  • There has recently been widespread discussion of whether large language models such as LaMDA, ChatGPT, and Bing might be sentient or conscious. Should we take this idea seriously? I will discuss the underlying issue and will break down the strongest reasons for and against.

Not sure why this talk excludes the question of the computability of AI. Put simply if consciousness ( and other cognitive abilities ) are actually non-computable then mere extensions by more programming of existing approaches will be insufficient. Better tools might get produced, but no artificial or scientific answers to consciousness itself.

Personally, my gut feeling tells me we should be more worried about reaching AGI and even more powerful AI systems WITHOUT consciousness, than with consciousness.

Actually, they probably might be able to copy lots of logical operations of thinking processes, but I don't see consciousness' mechanism in them for now.

13:19 I’m not sure I understand this construction “There’s nothing it’s like to be this plastic cup, if not then the plastic cup is not conscious.” Does it mean that if we can’t imagine how it’s like to be something, than that something probably doesn’t have conscious?

No, it means that something is conscoius if and only if there's something it's like to be that thing. There's something it's like to be you, and there's something it's like to be a bat (something it's like to orient through sounds over vision). There's something it's like to be a bat, even if we can't imagine what it's like to be a bat. But if there's nothing it's like to be something, then that something has no consciousness. Whether or not there's something it's like to be a cup is another question. Most would say no; those who think yes are for instance panpsychists. They think that everything is conscious, and so for everything, there is something it's like to be that thing. :)

@@PM-gt9mh what do you mean by 'something it's like to be that thing', can you elaborate more about it?
