- I took a chance and bought Shimano Ultegra 6800 inner and outer plates (derailleur cage) to convert my Shimano Ultegra 6770 di2 rear derailleur from a short cage to a medium cage. I'm using a 34-50 front crankset and an 11-34 rear cassette with this combination. I also use a Sunrace derailleur hanger extension. I didn't need to adjust the gears from 11-28. I did have to adjust the derailleur hanger extension.
Correction: The Ultegra 6800 is listed to have a 37Tooth capacity. The ultegra 8000-gs has a 39T capacity.

Great video, and thank you so much. This is exactly what I'm trying to do, although with a mechanical derailleur. Now I feel confident in buying the parts and replacing the derailleur cage. Much thanks for taking the time to make this.
Just finished this project. Works well. I put an 11-36 sram cassette on my brother’s bike with 6770 on it. Just like it is mentioned in the video, the trick is to angle the hanger extension back to help clear the largest cog. Thanks so much for this video!
You're welcome, I'm glad you're able to complete the project successfully!
Thanks, this video's a big help.
You're welcome, comments like this encourage me to make more videos.
This is literally what wiggins did to win the 2012 TDF on some of the mountain stages.
Cool, thanks for the info. The 2011 model of my bike frame (BMC SLR01) was the bike ridden by Cadel Evans who won the 2011 TdF.
great video! Great solution!
Thanks Max! Hope you're enjoying cycling too!
great idea
Thank you! Cheers! The 11-34 rear cassette is a huge improvement for lower gears compared to a 11-28.
Try and get better lighting on your next video. There was a lot we couldn't see. I was good that you were able to squeeze by with that next set up. But like the problem I'm having now is that there is more than just putting on a longer or shorter cage. There is also the (like you found out) that the jockey wheel height is not always at the right position and cannot be corrected with a B screw.
I wanted to go to a 11/25 road set up on my gravel bike instead of the 11/36T that came with the bike. It also had a long cage. So the cage was designed to come way down to accommodate for the larger 36T sprocket. So when i only had a 25T on there the derailleur was too far away from the sprocket and could not be brought closer and when I brought it as close as I could...then it was too close and walking all over the smaller 11T. I got it to work but it was terrible at shifting .
So I ordered a small cage for my lightweight 11/25 or now 28T sprocket. Didn't need the 36T gearing for my riding and the cassette was heavy as lead.
Good job finding a compatible rear derailleur! Thanks for the advice, I have lots of bike lights but none specifically for my camera. I've ordered a little LED light for the camera and plan on using it in future videos. Have fun out there on your cool gravel bike!
Thanks for the video!!! I’m trying to do the same thing with basically the same equipment and same first gen di2 derailleur. I’m going from an 11-28 cassette to an 11-32. Did you have to add any links to your chain after the conversion?
Yes! I went with an 11-34 and ended up replacing the chain with a brand new dura ace chain sized appropriately. I'm going to see if an 11-36 fits.
I'm looking to do the same on a 5700 SS derailleur and change the plates to GS ones (from 5700, 6700, 5800 or 6800, whichever I can find). So that I can use it with a 32T cassette. Do I have to get a hanger extender as well? Thanks!
I'm not sure, each bike rear derailleur hanger is a little different. Some models may require an extender while other bikes mounting point is low enough.
Thanks for posting this video. Just one question: which rear cassette did you use ? Was it Tiagra 11-34T ?
Shimano CS-HG500 10-Speed 11-34t Cassette. Good luck!
@@pedalpowercycling Thanks. That's the one I just bought, luckily!
Would this work on a RD-6600 short cage (10 speed) ? What cage model would I need ? Trying to move to a 11-32.
I'm not sure but you might be able to install a 9 speed shimano Mountain rear derailleur instead.
Great video. I have the opposite problem. Do you think i can put an SS cage on a GS Ultegra derailleur?
I don't see why not. Why can't you use the medium cage?
Thanks a lot! You done a great experiment and super clear!!!!
I have a exactly same situation from 6700 SS to GS.
May I have a question about the "tooth capacity explained "
I have front 22-34, rear 11-40T, the Capacity is 41T
Is it still work in 41T capacity? or I need to use 11-36 instead of?
Many thanks
It looks like the chain slack will work. What rear derailleur are you using? Is it an XT M8000 SGS? That should work. If you're using SGS, then the capacity is 47T. Medium is only 37T capacity on Ultegra 6800 medium cage and probably won't work.
@@pedalpowercycling thanks for your reply. I’m using ultegra 6700 with SS cage now. And I will convert it to GS, by using your experience 😅.
As your mention medium cage is 37T max. So I will use 11-36T.
Thanks a lot. I let you know when done😅
@@vincent71611 The capacity is 37T, that doesn't mean you can use a 37T cassette. But with a derailleur hanger extender it might work but the lower / small gears may not shift as well.
@@pedalpowercycling yes. I count front 22-34, 11-36 capacity is 37T. I will try the extender too... Anyway thanks for your advice! 💪🏻💪🏻
@@vincent71611 Oh! If you're running Shimano mechanical shifting 10 speed, then you can use a 9 speed MTB rear derailleur instead. I can make a video on that to show you.
Juts one thing; I don't think you replaced the rubber seal under the inner plate when replacing the spring?
You may be right Keith. However, it's been awhile since this modification and it's still working very well many many months later. Thanks
Nice job, what is the length of new cage arm (center of one hole to center of other hole) thx.
Rough measurement 95mm.
Hi! Thx for this video.. for you its compatible with 9070??
Hi Matteo, the 6800 and 6700 series are not supposed to be compatible but it works. Here's a pic of the 9070 series plate: www.modernbike.com/shimano-dura-ace-rd-9070-rear-derailleur-outer-plate-and-stopper-pin It'll be a try at your own risk.
@@pedalpowercycling thanks!
Does anyone knows if the same medium cage will work on Dura-Ace 7970 rear derailleur?
Unfortunately I don't know but hopefully someone does. Thanks for asking and good luck!
I have Shimano 11 speed, short cage RD6700, do you think I could possible use the same kit 6800 11 that you used? tks..
I don't know, it's do at your own risk. My Di2 might be different than yours even though they're same generation.
Why don't you just buy a medium cage ultegra 6800? My rear derailleur didn't come in a medium or long cage and upgrading in my case meant new everything not just a rear derailleur.
@@pedalpowercycling tks for the response
I have also a Ultegra rear derailleur with an SG cage. The total range that it has to deal with is 46 (50x35 plus 42x11). It is imposible to ride with it. The chain jumps in the moment of leaving the saddle and standing on the pedals. I think shimano is not making any SGS compatible with this derailleur. Do you think that it would be possible to fix an SGS cage from other model or even from other brand? If I cannot find any adaptable cage I will have to think in changing the complete rear derailleur. Do you think that a 3x11 tourist rear derailleur could work with my cassete and with my compact chainrings? Your thoughts are wellcome.
Are you using 11 speed shifters? Which ones? Are you on 11s ultegra rear derailleur? If you're 10 speed you're in luck if 11, not in luck.
Well, everything is 11S: cassette, shimano shifter and chain.
@@eugeniomiguel1 Yep, you're kind of out of luck unless you install mountain bike shifter and rear derailleur. I have this set up on my recumbent. 34-50 front, 11-40 or 42 rear all shimano 11s and it works well.
I suppose that you are using a BTT rear derailleur with an SGS cage, aren´t you?
@@eugeniomiguel1 I don't know what BTT is so probably not?
I'm wondering about this random old shimano and the TX Tourney.. basically.. can I steal the Tourney Cage for the old Short cage from the 90s.. lol.. gonna try it😊
Good luck!
@pedalpowercycling looked into the RD it's a Golden Arrow 105 and I think I'm gonna run it as is until I find a proper long cage
All you had to do was add the hanger extender.
Hv an r6700 rd myself.
Unfortunately only an extender doesn't work for me. There's too much chain slack to a point where the bottom of the chain would swing and rub the rim and tire in certain combinations.
I have used the hanger extender to modify a 2005 TCR to use an 11-32 cassette but I also ran into the same problem that @pedalpowercycling did on 3 or 4 other bikes that I tried to do the same modification where the derailleur couldn't take up the required extra chain length even with the hanger extender. I used an 8 speed MTB derailleur instead of the extender, a 9 speed derailleur worked even better.
Unfortunately for @pedalpowercycling, he has Di2 so he cannot use this solution
i think your chain is too long. your RD is perpendicular on the first cog and way slack on the high gear. opposite should be true
Thank you, the bike works in all gear combinations as is and may even fit an 11-36 cassette. I could shorten it to save a few grams.
Guys, cmon, please, don't clone this shitty information! SS and GS derailleurs differs not only with length of the cage. There is also another parallelogram and slighly another geometry! Because of videos like this now I must find GS version to my customer, because I bought SS and install GS cage to it and thought that I'm smarter than many people. But not! This will work only if you will use under 30t cassetes and with this longer cage maybe you can use triple crankset.
The purpose of this video (in the Intro) was to see if I could install a longer cage onto my short cage rear derailleur. In the video I'm also using a derailleur hanger extender to help my derailleur for an 11-34 cassette.
@@pedalpowercycling hanger extender doesn't extend derailleur parallelogram. And this is very major thing. It will work, but it's not correctly. Many CZcamsrs show this like panacea, when you need GS version and you can't find it, but it's weird method...
@@user-lj8rw3jr1o I understand that but there's no 10 speed ultegra di2 GS rear derailleur. The shifting works well with my setup.
