I restore clocks, and make money doing it. I found most of the techniques shown here to be far below professional standards, and most of the techniques used are antiquated by at least 30 years. This clock was not restored to working condition. It was band-aided to run for awhile, but I would wager it will stop within a year or two. Watch it for entertainment, but not as an example of how clock repair should look.

It just like playing and modding Vostok watch, it won't designed to be accurate or must be handled by clock makers. This kind of clock selling is still can be found in my country, not that expensive. Like repairing my old Honda bike, just kick or bend the case, no worried, it's not a hundred thousand dollar thing. Unlike people who already living in a developed countries, we're here quite common to repair frickin' everything. I'm not even a mechanics, repairman, or even programmer, just a random farmer using internet, yet fixing this or writing an RTOS program is not that heavy task to require super clean surgery-grade room.

I took apart a Howard Miller pendulum clock, about 40 yr old, because it stopped running. A little CZcams research, seemed that dirt on the little wheel axles was probably the problem. Bought an Amazon oil/cleaning kit, took out the movement, cleaned and oiled everything and it’s running great again. No way would I have gotten into the guts of the movement.

Usually around the barrelarbor hole or the centerwheel because these are often not fitted with a ruby. @@dperry428 I subscribe to your channel Don and I'm learning a lot from your videos. I'm a complete novice to the hobby of 'messing about' with clocks and have just started
my first little project, the disassembly and cleaning of a English Smiths Enfield movement mantle clock. I stopped watching this video when he started hammering around the pivot holes. I myself am not at the stage of attempting re-bushing. But even I, at my early stage in the hobby know that anybody who loves clocks would cringe at this. I would rather get someone to do re-bushing for me until I had the equipment to try it for myself. Clocks, especially, old and interesting ones, (not that I think the clock in this video is anything special, but that's beside the point) deserve more respect and care.

On further consideration I have to modify my previous comment and pay my belated respects to the owner of those soiled, worn hands. I believe that he's Asian, working under considerable pressure in a poorly-equipped repair shop in perhaps VietNam, Cambodia, Laos, or perhaps India or China. He has made his own tools (I once made a punch from an engine valve myself) and has applied good repair techniques within the capabilities of his equipment. I am an American with a well-equipped shop, but this man truly deserves those tools.

@@dperry428 You have to be cautious when handling mainsprings, but as with any work involving energy-storage devices (excepting armed explosive devices) it's not all that difficult to accomplish, and the fellow's method is often all that's available. For example, a wind-up phonograph contains two barreled springs, each more than an inch in width and on the order of 16 feet in length. Mainspring winders are not available, though I'll build one if I ever have to fix one of these machines again. As it happened, I had to wind both springs into their barrels by hand, and they were coated with black grease. I strongly recommend a mainspring winding machine for clock work (though even these have their disasters) but there are always multiple ways to do things.

Ok so I've completed step 1, I was able to improve your the efficiency of your method using a hammer. I am unclear as to what to do next as I seem to have a larger number of pieces than you do. Please advise.

A good clock spring would have jumped out of the housing and cut you rather badly, I usually do it in a five gallon bucket with leather welding gloves, they are full of energy just waiting to be released....... I'll give you credit for getting it back together :D

The moment I take that clock apart, it's game over, may have sounded like a good idea at the time, but from past experience, I know I am not that guy. I get that thought it's already broken, i can't break it more... Yes, I actually can.

An honest watch, very cheap but with a much better time than most old European ones. The sound of the bell reminds a bit of a funeral ....

For a pleasant sound, the hammers should barely touch the gong at the very end of their movement.

Sorry to say I can see you are not a clock make. So many things you do can damage the clock more. You head to take of the tension on the springs before dismantling. The way you make the holes for the gears smaller is not ok.Please stop tampering with the mechanisms and keep to the wood work. The hammer is too close to the bell pins. The out side of my clock looks amazing but sounds bad.
My dad was a antique clock maker and he showed me a lot of things about clocks.

I'm just curious as to why he disassembled the entire clock mechanism. 99% of the cleaning could be accomplished without disassembly. I'll assume he was showing off.

Because it wouldn't work instead of bushing it properly he pinged the bushings with a stake ie he pushed the brass back over the worn bit to get the wheels to run true. Won't last 5 minutes.

Excelente trabalho de recuperação. Porém a falta de equipamento como óculos, luvas, sapatos e etc.. faz que seu vídeo fique prejudicado pra população fora do Brasil.
