  • Henry VIII had many different mistresses, but there was one who was the sister of the King’s second wife and Queen. Mary Boleyn had a very interestingly life, and she was also considered the mistress of the French King too. However she was a woman who was shunned greatly by her family and also by court following the death of her sister Anne Boleyn. She was treated poorly at times throughout her life, but she defied what her family wanted for her, and married a man who many believed was below her status. Today she’s seen as a very interesting figure, and can be considered the other Boleyn girl despite Anne initially being known as this. But what is the story behind the remarkable life of Mary Boleyn, the Queen’s sister?

Mary's marriage against the royal couple's favour and her consequent fall from grace ensured she dodged a bullet.... Errr... Axe.

Let's not forget that another descendant of Mary still sits on the throne. Through Elizabeth II's mother, the lineage goes back to Mary. So even King Charles is a descendant of Mary. She really got the last laugh 😝

I was always fascinated by Mary Boleyn. As well as Mary & Margaret Tudor. They seemed more fascinating then Henry 7 & 8 and Elizabeth 1. More reckless…more passionate. More human.

Mary was a lot better looking than Anne and seemed a much nicer, sweeter person. She was ruled by her natural desires and love, during a time when virginity, rank and status were bargaining tools when it came to marriage. She was a free spirit during a time when this was frowned upon. While Anne played hard to get and eventually won Henry and the crown, ultimately she lost when she failed to produce a male heir and subsequently lost her head. Mary was happily married with a man she loved and raised a family. So ultimately Mary triumphed.

I partially agree. Mary was prettier and sweeter. But, I will always believe that Anne was 'pushed' by her father and Uncle into marrying the King 👑 . Then, when things went South, Anne was abandoned by her own father and Uncle. She made some mistakes but she was framed. Mary was the 'lucky' one : she not only married for true love, but, as this video says, she kept her head.

@@dianetheisen8664 To a certain extent Anne might have been pushed by her ambitious father, but I believe that she was very much a woman who knew her own mind and she herself wanted Henry and the crown. She was no victim.

@@dianetheisen8664 She wasn’t pusher by her father. Her father wasn’t happy about her relationship with the King. He was already prominent in society and had been for some time. Anne didn’t want the king either at first and even left court and went back to Hever to get away from his advances but he continued to pursue her and she eventually developed feelings for him.

@@susangavaghan She wouldn’t have known becoming Queen was an option. Something like that had never happened before. Yes, she eventually developed feelings for him but Henry was trying to figure out how to get a divorce before Anne. There’s no evidence she went in with the intention of becoming Queen.

Mary was, indeed, treated poorly by her parents. They could have provided for her when she was widowed. They refused to help her; probably because of Anne's relationship with the King. But in the end, it was Mary who survived the Tudors.

I'm sure Henry forced her with some family blackmail to be his mistress, as he seems to have always gotten his way. Spoiled brat. We all love Ann, yet she caused so much destruction. Poor Catherine; Ann stole her husband. Ann should have left court. What would history be today if she had. Would England still be Catholic? Elizabeth 1 would never have been born nor queen. Many say Elizabeth 1 was a great queen. In many aspects no. Many times she was cold and ruthless. The court was a mini tribe of gossip and betrayal. A very dangerous place to reside. And full of traitors with much ambitious to rise in favor and money. Women were used by their families to get in favor for monetary reasons, and to gain titles. Mary made the best choice to marry for love! Ann wanted to be Queen at all cost. So, off with her head. She wasn't very smart. Mary was.

What i find sad is the fact that people apparently feel the need to pit the sisters against each other, even if it's 5 centries ago. They do the same with Henry's wives as well.
But, I believe we can we not try to carry these rivalries 5 centuries later. Is it possible to appreciate each women for who they were, without saying one was 'prettier' 'smarter' 'nicer'? Even if they were fierce rivals back in the 1500s,i dont feel we have to that.
And i understand that we all have our favorites. (Mine is Anne Boleyn) And that comparisons are gonna be made and that they weren't perfect people, but lets try not demonize from this distance, please. And i also see why we compare
I can appreciate Mary Boleyn, probably a boisterous and easygoing sweet personality, and most likely pretty. She was " Kindness" in a play. But it would seem Mary had some nerve as well as her more famous sister. I'd say it takes courage to do what she did and knowingly marry a man beneath her,and face her family's immense dissarproval..I applaud her that. She had the guts to marry for love at a high cost.
I would even argue that this is almost as courageous as Anne was. Anne had the nerve and percerverence to go after the most powerful man in the country, and Mary when the oppisite and said:" well f it,im marrying a man that can love me for me. That each wanted different things and were not afraid to go after those things untill they got what they wanted. Unfortunately for poor Anne, that costed her,her life
