  • My daughter called me in a panic about her car having problems overheating. She did great with what I taught her and she shut it down at the first indication of a problem (very proud of her!) Turns out, there was a coolant leak at the timing cover. So we get busy fixing it up!

    *gotta go work on kaity's 3.4L tomorrow just simple things at first but could easily get more involved just like this one. yeag i had to change that coolant fitting out on the tahoe too. it developed a hole rather quickly on me and the replacement didn't seem like it wanted to seat right or seal but i crossed my fingers and shoved it in there anyway and it;s been working ever since*

    4.15.24. 💁🏻‍♂️Purchase the Lisle 48300 pushrod removal tool so you don’t need to loosen the rocker arm bolts❗️ if you don’t use the pushrod removal tool, then you should make sure EACH cylinders valves are closed @ TDC on its compression stroke. Because if you do not do either, you risk stripping the aluminum threads in the heads, that the rocker arm bolts, thread into⚠️ The reason being is,just if you try unbolting the rocker arm bolts with the valves being actuated by the cam, that threaded junction in the aluminum head/rocker arm bolt area is under tremendous tension, which will most likely result in stripped aluminum threads! Then you’ll have the pleasure of repairing the threads! If you end up having to repair the threads, then by all means utilize Time-Sert’s®️ they make two kits specifically to repair these threads in these engines! Part# 1812CORE for M8x1.25 & 1015CORE for M10x1.5 threads 🇺🇸

    That looked like a pain in the arse, you never get away with "Just" the bit you wanted to change, but your daughter will not see those problems later, thats good :-D
    A gasket behind pushrods, i hope the designer was shot for that.
    No one likes to disturb old worn in parts, its allways a risk.
    Sounds like you and your son would make a good repair company, Palidini&Son Est: 2017. :-D

    Hey,the part or the video missing is what I'm needing most. How do you seal it to the pan? Did you coat the timing gasket with silicone? On both sides?
    Thanks

    Remember when you pull this manifold taking cardboard box 12 holes just like it sitting in the car the pushrods are not the same length put the wrong pushrod in you can bend the push rod and or been the valve and that is a big ol s***

  • @46lfries
    @46lfries Před 5 lety

    If you rebuild an engine and put new pistons in it you can press the pins out do not press them in you could damage the rod the technique is heat the Rod on up 245 degrees Slide the pen to the rod

    Get yourself a push rod removal tool. Makes doing the intakes 4x quicker and less risk of stripping rocker arm threads.

    I have a 2002 Century 3.1 SFI engine with a similar leak. Do you happen to know if this is the SFI 3100 engine? I ask as mine appears it may be leaking from the same area and I wanted to be sure if the engine is the same that mine likely has a coolant port in the same area under the timing cover as well.

    Thanks for sharing this video , I have a 94 Cutlass Ciera with the same engine, only 131,000 miles on it. In my situation exactly a week ago I’m pretty sure the timing chain came off the sprocket wheel, as the motor stalled ( thankfully in a parking lot), I could not get it restarted, and when you try to start it now, it sounds like a dry, fuelless engine (I checked fuel pump, it’ and sending unit are only a year old, plenty of gas coming, also replaced all coils and ignition control module) and it turns over like there’s no connection between crankshaft and camshaft. I’m guessing this is the timing wheel and chain. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

    • @46lfries
      @46lfries Před 5 lety

      If you lost a timing chain in that motor the valves are bent you won't get compression these motors are interference engines you'll have to get the the heads repaired it will cost you $140 to pressure check get the valves ground and each head your car might not be worth that maybe in a hundred Thirty-One thousand miles at 200,000 miles the cam bearings will be completely worn out if you're still driving it sell the damn thing

      @Danyil Underwood Dexcool gets such a bad rap. I think it's mostly just the result of poor maintenance... probably from the same people that never change their oil. 250K miles on my car and never had any Dexcool problems.Not even sure why people talk about air and dex cool. More like OIL mixing with dexcool will gum it up. I've left containers of this stuff sitting open for weeks never seen it do that. It just acts like normal coolant.

    I need to tell you this you're really need to know it there's not a lot of stock holding the cam bearings in am mine were wore out when I rebuilt engine do not get this engine hot beside blowing a head gasket you can spin a cam bearing my machine shop guy warned me you'll be fine last you long time just don't get that damn thing hot so if that needle starts going over turn the car off G I can make it another couple miles like hell you will

    Taking the rockers off is unnecessary to change out the LIM,
    but these motards didn't know that and dissed GM's design.
    MacGyver they are not.

    I got to race car mechanics great friends I bought the parts they tore my engine down and put it back together I got about $900 in it bought a rebuild kit online and I had to buy a timing chain from parts store went to the salvage yard and got another head valve seat came out and destroyed it and lock the s*** out of my Pistons if you got 200,000 miles on that engine 3.1 get rid of it

  • @187onasimp

    Your daughter should be helping you do this instead of your son. Best way to learn by working on your own ride. Also that's not a stock GM gasket set. That's the FelPro revision where the gasket is made of metal. Someone has fixed a gasket leak on that car before.The reason your gasket leaked is because it looks like someone put RTV over the coolant ports on the gasket. That's a BIG NO NO! You're supposed to install the gaskets dry with no sealer or anything. On that version the rubber seals in the ports tight once the intake is torqued down. Putting in sealant goo around the port interferes with the seal and causes a leaks. It's also stamped on the gasket to install it dry.

    If you have a 3.1 Chevy engine 200000 MI get rid of that damn car every one of them have lousy cam bearings I just tore my engine down rod bearings like new Cam Bearing shot. I had a valve she came apart so I pull the engine tore it down I guess I'm not too smart cars really good a lot of work had new cam bearings install I'm lucky I had never spun 1 they were completely down into the copper if you got a 3.1 Chevy engine 200,000 send a car to the Boneyard
