The Super Mario Bros. Movie uses something that Netflix’s Castlevania ironically uses: anti-narrative. Explanations aren’t used for world building as they’re mostly left for the audience to recognize rather than learn about again, magic explanation and character closure is not the priority compared to other stories in the classic narrative format, and the plot tend to be straightforward in favor of the character dynamics and development as they are the focus rather than confronting the big baddie, with the finale actually working better that way since you’ll be rooting for the characters more since you got to know them with a few scenes with the villain to make sure there’s emotions on both sides. It works for video game fans as they already know those characters and can get something new with these types of movies because the filmmakers can trust the audience with their pre existing knowledge. That works for Detective Pikachu too because the main audience already knows what Pokémon are and what they can do, so we can focus on the main conflict more instead. But it doesn’t work for critics because they need to know why the action is happening since they often don’t look at the source material. But it still works for audiences as the risk of anti-narratives work for video game movies as they trust the audience will know what’s happening due to their love of the franchise.

45:44 - Before, I was just sad and sympathetic to Julia Sawalha for her being dismissed and recast like that, but finding out she actually went out of her way to perform her old lines just to get back at them - and still sounds almost exactly the same (and way better than the new actress) - made my respect for her go up tenfold.
Not to mention she sounds younger, while the new actress honestly sounds older. Which is ironic, since they said that Julia was "too old" for the role 😂

Just one thing about Chicken Run, although I do agree with the vast majority of points.
Ginger didn't know the chickens she could have helped were going to Mrs Tweedy. I'm sure she would have taken action sooner if she did.

I personally think Dawn of the Nugget could have giving Mrs Tweedy a flashback explanation on how did she survive that gat crashed and how she did dumps her original husband. Look, i can understand why Willard Tweedy is not in the movie because his voice actor, Tony Haygarth has passed away in 2017. But maybe, at least get someone who sounds close enough.
One thing that would have at least help is not put her in the trailer at all
I saw Across the Spiderverse in theaters and loved it! (I did have nervousness going into the film since I thought maybe the project would be too ambitious and become muddled). I especially loved Leo since the titular character reminded me a lot of Mr Rogers especially the songs!

that example that he used about pulling powers out of nowhere being using his fur to create clones of himself, that's in the original story. doesn't save him from being unlikeable. i wish he could have been more like the book version. because his whole character is basically how he is in the beginning of the book, but they never get to his character development

I understand not liking Sun Wukong in the movie. I'm just pointing this out so Journey To The West fans don't raid your comments with the same comments. Sun Wukong's behavior in this movie is accurate to the book it's a loose adaptation of, because Sun Wukong started off as an asshole in Journey to The West and went through character development.
While I see your point, I really don’t think that sort of characterisation works for this movie, it did in the book because it started off with him as an selfish monkey, but the journey forced him to confront his flaws and change. The movie supposedly wants to give Monkey King a jerk-to-hero arc, but fails miserably, because of his obnoxious, smug, arrogant personality, with no redeeming qualities or any semblance of caring for anyone, who uses his tragic backstory as justification for it, and doesn’t learn to stop or go through any meaningful change. But what absolutely drives me up the wall, is how the ending tries to play off Monkey King as suddenly a humble nice guy to Lin before being sealed away, but the fact that he was such an asshole to her all movie makes it feel hallow and saccharine, and two, when 5000 years pass, Monkey King doesn’t even ask what’s happened to her and just goes off with the Journey To The West plot line! WTF!

I don't have an opinion as to which version is better, but one thing I will praise about Nimona is how the film essentially has a very different plot, while keeping the themes, characterisations and specific moments almost exactly the same.
To be fair though, before he achieves nirvana, the monkey king is a total douche. He's barely a hero. Which tbh makes the film kinda accurate
Nimona is my favorite animated movie of 2023 and of all time. The original book is really great as well.
I just feel really bad for Wish tbh.

the reception towards Wish might've made Disney reschedule it to next year, or maybe they aren't going to bother announcing anything else for it for the foreseeable future

As much as I personally enjoyed Chicken Run 2, I’m a little disappointed that Mrs. Tweedy didn’t die. I used to find her supposed death in the first film funny as a kid.

Okay I just wanna add that you are wrong about Chicken run 2. You can’t say they ruined Ginger’s character in the sequel because she has PTSD. You think that people who have PTSD would want to come back to war because they’re brave? No? No one wants to go back to the what caused their trauma in the first place. It makes perfect sense why Ginger is scared to save chickens from other farms because she went through hell in the last movie and she doesn’t want to go through it because she finally found freedom and doesn’t want to put her freedom at risk. Plus, she’s a mother now. There’s a saying that a mother puts her child first than anything else. Yes, the story isn’t nothing new but I see this movie as an epilogue movie to the first film. And yes, it’s not as darker as the first film but the film is heartwarming with the family dynamic between Ginger and her daughter and husband. Like, Chicken run 2 made me appreciate my late mother. And you saying that they ruined Ginger’s character because she was afraid means that you don’t care nor sympathize with people with PTSD
I, personally enjoyed the Super Mario Movie. In my opinion, this has to be Jack Black's best role in any film. Each character seemed just like how we'd imagine them in the games and the references made me very happy. Also, Peaches should've won an award, change my mind
33:23 The worst part of Mon El twist in Legion of Super Heroes is that is complete uncessary since the Legion already has members who became or reveal themselves as villains in the comics. The best exemple is Earth Man and the Justice League of Earth, who are group of meta humans who hate the Legion because they reject them. Since the film already focus on the Legion's weird members and is about Kara feeling like outcast and trying to find her place, the JLE would had been the perfect contrast, since Kara and her friends would fighting against villains who reflect what they could become if they choose a dark path.

The real reason Julia Sawalha wasn't asked to reprise her role as Ginger in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget was to appease Mel Gibson's ego. It's a shame because Julia Sawalha was phenomenal as Ginger.

To be clear, I think Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a great movie and I'm glad people are giving it the respect it deserves. And thank God for CinemaWins for making a postive video on Ruby Gillman. I just felt awful about the movie's box-office and I blame Universal for that. At least the movie became a hit on Netflix.
I think it's rather unfair that the movie gets a few negatives rather than positives and that rubs me the wrong way. Still, I think Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken deserves more love and more attention. At least it has a varitey of fans.

Interesting list, despite I’ve only head of maybe 5 lol. I actually have only seen Elemental, and I was pretty impressed to see it so high. I really do enjoy the romance between Ember and Wade and how its a lot more realistic and mature than Disney normally goes. My main cons with the movie is the character design (specifically ones like air and some of the fire characters look straight up creepy) and the world building could’ve been a little better. I definitely wouldn’t mind if this one got a sequel, considering Ember and Wade actually do have a steam child in the very last minute after the credits. I haven’t seen Wish yet, despite I’ve heard so many negative reviews on it. All I’m gonna say is it was a HUGE missed opportunity to make the shelved project The Search For Mickey Mouse, which was originally a sequel for the Great Mouse Detective. It was about different characters from almost every Disney movie coming together to find Mickey and could’ve been served as a metaphor to show how the company has decayed into a money making mega corporation that doesn’t care about art and storytelling anymore. And I find it very fitting, considering Mickey Mouse himself doesn’t actually have a movie about HIM, only shorts and Fantasia. Maybe do a video about the short Once Upon a Studio, your favorite parts and how it was so much better than Wish?
As for Wish, I find this movie such a disappointment, especially as an anniversary movie. I think it had waay too many Easter eggs to basically rely on other Disney movies to keep audiences’s attention, especially kids. And I feel Asha is a bit of a selfish brat, considering how the movie ended with her having the ability to grant any wish she wants without any limitations. She basically learns NOTHING. As for the villain, Magnifico isn’t awful, BUT I am so disappointed Amaya wasn’t a villain too, considering the original plot for the movie. Same for Star being a love interest for Asha, so disappointed they scrapped that idea too. Instead, girls aren’t allowed to fall in love anymore because “love is a weakness” and the side characters are ok, except Valentino. I’m sorry but once he is able to start talking, I just wanted him to shut up. Animal characters like Hei Hei are so much better BECAUSE they’re consistent the entire movie as a dumb rooster that doesn’t talk

Also how is asha selfish when she wants people to work towards their own goals. She doesn't grant every wish at the end. She becomes a fairy godmother. How is the king a good man if he makes people dependent on him and twists words on every wish.
But i will say i think the reason they can't do the search for mickey is for the same reasons they cant put house of mouse on disney plus. To many copyrights. Also goofy is i think the only one with a real movie. Why doesn't mickey donald or even minnie have one

As someone who's both a DC. fan and a Scooby-Doo fan, I'm embarrassed to say that I completely missed the joke where the Daily Planet employees fail to recognise Velma without her glasses.
Me: At least you actually review Trolls Band Together correctly and you also find Trolls World Tour the best of the 3 movies like me ( nothing can beat Dreamworks Infinity War ( My Espeon ( Sofia ): And its at least a trolltastic step up from Avengers which is actually just as unnecessary as Chicken Run 2. Which when we do watch it. My trainer is gonna smash that evil manufactured abomination that is more deserving for the Animat seal of garbage compared to Trolls Band Together. At least that do something engaging and even extended the dreamworks Trolls lore though ether way... this chicken run feast is spoiled and unnecessary and will make you throw up her boobies )

I completely agree. I was so bored while watching it. Lucky, there were way better movies this year in my opinion.
Granted with an open mindset, i could tell you were disappointed with Dawn of the Nugget.
as for the rest of the ranking, most of 2023 has its highs and lows, like every other animated film, but they vary by preference and recommending, which are worth a watch for addressing criticism and judgement.
For 2024, we've got more streamed films from Netflix, and unfortunately for this year, there's not a single animated feature film from Warner Bros (for literal reasons)
but it was actually back in 2023, and there's been countless reports on Coyote vs ACME, which is currently unknown if it planned for release.
I think you're way too mad at the Monkey King. It deserves to be at least above Wish in my opinion, but definitely doesn't deserve to be second worst. Not even close.

Out of all the 2023 animated movies I managed to see in 2023, there were only two movies I outright disliked.
'Mummies' exceeded my unremarkable expectations & I hated 'The Monkey King' with a burning passion, to the point where I strongly recommend LEGO Monkie Kid & American Born Chinese as alternatives.
37:29 - It is your personal opinion, but I actually liked Wish. Is is it Disney's finest? No, but I did enjoyed it and it didn't feel like Disney's vanity project because I actually watched all of the Disney Animated Canon films, including The Black Cauldron though I haven't seen Home on the Range and Chicken Little, and even played Epic Mickey. I also thought the songs were really nice, though it all comes to your personal opinion. When I read The Art of Wish, there is one sentence that stood out to me: 'What we are selling isn't escapism, but reassurance.' This is what Wish brings. Reassurance.
40:05 - About Ruby, I really feel pity to the film as if it gotten time, it would be then comparable to The Fox and the Hound and even Ernest and Celestine.
I liked it, too. It may not be Disney’s greatest film, but it’s still enjoyable.

The most overused criticism of 2023 was "It feels like it was generated by AI" because it was the year AI went mainstream, a fair amount of generic content got made, and one of the main reasons why the strikes happened is because of the AI going mainstream, which made it ironic whenever things were actually generated by AI. On a separate note, I refuse to believe that King Magnifico was ever a villain because I wouldn't want to live in a world where Hitler and Stalin could have anything they wanted by just asking for them.
A lot of people keep saying he's a not villain, but he's acting exactly like a politician. And besides, he's not even letting people work towards their own goals, how is that a good thing they've become dependent on him on the chance Maybe he'll grant their wish. Honest.
Ly it feels like like the movie goes back to early early. Disney, where there is nothing but questions and plot holes.

Under the boardwalk, to me, was bad. It's Romeo and Juliet with hermit crabs and pop songs, that's it! Nothing is interresting, cute or funny except the relation between the big crab and Ramona's sister. It was the ONLY thing that i liked and the animation is pretty. Not enough to make a good movie. Also, the movie is a musical and none of the songs were memorables. Nice job producers 😂
