How to convert short cage rear derailleur to medium cage (Shimano Ultegra 6770 with 6800 cage)

  • I took a chance and bought Shimano Ultegra 6800 inner and outer plates (derailleur cage) to convert my Shimano Ultegra 6770 di2 rear derailleur from a short cage to a medium cage. I'm using a 34-50 front crankset and an 11-34 rear cassette with this combination. I also use a Sunrace derailleur hanger extension. I didn't need to adjust the gears from 11-28. I did have to adjust the derailleur hanger extension.
    Correction: The Ultegra 6800 is listed to have a 37Tooth capacity. The ultegra 8000-gs has a 39T capacity.

    Great video, and thank you so much. This is exactly what I'm trying to do, although with a mechanical derailleur. Now I feel confident in buying the parts and replacing the derailleur cage. Much thanks for taking the time to make this.

    Try and get better lighting on your next video. There was a lot we couldn't see. I was good that you were able to squeeze by with that next set up. But like the problem I'm having now is that there is more than just putting on a longer or shorter cage. There is also the (like you found out) that the jockey wheel height is not always at the right position and cannot be corrected with a B screw.
    I wanted to go to a 11/25 road set up on my gravel bike instead of the 11/36T that came with the bike. It also had a long cage. So the cage was designed to come way down to accommodate for the larger 36T sprocket. So when i only had a 25T on there the derailleur was too far away from the sprocket and could not be brought closer and when I brought it as close as I could...then it was too close and walking all over the smaller 11T. I got it to work but it was terrible at shifting .
    So I ordered a small cage for my lightweight 11/25 or now 28T sprocket. Didn't need the 36T gearing for my riding and the cassette was heavy as lead.

    • @pedalpowercycling
      @pedalpowercycling  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not sure, each bike rear derailleur hanger is a little different. Some models may require an extender while other bikes mounting point is low enough.

      It looks like the chain slack will work. What rear derailleur are you using? Is it an XT M8000 SGS? That should work. If you're using SGS, then the capacity is 47T. Medium is only 37T capacity on Ultegra 6800 medium cage and probably won't work.

    I have also a Ultegra rear derailleur with an SG cage. The total range that it has to deal with is 46 (50x35 plus 42x11). It is imposible to ride with it. The chain jumps in the moment of leaving the saddle and standing on the pedals. I think shimano is not making any SGS compatible with this derailleur. Do you think that it would be possible to fix an SGS cage from other model or even from other brand? If I cannot find any adaptable cage I will have to think in changing the complete rear derailleur. Do you think that a 3x11 tourist rear derailleur could work with my cassete and with my compact chainrings? Your thoughts are wellcome.

      I have used the hanger extender to modify a 2005 TCR to use an 11-32 cassette but I also ran into the same problem that @pedalpowercycling did on 3 or 4 other bikes that I tried to do the same modification where the derailleur couldn't take up the required extra chain length even with the hanger extender. I used an 8 speed MTB derailleur instead of the extender, a 9 speed derailleur worked even better.

    Guys, cmon, please, don't clone this shitty information! SS and GS derailleurs differs not only with length of the cage. There is also another parallelogram and slighly another geometry! Because of videos like this now I must find GS version to my customer, because I bought SS and install GS cage to it and thought that I'm smarter than many people. But not! This will work only if you will use under 30t cassetes and with this longer cage maybe you can use triple crankset.
