  • Live, television: It's The Beatles
    3.45pm, Saturday 7 December 1963
Following their appearance on the BBC television show Juke Box Jury, The Beatles recorded a special concert appearance for the corporation at Liverpool's Empire Theatre.
The performance took place in front of 2,500 members of The Beatles' Northern Area Fan Club, between 3.45 and 4.30pm. It was filmed in its entirety by the BBC, and 30 minutes were broadcast that evening from 8.10pm to 8.40pm during a special programme entitled It's The Beatles.
The group played a short version of From Me To You, followed by I Saw Her Standing There, All My Loving, Roll Over Beethoven, Boys, Till There Was You, She Loves You, This Boy, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Money (That's What I Want), Twist And Shout, and another version of From Me To You.
Technical problems and lack of rehearsal times meant the sound balance for the concert recording was sub-standard. Both The Beatles and senior figures at the BBC later expressed concern at the often embarrassing nature of the footage, which included the absence of Ringo vocals during Boys and the director focusing on the wrong members of the group during key moments.
After the concert the BBC also recorded a two-minute interview with the group to use on the Christmas Day edition of Top Of The Pops.
The Beatles then made the short journey to the nearby Odeon Cinema on London Road where they gave two evening concerts. The police closed Pudsey Street to the public to allow the group to reach the venue unhindered.

The Beatles left us hungry when they called it a day, but then again passed the torch to a new generation of fabulous bands and artists very much inspired by them. There's a lot of gold in their footsteps, but no matter how much I adore my Floyd, Zeppelin, Yes or David Bowie (and many more really great names even in today's music).....The Beatles is always there somehow.
They haven't played together for more than half a century and still we're talking about them. Still they gain new and very young fans.
That's insane. But that's how bloody great there were.
      Period!
      Surpassing The Beatles?
No, I don't think there is any such thing.
The world will never see a band like that ever again.

I read in the book Outliers that In 1960, when the Beatles were still a high school rock band, they were given the chance to travel to Hamburg, Germany and play in various strip clubs. The Beatles were contracted to play for hours every night, seven nights a week, and thereby were forced to develop as musicians. After a year and a half, they had performed 270 nights. By 1964, when they first found commercial success, they had performed an estimated twelve hundred times-more than most band bands do in an entire career.

@David Mahady Yeah, but 1989 is not approximately close to 1980. As for your point, his only real post-Beatles hits were Imagine, though I don't think that was a big seller when it came out, Power to the People, Whatever Gets You Through the Night with Elton John, who was dominating the charts, and he wrote a little bit of Fame by David Bowie. His last 70s album of original material didn't produce anything notable. He had a baby and basically retired until making a comeback in 1980 and promptly getting shot. I don't think he was at all a confident songwriter between 1975 and 1980, and those homemade recordings were not meant for release.

Hard to believe, those in the audience are all in their 70’s +.

No other band had power over the audience like the Beatles. I was born early 70s and remember listening to the Beatles and still till this day consider them to be the greatest band ever.

Paul was my first love at age 3, from the moment I saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Seeing Paul in concert 3 years ago was surreal.

The best ever. Often imitated, never duplicated. They came they conquered and they left their mark on this world forever. There isn’t anyone that doesn’t look up to The Beatles.

I love how the Mum/Granny was so equally enthusiastic about the music. I think there might have been a Dad or three out in the pews as well, all these lovely people accompanying their teens.
My boyfriend's neice recently went to see that Korean boy band and my bf went with her. His mom was actually almost as excited as the teen!

Their tightness as a band from the years of playing the Cavern Club in Liverpool and the clubs in Hamburg is quite evident. It's funny how the Stones got portrayed as street toughs to the public and the Beatles as cheery middle-class guys. The reality was exactly the opposite. For Chrissakes, Mick Jagger was an accounting major at the London School of Economics ! It was the Beatles' savvy manager, Brian Epstein, who got them out of the black leather and into suits to polish them for mass consumption. But they remained as witty and bonded as ever. This is a wonderful clip.

***** Mick was middle class, but Keith was working class (read his book). John, the "working class hero," was the only Beatle who grew up in a middle class home. Of course, it wasn't his parents' home. His father was a working class Catholic who had abandoned him and was away working on ships. Paul's mother died when he was 14, and his family lived in a small council house, a form of public housing. George's father was a bus driver; Ringo grew up in an especially rough part of Liverpool, called the Dingle.

+Williwo Man Maybe paul and john were lower middle class, but ringo and george certainly weren't. They were totally working class. I think george said even just when they were in hamburg he was already earning twice as much as his dad or something.

So very thankful I lived through those years! There has never been a band that compares to The Beatles, not before or after them. Their individual gifts & talents were amazing & the band together was awesome! Still my all time favorite band! ❤️
