    This is an amazing lens that is suited to both photo and video work.

    Incredible resolution thanks to new lens mount design giving optimum distance to the sensor.
    The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 STM IS macro was one of the first RF-mount lenses released back in 2018. You may argue that it is not among the most exciting lenses out there but it has a rare quality in today's mirrorless world - it is affordable at around 500USD/550EUR and we have even seen special sales quite a bit below that. Of course, a low price tag alone doesn't cut it yet. However, it is also very fast, provides macro capabilities down to an object magnification of 1:2 plus image stabilization. So is it the steal that it appears to be
    The build quality is pretty good albeit the use of plastics is quite obvious. The inner lens tube moves slightly with the longest extension, about 2cm, at the minimum focus distance. The focus ring operates smoothly. Typical for most Canon RF lenses, it features an additional control ring that can be configured to serve various functions. Weather-sealing is not provided - probably a cost-cutting measure. The lens hood is an optional accessory that will set you short by another 50USD/EUR. It's probably not worth it because it's tiny really
    The Canon lens uses a stepping motor (STM) for auto-focusing. On the EOS R, the AF speed is Ok but we won't describe it as quick. Unlike Canon's USM, the STM is also not noiseless but emits a high pitch sound during AF operations. Surprisingly, we had a few issues with AF accuracy which is usually a no-brainer on mirrorless cameras. Manual focusing works "by wire" thus you actually drive the AF motor when turning the focus ring. Full-time manual focusing remains, of course, possible.
    The image stabilizer is rated at an efficiency of 5 f-stops. A bold claim but the system does come close.

    hey there, the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM is by far the best, most affordable native macro lens for the R5, R5c, R6, R7 or c70. I cant believe how amazing the Af and IS works on this lens.
    Its freakishly good. Examples in the video. What do you all think of this lens? Is it something you own? Or would like to own? Great work Canon....

      Just wanted to say I'm loving the Canon 35 macro on my Komodo, especially when operating a gimbal. It's super sharp. The one thing that annoys me is when the lens doesn't retract when shutting off the camera.

    I was so close to buying this lens. But since I own the RF 15-35 2.8, I actually am waiting for the RF 35 1.2/4 L lens to finally be released. 35mm is such a cool focal length for indoor videos and with 1.2 it could provide some powerful bokeh.

    Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? In price it is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work? Everyone has their own opinion and is already confused

      Hey there, did you see the examples in the video - they are at 120 fps. Then the camera moves in ECU - its was moving fast and the AF nailed it time over time.

    • @EntrNmHre
      @EntrNmHre  Před 2 lety +2

      I own several dedicated professional video cameras. But only the C70 and R5/c have RF mount. The r5 has superior to both the R5c and the c70. Thats why I test with the r5.
      The Canon Vixia HF G60 is a fixed zoomed lens consumer grade camera.
      The work I do requires a different grade of cameras.
      There is nothing wrong with the G60, it would be perfect for a travel doco, shooting news and family stuff. Looks like a great little all in one.

      @@Hardik_P oh ok its a small rig cage for the EOS R/5. I wouldn't recommend it. It flexes a lot. It is not rigid at all. Plus part of the cage makes using the RF to EF VND adapter a pain to use because it blocks the filter from being removed. For slightly more money you could get a much better system from @Kondorblue. Their cage for the r5 C solves many of the issues that the small rig R system cages create. I don't have one, but the reviews seem to be overwhelmingly stellar.
