFCE is surely not the poor cousin of Mate. Have a look at these articles: zdnet.com/article/how-to-customise-your-linux-desktop-xfce/ and lifewire.com/customize-xfce-desktop-environment-2202080
      Then there are the videos of midfingr and gotbletu. Both of them have done a lot of customizations in XFCE. Gotbletu has a series of 32 videos on XFCE customization!!!
      Best regards,
      Serge

    • @orcaflotta7867
      @orcaflotta7867 Před 7 lety

      Not saying that it can't be done, Serge, but I, as a clueless end-user, judge distros by how they come fresh outta the box. And particularly from Mid we won't see any more customizations since he passed away last year. The whole evolution of Xfce is kinda spotty and the dev team is shrinking afaik. Althewhile MATE is under heavy development and getting better with each day. It's just cleaner and better thought out by design as it's based on the Gnome 2, while Xfce is an attempt to make the badly flawed Gnome 3 bearable, same as Cinnamon. Brrrr, shudder :o

    Currently using Ubuntu MATE as my daily OS in an attempt to resolve this, to no avail.

  • @bigshotjeev
    @bigshotjeev Před 6 lety

    I do like Mate Desktop Environment but the fact is, it looks and feels very much outdated. I was using this DE when it was in Gnome 2 form and during then I was in College. Now after ten or fifteen years I dont see any change made by the Mate developers after they forked Gnome 2. They haven't put much effort on the aesthetic part of this DE. At least it looks decent in Ubuntu Mate but it looks so ugly when you install it as Mate Desktop on (for e.g.) Arch. I know its customisable and all, but if out of the box it looks beautiful and feels modern, then one would require to do very little customisation in order to suit his need.

      Mika Keskikastari this is ubuntu using the mate desktop environment. Instead of the default ubuntu with gnome shell. You can get Manjaro with the mate desktop. Ubuntu like manjaro or plain arch itself Supports multiple desktop environments like xfce, gnome, kde , and mate. Ubuntu mate is ubuntu under the hood with the same package repositories it just presents you will a different user interface.
