- Wilco play their song "Impossible Germany" live in concert at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California on October 18, 2021, with Nels Cline playing an epic guitar solo lasting several minutes. Impossible Germany appeared on the band's sixth studio album, Sky Blue Sky (2007).
The song is a favorite of fans and music critics alike. Spin wrote: "The song’s smooth, caressing opening section sets the stage perfectly for Nels Cline’s melancholy yet joyous guitar solo, which rises with the rest of the band until their interplay reaches a heavenly zenith." And Rolling Stone said: "Have Wilco ever come up with a better song than 'Impossible Germany?' For the first three minutes, it’s a mysterious soft-rock ballad with jazzy chords filtered through stoner-country guitar licks, like some lost outtake from Steely Dan’s Katy Lied. Jeff Tweedy mumbles about isolation in his most beaten-up-by-life voice. Then, in the final three minutes, it builds into a twin-guitar epic, with Tweedy in the left speaker reinventing Fleetwood Mac circa Bare Trees, and Nels Cline in the right speaker reinventing Television circa Adventure. . . . It’s peaceful on the surface, demented underneath. . . . Even if mellowed-out guitar jammery isn’t your cup of tea, respect is due - this is the kind of song nobody ever gets right."
Wilco is an alternative rock band from Chicago consisting of Jeff Tweedy (lead vocals and guitar), Nels Cline (guitar), John Stirratt (bass), Glenn Kotche (drums), Mikael Jorgensen (keyboards), and Pat Sansone (guitar and keyboards). Wilco recently wrapped up their It's Time tour, but their most recent dates are the conclusion of the Ode To Joy tour, the last few dates of which were postponed because of the pandemic in March 2020.

Impossible Germany lyrics:
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
Wherever you go
Wherever you land
I'll say what this means to me
I'll do what I can
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
Fundamental problem
All need to face
This is important
But I know you're not listening
No, I know you're not listening
This was still new to me
I wouldn't understand
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
This is what love is for
To be out of place
Gorgeous and alone
Face to face
With no larger problems
That need to be erased
Nothing more important
Than to know someone's listening
Now, I know you'll be listening
Written by Jeff Tweedy / Glenn Kotche / John Stirratt / Mikael Jorgensen / Nels Cline / Pat Sansone

Wilco official bio:
Throughout the past two-plus decades Wilco has won multiple Grammy Awards, released 11 studio albums, as well as a trio of albums with Billy Bragg penning music to lyrics by Woody Guthrie. They have founded their own record label (dBpm Records) and festival (Solid Sound). This year saw them curating Sky Blue Sky, a destination concert experience in Mexico, for the first time. The Chicago sextet continues to be regarded as a live powerhouse, as described by NPR “To see Wilco on stage is to hear the best of the best.” The band’s newest album, Ode To Joy, was released fall 2019.
Wilco return with Ode to Joy, out October 4th via dBpm Records. Ode to Joy comes three-plus years after the release of the “world-weary, wheezy - and wonderfully warm” (The Guardian) Schmilco, and encourages the act of finding joy in a dark political climate. The album presents a unique rhythm track and a minimalist instrumentation, with lyrics at once observant, hopeful, morbid, tolerant, and abstract. “Love is Everywhere (Beware),” the album’s extrospective lead single, is an upbeat, guitar-driven track that explores the dual joy and threat of a community focused on love.
Whether our joy is measured by sparks felt when clutching old sweaters to our chests, by the number of tiny digital hearts earned from a shared photograph, by a guitar solo or a drumbeat or a piece of cotton on a stick in your ear, or by something even greater, Wilco wants to sincerely remind us to wear that feeling loud and proud. This is Ode to Joy: pick it up, hold it tight.

Thanks for watching my video. I gathered all the videos I shot at this concert in a CZcams playlist: czcams.com/play/PLwdc0qZNx0tYLzohIA1ySG1rAF6b-A2Cu.html. The songs are Bright Leaves, Random Name Generator, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Kamera, Laminated Cat, Impossible Germany, Forget The Flowers, Love Is Everywhere, Box Full Of Letters, Born Alone, Jesus Etc., Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm The Man Who Loves You, Poor Places, Reservations, and I'm A Wheel. Enjoy!
I hope that before I die I get to play this song with a band. It would be the highlight of 20 years playing drums on stage.
I've seen them play Impossible Germany seven or eight times and Nels always plays his solo very differently every time. He truly improvises each time and explores and sees where it goes. I love that he's willing to take that risk because although sometimes his solo is "merely" very good, there are times when it goes into the stratosphere and beyond. That's the payoff for taking the risk he takes each time he plays this song.
I've only seen the live versions on youtube but what you say holds true for them. I love the subtle surprises and how the others players respond.

Wilco has a perfect lineup. Every member has their own distinct style, while also knowing when to hold back. I need to see them live soon.
Wilco are easily one of the best bands I've ever seen live.
....and this is the perfect example of why Nels is one of my all-time favourite guitar players.
Nels Cline ... what talent ~!!!!! a joy to listen to.
My youngest daughter who's 21 now grew up listening to this, she never paid it much attention. She now has the most incredible taste in music and I think she loves this.
Had the opportunity to see them live. Unforgettable show.
Great solo. I met Nels Cline once outside before a show in Dublin and he was really genuinely nice to me. Cool guy.
Nels is a Wizard on guitar...
I love Nels' playing and the way the Eagles-reminiscent guitar duet endures while he continues to lose his mind.
Eagles! How dare you.
@@brandonbailey8649 Ha! He's not wrong, though.. Those guitar-monies are so 70s AOR, but in a good way.. It all jives so perfectly!
@@brandonbailey8649 I always though a bit Allman Brothers.
They’re doing Television. Nels is a huge Tom Verlaine fan. RIP TV
heard this on the uc davis fm radio station, this solo was great
Solo is a great balance between sublime virtuosity and losing your head there for a second.
Then the other two guitars unite while Nels goes batshitcrazy. Can watch these live versions forever.
It's always the highlight of the show & always exceeds expectations. 🎸
Thanks for this!
All I can say is WOW! Living in Brooklyn I'm lucky to catch Nels Cline play pretty often and in intimate settings too. I always come away impressed however this performance is in the stratosphere. Thank you so much for posting. You made my night!
Bro completely sent that Jazzy into meltdown mode !!!!!
Don't know how this made it into my feed ... but that was really good. Everyone ...
Saw Tedeschi Trucks at Red Rocks a couple of years ago and they brought out Nels to play the entire second set with them. Unbelievable show
Truly epic!

Glad to have found this video. Really impressed live in Napa 2 nights earlier. Wlico made the right choice by landing this guitarist. Great tone!
Nels is a wonderful guitar player and no, he is not underrated.
Absolute beauty!
Did not disappoint. ♥️

An epic moment ty for sharing
Last gig in Alicante Nels changed completely the solo, and the tune was or almost 8 minutes, and Pat made an incredible back solo to. It's just amazing.
Such a beautiful tone 🎸
I cannot wait to go to Iceland to see them all 3 nights
A Love Song WooF!!🐶
