My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

What do you think the rules for chords and comping should be? 🙂
Joe Pass was right: Play Simple chords and learn how to use them!
czcams.com/video/P-P-gM7VJx4/video.html
Just listen to Joe Pass accompanying Ella Fitzgerald or Oscar Peterson - he plays the perfect combination of rhythm, chords, flow and never tries to upstage, just supports and lets them shine, not getting in their way.
Exactly!
The GOAT
Its so wonderful how these great Masters honor Joe Pass...and yes Joe was just a great chap.
I played my first jazz jam recently, where I mostly 'comped' for the soloist using these 2 and 3 note 'shell voicing' chords, and it worked out great. I listened carefully to the drums rhythm, and I got smiles from these experienced players. A great video. Thanks, Jens😊
BTW, Ive had some really good guitarists and teachers recommend your videos 😊
Love the premiers. Anticipation of learning something new is motivating.
Thank you, Thomas!
This is a masterclass in 10 minutes. Thanks for making comping easy. A guitar player could use this approach for the next 10 years and still sound fresh.
You're very welcome! Glad you like it 🙂
Thanks for the extended lesson on comping and chords. Great stuff, thank you!
Funny that this video came up, was at a jam last night and my comping was definitely my weak spot.
You got this!
Same here
Very solid and easy-to-understand lesson. My vocabulary just got bigger. The last two sections are fabulous!
Great lesson for me.
Thank you for your share.
Glad you liked it!
Nicely done! I love the info and production!
Thank you Mark!
Man you just opened my eyes,l don't even think l will master this 100 percent but hey l feel lm going far with this in comping!!.Looking forward into putting this into serious practice
Masterclass, Mr Larsen. Thanks a lot.
Another excellent video Jens, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely! Lot times we're concerned about the quantity of chords we know, but I agree. It's how we use these chords in the music.
Exactly! 👍
Excellent vid. Thanks, Jens.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Jens, keep them coming!
Thank you! Will do!
Wow, I really liked the part where you used the shell voicing followed by the triad/ drop 2 voicing fills. Brilliant. It makes you think...
Wow! Thanks Jens
My pleasure!
I'm not a guitar player. I play upright bass. Yet your channel is the most instructive and useful to me. Many thanks!
lovely stuff... thanx Jen's
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Jens - great video. I like how you blur the lines between blues & jazz with (relatively) straightforward voicings...
Glad it was useful! 🙂
Nice class! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Great lesson Jens
Thank you 🙂
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome tutorial. I bought one of your books.
Question - I have a Ibanez some kind similar to your model. Can you recommend a brand/model humbucker to replace the factory ones ( willing to improve its current jazz output sound ) Thanks
Back to some basics - way to go Lars - its perfecto
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Thank you Tom!
Yes, incredibly great rules❤🔥🎸
Thank you! 🙂
Not to start a debate or any such thing
It's an incredibly lovely feeling to comp a great soloist, and it is of course equally fun to play the solo. But there's a magic vibe in just listening and keeping the rhythmic flow going. And as a fun side note the soloist usually put in one or two "easter eggs" we all can have a laugh at.
Nice ... although I tend to fall apart at the turnarounds and the V.
A Master teacher. He walks the talk.
Great video Jens! But, as I'm working through it, I think there's a mistake in the tab/notation around 10m25s for the second half of the bar on the Eb7.
Thanks! Is that where I should have put a parenthesis around the last notes in the bar? I think I did see that in the premiere, but not sure if it was there
@@JensLarsen Sorry - got the time wrong. I meant 7:25, and it's the Eb in the second bar. The tab says xx6558 but your fingers say xx5668
This is exactly how I teach this.
Thanks
Thank you so much for the support! Glad you like the video! 🙏
Hell yeahhh

Shell voicings are the only chord voicings I know because I learned them on bass guitar (and I've only got four strings), so it's nice to see how far you can get from shell voicings alone. Also, it pains me when you throw in those walking bass lines because I'm jealous you're a better jazz bassist on guitar than I am on an actual bass, haha--now if you'll excuse me, I should really go do something about that and practice walking over some chord changes...
Thank you! Did you check out this: czcams.com/video/cNblxzAk8t0/video.htmlsi=jLqgUMF-aXlneozu
Jens is classic for me now
RANDY JUDAH TORRE 💙 <
I liked this one fantastic insight now i have my practice cut out for me at first its a challenge but it gets easier as i practice and go over and over it again and again 😂Thanks Jens. 👍
What your playing and what is written is different at 7:23.
❤
Thanks for the video, may I ask you a question ?
Glad you like it! That would depend on what you want to ask I guess?
@@JensLarsen if I simply arpeggio these chords from the bass to the soprano voicings what kind of sound will I produce ? I mean the genre, jazz, bebop or etc ? Chords : Fm add(9), Fm6/9, Dbmaj7, F7sus2/D#(without C)
@@brokenheartsradio2568 The notes are not enough to define a genre. That is more about melody, rhythm and phrasing. Take the pentatonic scale: It can sound like Blues, heavy metal, folk music but each of those styles sound different ecen thought they mostly use the same scale.
@@JensLarsen I heard this in a song, may you checked it out ?
Reminds me of Jimmy Bruno “Don’t play all that *$&*$-ing *$&(, just play the &($*-ing chords!”
Thank you 😁
Why do jazz chords sound so smug and self satisfied? I never feel comfortable around any jazz chords because of the soul crumpling unease I feel around them.
You lost me wit “rules”
What’s the deal with these premiers? You post a video and I try to watch it and I can’t? Do you think I’m going to breathlessly wait around until your video starts and then watch it? Hell no. But I’m going to do is mark you off my list forever so I don’t waste time when you again like I did just now. Good luck making millions on CZcams. Geez
I think you threatened to do that 3 times already? 🙂
You should show up and join the chat at a premiere, it is a lot of fun!
Has anyone ever made a million playing jazz?
@@RobKandell I guess that depends a bit on what you call Jazz? But I think there are a few.
@@JensLarsen - Fair enough. :-)
@@RobKandell It's probably better if I leave it at that 😂
Helpful, i like the bit with the Bach or whoever "dont be a slave to voice leading" the groove is in the simplicity.
