    Myra was just as bad as Ian. I do feel very sorry for David, though. He was only 16 when Ian started trying to pull him into this. And he didn't realize what was going on soon enough, but at least when he found out that those two nut jobs were killing people he put a stop to it. It ruined his life, but at least he saved the lives of countless other people that would have no doubt been murdered if they had been allowed to continue.

There's no evidence linking him with Lesley or anyone except Edward. But wouldn't Hindley have killed him if he got involved? That might have meant getting close to her man and taking him

    So, there’s a psychological theory called “fleas” which basically means the abusee takes on traits of the abuser as a means to protect themselves. However, if a moral compass isn’t there the proclivity for violence is much more prevalent. So while she may not have been as evil as Ian in the beginning, she had to have had a disposition for psychopathy to do the things she did.

    Thank you for covering this, Stephanie. I am from the UK and this case was ever present when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. I remember reading that after Myra Hindley was convicted, the name Myra virtually vanished from use in the UK when naming girls, such was the disgust about her involvement in these murders. She singlehandedly demolished the notion that children would be safe in the company of women.
    I am actually pleased that Ian Brady’s life was sustained for as long as it was, as it was against his wishes. He was ill for a long time and death would have been an easy way out of his physical suffering. He had wanted to die for years, but the authorities wouldn’t give him that satisfaction and ruled against him. Brady thought he was so clever making out he had paranoid schizophrenia so he would be moved from the harsh conditions of a maximum security prison to an easier life in a secure mental hospital. This worked in his favour until he wanted to end his life when it backfired. He tried to argue he did not in fact have paranoid schizophrenia, but was ruled against, kept in the hospital and force fed food against his wishes.
    He had the gall to whinge about being treated like an animal and having his rights taken away. As a UK taxpayer, I was more than happy for my money to go towards prolonging his agony.
    Similarly, Brady wanted his ashes to be spread over Saddleworth Moor - how sick and such an insult to his victims. Fortunately, the authorities went against his wishes again and he was buried at sea.
    I am with you - there is no way Myra wasn’t wholly involved in all those murders, and I’m glad she spent the rest of her life in prison.
    I always felt sorry for David Smith. He did what he could to stop those two at the first opportunity and if it wasn’t for him, there would be more victims. His story always added up for me and he suffered terribly. I suspect it was partly because he was a bad boy (which doesn’t make you a child murderer) and also because the public could not access Brady and Hindley, so they took out their anger on Smith instead.

    This case has always frustrated me, because Ian was clearly the instigator, but Myra seems to be the one luring the children to their deaths. That is just as bad, as evil, as Ian actually murdering them. But there's this idea that the submissive personality in murder partnerships is somehow less culpable.
    Myra knew what was going on. She understood exactly what Ian was doing to those children. Whether or not she participated shouldn't matter. She helped him find victims. She didn't do anything to stop him. She didn't drop hints or attempt to bring it up in other ways. She actively helped him hide evidence afterward, and was clearly participating in the planning and finding victims.

    “We can’t prosecute them anymore, so there’s no point.” 😳 what?! It’s not about that ! Not for the family. That’s horrible. It’s so bizarre that they would confess to Pauline and John and disclose where their body’s were, but then arbitrarily decide not to do the same for Keith. How does it benefit them to hold back on that one child? No, Myra wasn’t innocent. Was she abused by Ian? Maybe. But she was desperate to have the favor of this evil person, even to the point of participating in child murder. That little detail about her shoes from sam’s murder -no blood inside the shoes, but arterial blood outside-says to me that there’s a good chance she was present for the other murders, too; that and her voice on the Leslie Downey tape. And even if she never personally harmed the kids-I don’t believe that, personally-but even if she didn’t, she was still willing to be the bait that drew these kids in, knowing full well what was going to happen to them when they came with her. That all by itself makes her just as guilty as Ian in my book.

    • @12caelestis
      @12caelestis Před 3 lety +6

      It's something that you come across with concerning frequency - yes, this serial killer murdered X number of people, but we're only going to prosecute them for a. the death penalty victim, b. the victims we think we can definitely win, c. victims we can try to prosecute later if we lose the first attempt. So the victims that don't get prosecuted are still officially classified as unsolved.
      Brady loved the attention & feeling that he knew more than anyone else, which is usually thought to be why he refused to say where Keith Bennett was buried. He had the police take him out onto the moors under the pretence of disclosing more burial sites, but he never gave them any actual locations or usable information.
      No matter what Myra said, there's no way that she wasn't a participant. However, given her possessiveness of Ian when he started to test David & try to indoctrinate him in the same way he had Myra, I wondered if maybe she left him to do certain things himself - kind of a 'shouldn't I be enough' type thing, which in turn could have fuelled her viciousness towards the victims. She certainly was self-centered enough.

I'd like to thank you for being so respectful towards the victims and their families, that's one thing I love about your videos. You clearly research the cases thoroughly and never victim blame. What Brady and Hindley did was horrific, it rocked the nation and we still mourn those children. I hope one day Keith will be found, so that he can be laid to rest with the respect and dignity he deserves. This highlights the stranger danger, that it isn't just unknown men we need to warn our children of. They should have locked those 2 up and left them to die slowly, not fed them and allowed them to reach old age. Why treat them with such humanity when they were so unworthy of it? And asking the guard for makeup *pours salt in her tea* I really really hope they are able to find that little boys body one day. His remaining family deserves to know and I find it reprehensible that they would say finding his body doesn't matter anymore now that the killers are dead.

    • @Woodman-Spare-that-tree
      @Woodman-Spare-that-tree Před 3 lety +11

      I’m in the UK and used to work in the Prison Service for England & Wales. Women’s prisons here are quite soft. The prisoners wear their own clothes, and they have access to hairdressers, nail varnish and make-up. They don’t have cells, they have rooms, and in their rooms they can have a little desk and a bookshelf, a modern private toilet, windows with vertical sections but no bars on them, and the prisoners can have their own pretty duvet covers and curtains and rugs and lots of personal possessions, like a TV and family photos etc. The photo in the video was of the original Holloway prison which was built like a stone castle, but the Government built a new modern Holloway Prison to replace it, which I visited during the 1980s. It was warm and clean inside, with modern plumbing, and it even had tennis courts, gardens for the prisoners to sit in on a sunny day, and a swimming pool. If they prisoners have babies, the babies can live in the prison with their mums. The Government’s reasoning behind all this is that the prisoners’ punishment is that they should lose their liberty, but not their humanity. Personally, I think it’s gone way too far and I would bring back the death penalty.

    There is an amazing film called “Longford” starring Samantha Morton as Myra Hindley, that explores the relationship between Longford and Hindley.
    It’s believed widely that he actually did it because he was infatuated with her and in love with her, (as she had been with Brady). His correspondence and language used wit her in interviews and about her supports this.

    (slightly unrelated: You can still do Slenderman for Harloween: there's a case of two girls who attempted to murder their friend because they thought if they did they could meet Slenderman. Just an idea to mix "creepypasta" and true crime)
    I can't say for sure because I don't know Myra at all, but I think the capacity for such thinking was there. Maybe if she never met Ian she might have just been a cold and distant person. Perhaps a touch cruel and aloof, but not so far as killing kids. I think Ian's influence, the insistence that she throw away her morals made everything worse. However, what does it say about her that she was willing to throw away those morals? Like forget Ian's aversion to marriage (I don't think you should compromise on that even if that's what you truly want), but the basic idea that killing a person, a child, for no reason is okay. I've never been in a headspace where I could fathom such a thing so I'm finding it hard to empathize with this idea. In all truth, I'd rather he kill me than kill someone else while I helped or stood by.

    This case has become a part of the fabric of British criminal history...my grandmother grew up on the same estate as Myra Hindley near Manchester. They were of a similar age and she often talked to me about what it was like when they were caught in the local area. She said to me once that the kind and respectable friends of her parents who wouldn't say boo to a goose went with the crowds to the courthouse and became like feral monsters, who would have torn them to pieces with their bare hands if they could.
    We have never forgotten.

As part of the induction process we had to view several vile films and listen to the Lesley Ann Downey tape. After about two minutes I stuck my fingers in my ears but couldn't drown out the sound so had to run from the room; I wasn't the first one out either. I feel awful for David Smith and his wife. I feel like often times the public demonstrates just as much cruelty as the criminals they are so angry with.
    Regarding Myra, I believe she was every bit as guilty as Ian and chose to commit the murders. I think that there is a high likelihood that Ian was rough with her and somewhat abusive, but that she willingly chose to go participate. I think they both were dangerous and deserved to be locked away. The only place where I disagreed with you in this entire video concerned the end of life care for Brady. I believe that if society stoops to the level of behavior that a criminal displays, that perpetuates an attitude of thinking that can be harmful. It's a complicated issue, because the poor families of those children deserve justice and I certainly don't think he should receive better care than what's available to others. But the idea of treating anyone as less than human makes me feel uncomfortable. I often wonder if I'd feel differently if one of my children were victimized, but it's difficult for me to push myself completely into that headspace.
