      Yep, this is the lens that really attracts me in their system (and I shoot a7rii). A great value 35mm, plus macro - such a useful walkaround lens. For me, Sony's lenses don't focus close enough.

    • @tyroneparker8399
      @tyroneparker8399 Před 4 lety +4

      I got tired of Sony. I had an a6000 for the longest, then got an a7ii and had that for about a year. (Enjoyed my a6000 a lot better than the a7ii). Hated the file formats and Sony just being a headache overall. I got a brand new canon T5i for $150 that came with the standard 18-55 and another auto telephoto lens. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Canon is more intuitive and produces great products for a great price. Funny how I said I’d never get a canon. Never knock it until you try it. I certainly ate my words. Canon rocks!

    Another great review. This might be the perfect lens for Astro panorama shots. It's wide enough for single exposures and looks sharper than the Samyang 14mm f2.8 when it's stopped to f2.8, so sharper and better at the same aperture, and presumably able to accept filters too, unlike the Samyang. A stitched panorama shot at f2.8 might be pretty spectacular from this lens. And it's cheaper than the Samyang, plus it's a Canon lens. This will probably be the next lens I buy before milky way season.

    Thank Chris for reviewing this RF 35 mm f1.8 IS STM macro lens. I intended to buy it for my EOS R camera, but I didn't after testing two new samples of it on shooting far buildings (at >150 ft or 'infinite'). The result: the center was not sharp at wide open, but corners were sharp; this seemed unusual. Probably the lens is more optimized for macro or close range usage except stopping down for far distance objects. DPreview compared this Canon lens with the Nikon Z equivalent lens 35 mm f1.8 S, and it seems the RF 35 mm needs to be stopped down to f2.8 in order to get the center sharp at infinite. I eventually bought the Canon EF 35 mm f2 IS for the R, and it performs extremely well at wide open at all distance.

    I love Christopher Frost's reviews. But, I know he is very picky about every pixel-peeping detail, so I am always surprised when he comes back and says, "in spite of all that, I really did enjoy this lens..." I do understand why, to a degree. There is the technical analysis and there is the perceived user experience. I have bought and enjoyed several lenses that have been picked apart here. As well as some that have been given a decent nod. But, only two he has said he loved and only one of which he said he actually bought for himself (the Canon 55-250mm IS STM II
    That said, I was surprised by how positive he was about this lens. I bought it to use with my RP, in spite of the price (which is a lot for me) and It really is helping me decide to keep it.

    How would you compare this to the Tamron 35 1.8 or 1.4 on the EOSR or R5?

    Is there a way to speed up autofocus in video mode? I dont mind the noise since it's for b-roll.
