    In this video, we’re going to talk about some of the side effects of too much iron. In the United States, many pastas, breads, and cereals go through a process of iron fortification.
    A diet high in fortified grains can often lead to a very high iron intake. Too much iron can have negative implications on your health.
    Iron is attracted to damaged tissues of the brain, nerve, eye, liver, and heart. If you have insulin resistance or any issues with damaged tissues, iron targets these tissues and oxidizes them. It can also oxidize the fat layer around your brain and nervous system.
    Metals like iron accumulate in the body, and you don’t have the ability to remove them. Your body can only get rid of 1.2 mg of excess iron per day. Many iron supplements contain a copious amount of iron, but you only need 8 mg of iron per day to prevent a deficiency.
    All microbes need iron to survive-both good bacteria and pathogens need iron. Probiotics are incredibly efficient in regulating excess iron. The good bacteria in your gut utilizes excess iron in your body.
    The best way to rid your body of excess iron is through a process called chelation-binding with a metal or mineral to remove it from the body.
    Phytic acid is one of the best chelators. IP-6(inositol hexaphosphate) is a potent antioxidant that combines phytic acid and the B-vitamin inositol. IP-6 is an amazing chelator that inhibits the oxidative effects of iron. Dietary sources of phytic acid include vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

    I was iron deficient as of recently. I've been eating keto for awhile now and started to feel massive fatigue, so much so that I couldn't get off the couch. My diet consist of bullet proof coffee in the a.m. and cauliflower everyday with other low glycemic veggies and hardly any meat (not because I'm against it, I was just too busy, or tired to cook). I started eating fatty meats and in just a couple days feel normal again.

      Yes, remember that you are fat adapted so your body needs the fat for energy. You should try to eat fatty meat to get the iron & vitamins that your body needs even when you feel too tired.

      Is the same for my brother. He is now 65. He was told that some people just don’t absorb iron after 60. He takes a supplement his doctor gave him.

      water2wine1 That's good he figured it out, i had no idea what was going on. Then someone suggested iron deficiency and I took one 27mg pill and literally a few hours after absorption I made 180 degree turn.

    Here is another problem that my doctors have been aware of and could or would not tell me how to address it. They have told me for years that I had high amounts of iron in my blood. I would ask what problems that could cause. Usually, the answer was along the lines of, "oh, it's not causing any problems now." When I asked how to reduce the amount of iron in my blood, they never gave me any answer at all. As usual, I find a simple solution in one of Dr. Berg's videos.

      @@Drberg Thank you! I am making great progress toward being well with your help. After about 8 weeks of keto and IF my blood glucose levels are now consistently in the low pre-diabetic level or high normal level when tested morning fasting, even with dawn phenomenon (that is down from the 7.4 mmol/l result that triggered my quest to get better) . Through the rest of the day solidly in the normal range including after meals. I have dropped 10 kilos and still reducing - 10 kilos to go to my ideal weight. Blood pressure is down. Increased energy, many other problems are clearing up including what I thought was incipient arthritis. After three days of "keto flu" and cravings I started feeling well and consistently felt satiated. Quickly transitioned to 18/6. Started to find it difficult to ingest two meals in that window and just slid into OMAD. Feeling great and looking forward to more progress. Can't wait for my next physical exam and blood work. I ordered some inositol hexaphosphate right after seeing this video and look forward to clearing the excess iron up. Very grateful for your clear, concise and sensible guidance.

      @@dustington1 Hemochromatosis is a genetic mutation which causes the body to store excess iron. It cannot be reversed by cabbage. Please be careful recommending remedies because you "read it somewhere". The treatment is the removal of blood periodically, to cause the body to pull iron out of the organs where it is accumulated in Hemochromatosis, to make up for the iron lost in the removed blood. This process can take years and many blood draws to complete.

    Thank you so much for addressing this. So many doctors just give iron supplements when they suspect anemia from symptoms. I take a small amount of inositol. I had no idea it helps with iron oxidation. I thought the only solution was a phlebotomy.

      That’s what brought me here to. I had lie iron but just a bit low. Doctor ordered iron supplements everyday. After 3 weeks I just felt like total crap. Nausea, serious constipation, weird pains throughout my body. Headaches in the back of my head. I didn’t tie it to the iron until I went to the doctor again and had to declare that I felt something was seriously wrong with me. He said “ let’s stop the iron”.

    I have hemochromotosis. Can you make a video on this and other cures. The IP6 works well with curcumin. I went from 2700 down to 100 in 9 months of weekly venesection. The fatigue along with pain in muscles and joints makes life difficult. But every time I go to hospital I see a lot of people worse off than me...

    I suspect I got cramps in my legs when someone made my cast iron frying pan rusty in 2002 until now. It is better now. My TCM doctor from China told me cast iron is not good and if it is rusty to absolutely not use it. I gor rid of all the cast iron pans and I bought many more in glass that can be used on stove top. Vintage ones from Ebay - Vision Corning glass skillet, glass pots for stove top. They are the best. I use only glass now, almost.

      I agree you should've either thrown away your rusty cast Fe or had it treated. My parents generation -- the greatest generation -- mainly cooked with cast Fe and their life span will out do us. Cast Fe skillets must be treated, which is ignored now by most. Cornbread must be cooked in a cast Fe skillet.

Today I discussed my high iron level with my chiropractor and she muscle tested me with the IP6 and she said it works for me! You are such a good doctor!     Dr. Berg talks about not getting too much iron, but his nutritional yeast tablets have 20 mg of iron per serving which is over 100% of the daily value, which seems it would give people too much iron, because people would still be getting iron from food they eat as well, not just the tablets

      You don't absorb all the iron you ingest, also you'd want to choose supplements with iron if you have a deficiency, and avoid them if you have an excess of iron

    People don't understand that an excess of iron can present as anemia and lead people down the rabbit hole of high risk for liver cancer, diabetes and arthritis. They do not know to look for a bronzed tan, dotted nails, fatigue or no symptoms at all.

I'll save you the time of looking at the video and let you in on the secret, the United States is ranked 120th out of 125 tested countries, we made the bottom 5 of the list with countries such as Suadi Arabia, and several African countries. America wants us sick and dying so we have to pay to stay alive.

    In Vermont, iron can be in large amounts in the water. When water is tested we are told it won't hurt us but will damage plumbing. People therefore can often disregard the problem.

      I have a filter fitted to the side of my house. Every few months we put a big 50kg bag of salt in it, and every drop of water that comes into my house is filtered through this unit. Primarily I bought it because our water is very hard and it had quite a marked smell of chlorine making it unpleasant to drink. A side effect of our town water
      being so hard was the damage it caused to our plumbing and washing machine, expensive to repair/replace these days. The filter I bought is known as a water softener - I’m not in the US so I’m not sure if it’s called the same where you live. One unexpected bonus from it, our glass/tiles in the shower have no buildup so, no need for Chemicals and scrubbing . We got our water tested x 3 and it’s clear as crystal. I highly recommend it.

    Great video Dr Berg. Thanks for all the great info. I was hoping some day could you do a video on people with hemochromatosis and a diet that suits. I have problems with massive iron overload so get a Phlebotomy every few weeks to keep ferritin down. I'm also on a vegan diet. Thank you and much appreciation from ireland 🇮🇪 🙏 ❤

      Please check what your grains are fortified with in Ireland. Someone said that folic acid is also added to milk in Ireland? Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Unmetabolized folic acid can cause major health problems...it would appear to be even more so in those inclined to iron overload. Food fortification intiatives are largely funded by Gates foundation. WHO supplied free of charge to Africa menadione this is the synthetic form of vitamin k. This vitamin k3 also known as menadione is scientifically documented to cause major problems. CDC added folic acid to prenatal vitamins in 1991. Then added to many grains in 1998. Folic acid in most contraceptive pills and other meds. Also high levels in body building formula. Apart from the geoengineering. .. spraying us and the many toxins found in good dyes..think the poisoning is real and deliberate. Much love from a concerned fellow traveller.

    One important thing about iron is that if iron deficient you want to consume meat/liver. It contains heme-iron of which four of them makes up the core of the hemoglobin protein.

      Maximillian Brozinic when you take iron that is already or has already been used, you are asking your body to break it down, recycle it, make it usable for your body, lose most of it through digestion. Or, you could eat spinach, you know; plants, you know; where cows and other 'meat' get their iron from. Show me one just one video on CZcams of a vegan who has low iron levels. No it's cool I have nothing to do for the rest of my life so I'll be here waiting until you find that video. (Psss there isn't one, because news flash; vegans get more iron in their diet than most meat eating humans) Meanwhile I had a friend go to the doctor twice had a doctor tell them they were low on iron low in iron they need meat they need meat, yet every time they went back their iron was lower than the last. I suggested to them that they eat hummus with red bell peppers and some spinach as much as they could, next doctor visit iron levels were up. 😮

      "already been used", sorry but it doesn't work that way. Just google "bioavailability + iron" and see study after study tell it's clear language. They're even talking about "the meat factor", how adding meat to a vegetarian diet increases the uptake of other iron.

    Remember if you exercise and sweat a lot you lose iron and need more. If your eating organic bread you may not be getting much fortified,check the ingredients . If you drink caffeine or take turmeric it will lower your absorption of iron. Also, min amount of iron per day should be 8mg for men and 14 for women.

    Tried to do a little research on how they came up with the RDA for iron. The only thing I could find was a 1969 paper on 'controversy on iron needs', which admits that nobody knows what is too low or too hight. What is known that right now, the average intake is 18mg per day. It seems it might be entirely possible that recommendations are simply based on average intake and blood iron values on a Western diet, and that such intake and values might be too high for optimal health.
    I checked a 2004 paper on correlation of iron stores to diabetes. They basically said the risk correlated directly with level of iron storage. They didn't show the data, but this could possibly mean ANY level of iron storage. The higher the more likely.

    Excessive iron in the lung implicated in COPD. 'excessive iron buildup could be a major cause of COPD'.
    And Dr. Berg mentioned iron goes where there is inflammation.

    Had a GI bleed a couple weeks ago. At hospital Ferritin was slightly high, but Iron was 287. Seems high for someone bleeding so much.

    What do you think about LOW FERRITIN? What's causing it, and what's the best way to remedy it? It seems VERY common to be low as I know a lot of people (self included) that come back below the normal range. My best friend (with normal iron levels) has a consistent problem with low ferritin and has to have iron IVs every 6-7 MONTHS to get her levels up. Within a few days, she starts feeling much more energetic and upbeat, but over time it gets low again. I worry about the iron IVs being too oxidizing, but there's no doubt they help her feel better.

      Low stomach acid can be a cause according to my research. You need HCl to break down the proteins. Also, an infection of some type could be the cause.. but, bear in mind an infection can cause a false high for ferritin. Some parasites thrive on iron too.

      My aunt has that and said her hematologist says ferritin is just iron storage. So if it's low then it's possible there's not enough iron in your diet. She has to take iron supplements to get her ferritin numbers up and it worked.

    I'm starting to believe that iron excess and systemic candida are two sides of the same coin: It is clear that candida binds iron because its cells need iron, so it might be a toxicity valve for the body to let candida grow. Conversely, if you kill candida, then the so called herx reaction might be the freeing of iron and concommitant toxicity - not temporary at all. So it appears the key would be to reduce iron levels first - or at least chelate the freed iron from the killed candida

      I do have candida high iron and low ferriting, how do I fix the candida ? my other "doctor" recommended fighting it off with a diferent species of mold, so if you have candida overgrowth you inject another yeast into your stream so it balances out, is it valid ?

      @@rebeka145 I don’t think so. The problem is not the type of yeast but the amount. If I recall there are quick solutions like cranberry juice or meds, but the only way to prevent recurrence in the long run I think is to reduce foods high in iron (red meat and fortified foods), possibly with iron chelation

      @@Rene-uz3eb I understand its the amount that is the problem. Wouldnt another yeast "take over" and balance out though? I think we all need friendly yeast just not too much of it. My theory is antibiotics cause it, they are after all made of mold. Really hard to figure this out, my doctors only tell me to eat more red meats and irom since my ferritin is so low. I try to fight candida with oregano oil, also heard propolis made with alcohol kills it off. Iron on the other hand and candida really are problematic issues.

      @@rebeka145 I suppose yeast could be part of the evolved micro biome along with gut bacteria. I can’t find anyone saying that yeasts are beneficial in any way, research ongoing, but we ingest them that’s clear. In reality bacteria in the gut are iron scavengers. They also produce essential short chain fatty acids. So maybe candida can also act as iron scavenger, inasmuch as it can leave the body.
      Regarding another yeast taking over being less problematic, given that candida is the main yeast in all humans, it’s not really a pathogen unless the body provides the environment. With bacteria I think we know which ones are pathogenic and which are part of the micro biome. So this replace the yeast with another yeast is pure speculation without research. And even the microbiome adapts to what you eat, not the other way around. If you’re missing a type of good bacteria completely then ingesting via probiotics could work, but again I don’t think we know if there are any better yeasts than candida. Interesting idea though.
      Antibiotics definitely cause candida overgrowth so in that case probiotics, oregano oil etc might be enough to knock out candida without recurrence.

    I donated blood Today in order to reduce any high Iron conditions that I suspect I have due the extra Iron i take in from supplements. As I suspected my Iron was High. Hopefully this will work. I dont eat grains or anything thats outside of Keto and OMAD. I was 230lbs in April 2022, I am currently 165 as of Nov 12 2022. I look and feel like a total different person. I owe it all to Dr. Bergs educational vids

      I would never take iron sulfate, this iron is made from steel,, this iron you can not take to much of. It makes you constipated.

    Update on my iron journey, with a big rant thrown in.
    With slight but persistent gout having come back I was questioning everything. Unless this is some rebound effect, which i will update on if so, I figured it out because I've for the first time in many years have been able to sleep almost 9 hours daily 4 days in a row now. This used to be my usual, and that's incredible to me. Guess what it was? Alpha linolenic acid/GLA deficiency! THE essential fatty acid. Not freaking EPA/DHA, which I took daily, high quality at that. I even had a bottle of hemp oil ALA which I sipped from on and off, which must have given me relief without knowing, but I thought everyone says EPA DHA is better.
    And the insult to injury: where do you think there is a ton on ALA? In canola oil, the maligned oil by every real keto and health advocate on earth. And then the carnivore iron overload. Just wow. It was quite the learning journey.
    While trying to figure things out and getting the impression that natural iron chelators like quercetin must be the bomb from research, but finding nothing published on EDTA wrt iron, I dropped the latter. Which gave me brain fog in retrospect, so definitely, for me, the naturals are not enough (quercetin, IP6, green tea, alpha lipoid acid). After the alpha linolenic acid cured my sleep and gout, in conjunction with low iron diet, I went back on EDTA and now starting to feel as well as I did before, no more brain fog and getting stronger each day.

    A few months ago I had a liver biopsy done and they found that I have iron overload. After following up with the GI Dr, he didn't seem to concerned about. Now after watching this, I'm starting to have second thoughts. Should I ask for a second opinion from a different doctor?

      Chick peas also contain lectins, which are plant-based proteins (of which gluten is one : the most famous one, but by no means the only one) which can irritate the gut lining and cause inflammation and other systemic problems, unless they are cooked in a pressure cooker. See the work of Dr Steven Gundry - he has lots of videos on CZcams.

    Hello Dr. Berg. I am a 54 y.o. male. I am obese. I had gastric bypass surgery May 7, 2007. February 2009, I weighed in at 252 lbs. Everything was going well until the following months. I lost my only brother, a younger cousin, and my favorite Aunt. I started gaining weight again.
    I had type 2 diabetes prior to the surgery but with the weight loss, I was no longer diabetic.
    When I moved to Florida in 2013, I was 352 lbs. In August 2019, I had a DVT and 2 PEs, which thankfully I survived. I ended up with a heart arrhythmia the month after that. I take Jantoven 7.5mg and Metoprolol Succinate ER 25mg in the morning and at night.
    This past February, I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease. I also was diagnosed 2 years ago with type 2 diabetes, again. I took my diagnosis of the fatty liver seriously. I stopped using sugar and salt, followed a low-fat and no carb/low-carb diet. I now weigh 284 lbs. Recent blood tests have revealed I no longer have type 2 diabetes and I also no longer have fatty liver disease but I have a new problem, iron deficiency.
    I am taking 65mg of Iron with 500mg of Vitamin C, on an empty stomach and I am taking milk thistle once a day for 30 days, stopping for 3 months and then another 30 days. I was told by my Nurse Practitioner, Mike that the reason I am suffering from malabsorption is because of the gastric bypass surgery on my stomach, which is why, he says I am taking Iron with the Vitamin C, to improve absorption.
    Now, I had stomach cramps the first 2 weeks, then I started feeling dizzy. Now, I am having issues with shortness of breath and chest pain. Now since my cardiologist has cleared of any and all heart issues, with the exception of my minor heart arrhythmia. I am being told the pain is muscular skeletal. I am just concerned and looking for a second opinion, for my peace of mind.
    I would really appreciate any insight you have.

      Have a look at trace minerals especially copper and chromium in your situation but look at the other trace minerals too.

    What's the deal with ferritin levels, right? My iron and blood checks out fine, but I'm still dealing with hair loss and looking paler than usual. My functional medicine doc suggested ferritin injections, but my regular doc thinks they're a big no-no due to toxicity concerns.
    I'm doing all the supplement stuff and eating right, but the hair keeps falling out, and ferritin seems to be the missing link.
    What's your take on this? Could be a great topic for your next vid! Thanks for all you do!

    I had high ferritin (hemochromatosis) but the (terrible) hematologist I saw ran my ferritin into the ground with a very aggressive venesection schedule. I'm still trying to claw my way back to normal levels after 3 years of having suboptimal ferritin levels. My high ferritin/iron riddled body could run rings around my current self. I could train olympic weightlifting for hours at a time with high ferritin, but now my strength, energy & motivation have dropped significantly.

      I don't believe he's done a vid on Hemochromatosis because it's not something that changing diet will easily cure. It's actually a genetic mutation that's not caused or cured by diet. Occurs in folks of Celtic ancestry.
      The process is simple and involves periodically removing blood until levels stabilize. Not really a Dr. Berg type of a cure, I'm afraid.

    Like the video but I eat a lot of grains. I just eat a lot generally, but food is my biggest bill, I eat what's cheaper. I'm looking up the effects of iron excess because I started eating a lot of spinach and I'm s man. Also, right after starting that may be a coincidence, but my lymph node in my right neck is a little swollen and sore. Trying to narrow down the causes.

    Alright I think I figured out the snag on my deironing trail, ie gout resurfacing a bit, after having disappeared for months.
    My adherence to only low iron foods, which for me is lots of dairy and fruits, along with chelation, led to copper deficiency even though I took supps.
    I took two copper pills today making sure not to eat fruit (vitamin C impedes absorbtion) or dairy (calcium impedes absorbtion) or any other supplements while taking it and voila, gout gone few hours later and I did several dozen pull ups.

      Def was it. My brain fog very much lifting. My new protocol is now to put in a pause in chelation while staying on the low iron diet, reasoning that chelation works on the iron in the blood, and unless you don't have hemachromatosis it takes a while to tease out iron from cell storage. And of course at some point you want some iron in your blood so it can to its work.
      The second part is to take copper by itself and while not taking dairy or vitamin C at the same time

    I have low ferritin in my blood due to heavy menstrual cycles. So this year I had 6 iron infusions, my ferritin is still at 9, BUT now on an MRI for a uterine fibroid they saw iron overload 2.7 in my liver and I never had that before, I don’t know what to do and I don’t trust my doctor.

      How low is your ferritin level. Mine ia 8.6 and doctor suggest me to do iron infusion. After the infusion, ai felt burning all over my body and my skin complexion changed darker than my original skin color. This makes me upset and anxious. It ruined my face and my appearance..I've done blood work and my ferritin level rise sharply to 508. I am so worried

    DR Berg, I was diagnosed with Iron Deficiency Anemia and prescribed a one time Iron infusion of 1000mg Monoferrin, I am scared this may be damaging and toxic. Any thoughts :-0 Scared - cannot seem to get the iron up no matter what Ive tried over the years. Heavy menses is the problem. Also think I have an absorption problem. Any tips to protect my tissues during the infusion?

    So I still didn’t understand what exactly I need to do to get rid of iron overload which suddenly appeared in my blood test. I do not take any supplements, I do not eat any red meat or meat that consists iron. I have no idea where this came from I am skinny healthy and regardless of that I have iron over overload extremely high cholesterol and prediabetes. I am very confused.

    What about for people who have thalassemia? My mom, grandmother, sisters and I all have thalassemia and are chronically anemic. I know when it's becoming an issue for me because I get so tired it feels almost as if I've been drugged, I'm so tied I just can't stay awake no matter what I do and I'm also freezing cold and can't think as clearly as normal and just overall feel absolutely horrible. These things all happen at the same time and the buildup to this point is normally only 1-3 days. I normally either take an iron pill or eat liver at those times. I must be careful which iron I take. A well meaning Dr prescribed me iron pills not knowing I had thalassemia and after 2 days of taking those pills I began blacking out each time I stood up. As for liver, I HATE it, but when I get "sick" like that I crave it so much I'll eat an entire pack of it scalding hot straight out of the pan. After taking iron or eating liver the symptoms (feeling weak, exhausted, cold, irritable etc) typically begin to fade within hours. The point I'm making is that given my experience with thalassemia and how horrible I feel when I get "sick" and how rapidly I feel better after getting some iron in my system I just can't wrap my mind around how the things in this video might apply to myself and my family. We have beta minor thalassemia. It's always mystified me when Drs have told me I shouldn't have symptoms or they should be mild... They aren't mild. No, I'm not dying or in constant need of transfusions but when I get sick like that it's hard to miss. When my fiance sees me fighting to wake up but instead spending a whole day freezing cold under 3-4 heavy blankets with a space heater running passing out repeatedly he KNOWS what's wrong and usually brings me liver from a local restaurant. Several hours later I'm back to normal. I've never considered that no symptoms or low impact on my life. I can't say I really understand the disorder but it's impact on my health and life are pretty clear to see.

    I have an Iron overload from too many blood transfusions. I am taking a very expensive medication called Deferiprone 1,000 MG tablets. does taking this med conflict with Phytic Acid? So far after taking this med for 30 days with no reduction of my Feritin levels.

      Not always a good idea- I donated twice this year thinking it was a good idea and now I have anxiety and chest pains/SOB from low ferritin levels and likely an accompanying low hemoglobin level. It’s not for evedyone

    Interesting... My Doctor thought I might have Hemochromatosis... To reduce the amount of Iron in my system, I did "Blood letting"... By donating blood, once every couple of months, my next blood tests showed no sign of excess Iron... What's your take on that...??? Thanks for the video :-)

      My "google" research into my high Ferritin Score levels (an Iron marker that's tested, but not actual iron, stored or daily available - see "@Dawn 1" one comment back) that were tested recently (800 & then 967) stated that donating blood and a medical "blood cleansing" transfusion procedure, with chelating "chemicals" (not specifically mentioned) removing toxic minerals (all??) from one's blood and returning it "clean." Dr Berg sounds like a better way.

    I have hemochromatosis at 34- I had a PCP who believed me and got me genetic testing. My mom and dad both have the mutated genes- I believe it would have layed dormant had I not got bit by a tick 9 years ago with 2 coinfections- I was misdiagnosed a variety of times with lupus, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and got a left knee joint tumor synovial chondromatosis It’s ALL inflammation- I refuse to be my diagnosis. I have been in remission for some times, my radical diet change, prayer life and community involvement and low impact exercise mixed with extended breastfeeding (daughter 3, pregnant with another and will be tantum feeding) I am not inflamed and when I get a flare up it’s always something I did or didn’t do- diet, personal stress, lack of sleep/work/life balance. The phlebotomy treatments help me and I thank you and recommend you to everyone I know with a health issue which is lol, all of us equally strong yet fragile human beings ❤

      If you have hereditary haemochromotosis I'd stop using that skillet.

    Dr. Berg. Your Nutritional YEAST provide 111% of daily recomendation of iron. Would it be good to consume a tablet a day, or would it be better to do it every other day?
