FUN FACT ABOUT THIS SONG it's actually a poem that originated from a young boy that killed his first person. He was in such shock about what he's done and his mother was very proud of him. when he was 10 and his mother was proud of him telling him that in stead of putting him under house arrest, the village should buy him a Viking raiding ship right then and there and send him out to show them how its done. So the song explains that since he killed a man (hue many foe-men), he'd grow up as a warrior within the shieldwall with his brothers and sisters in arms. He'd saild to distant shores on his galley, which is a type of boat/ship used at that time. All the variations of the same repeated lines-just amazing! The staggered words and the vocals being passed around, something new to hear every time I listen.
A younger Geoff with his short hair was adorkable. A more mature Geoff with a longer mane is a purdy boi, even when he's playing a villain or a demon. I have to say, though, if I heard that note/sound coming toward me on a dark night, I'd think Gabriel was announcing judgment day, and I would not stick around.

The costumes and makeup are so good! Layne is looking awesome with that intricate face tattoo, and Geoff looks (and sounds) like some underworld god. Overtones and subharmonics are two different things, bro. And Geoff is only doing the subharmonics. Overtones are inherent part of music itself and are in every note produced no matter the instrument.

2:34 is my absolute favorite. So effortlessly as Geoff glides from normal bass to the subharmonic war horn in the same word.
I love the entire band to pieces....but bass gets me....Geoff makes me have chills every time he displays this depth.

It's a form of Norse poem attributed to Egill Skallgrímsson, who was likely born in 910 AD in Iceland, although the exact year is unknown. It is said he he composed it after slaying his first man at the age of 7, but i'm guessing there may be some slight exaggeration there :)
The poem is then recorded by Snorri Sturluson in "Egils Saga", but the oldest surviving manuscripts are from the 1700's. We'll likely never know the true facts, but it is very cool to see and hear my heritage being sung by this amazing group. Well done Voiceplay.
How do you pronounce the first letter that looks like a P? I have an Icelandic song in my playlist starts with it as well. Sounds like an English th but i could be wrong 🤔. My phone placed it behind the Z-songs alphabetical wise
@@Taostbrotesserin Yeah a "th" sound is close to it but it needs to be a much firmer sound. Put the emphasis on the very first sound and amplify it a bit. That should get you close to it

@@Taostbrotesserin I wouldn't say so. They did get popular with kids in the months after Eurovision but have mostly disappeared since then. They were pretty unknown before Eurovision as well.

We all come for Jeff and stay for Eli. They both stand out really big on this track. They are all great on this and bring a new life to this song. Still gets me with that viking war horn that is Jeff

The more I watch this, the more I love it. Wow. And chills at 2:14 every time. That energy! Eli really rocked this one, and his movements were so weirdly captivating. The trip-hop sound is fantastic as well. So hypnotic.

VoicePlay and Geoff usually have good subtitling, it's something they have gotten better at over the years as they have some family members with hearing loss, so they know how important it is to some people. 🙂 Geoff has made a video about his wife's hearing loss on his solo channel.

Ever since I dicovered Geoff Castellucci just a couple of months age and soon thereafter Voiceplay I have been both amazed and mesmerized by Geoff's vocal talent, but the low note in this one takes the cake, I mean the fact that he can hold a low note that vibrate in a way that it can loosen up a locked joint between my shoulder blades, that is just absolutely mind blowing 🤯😍

You know what the funny thing is with voiceplay? With some vocal groups there is like this guy is fenomenal, that woman is also very good and the rest is okay. Not with voiceplay. Every. single. one. of you guys are fenomenal.

With all due respect to Van Canto, this is the most metal acapella song you will ever hear. As is always the case with Voiceplay, everyone knocks it out of the park, but Eli and Geoff are unreal. Geoff's voice has so much menace and Eli sounds ready to rip someone's head off. Never heard him that intense! Valhallacapella perhaps?

I love everything about this, from the intricate, incredible harmonies, to the powerful percussion, to the costumes and makeup, to the gorgeous backgrounds. You all look very intimidating, but Eli managed to look downright terrifying with those facial expressions! 😮 Jose was a wonderful addition and blended so well with all of you. They do look just like that on first glance, yeah. But on a second thought, and as someone used to high fantasy games... What if Eli is actually a sorcerer who just decided to summon a demon for the raid? You know the situation, the demon seems to be the bigger threat and naturally draws attention... but its really the sorcerer that will wreck you. ;)

This is what I wanted Pentatonix to be. I mean, no hate on them, They've inspired a lot of people to follow in their wake, but I always feel like they over-sing the songs they cover, and a lot pf people like that so keep on keeping on... They're doing fine without my fandom, and I don't want to be that one voice of dissent in a thousand that is the only one that gets heard. As an artist, it's always the negative that stands out, even when it's the minority.
But this... This is how I want it to sound. This is what does it for me.

I commented on the patron release, but hearing this again, I had to come back and talk about how much I love it. I did not know the song and wasn't sure what to think before seeing it. Now I just keep rewatching. It is so satisfying.
I love the dark tone, the attitude, and the haunting mood. Geoff looks like a forge god, Layne and J like berserkers, and Eli like a necromancer.
They were all so good, but I have to comment on Eli's rock voice. When it comes out, it blows me away every time! Geoff, of course, is a wonder. J is so smooth. Jose fit in very well with everyone's skill and sound. And Layne killed the percussion, which is not a surprise. What was a spectacular surprise was his solo singing! I am always a fan when he sings.

I love how distinct and wonderfully harmonized they are with each other. It's simply a treat to the ears. i know most like the high or low bass notes. But I enjoy melody and harmonization the most I can't help my self. Just how well there voices layer with out one standing out and how seamlessly they work together and know exactly when to give someone else the spot light.
The terrific thing about this song is that the sophisticated voice notes/chords were incredibly and completely enjoyable.

I'm sure you probably have, but if you haven't, check out Home Free and Pentatonix, too. These three groups are kind of the Holy Trinity of a capella. They also have the Holy Trinity of bass singers. (At least before Avi left PTX.)
