The Unringable Bells of Aston, South Yorkshire

  • The tower holds three bells, which are unringable and hung in a Taylors modern frame meant for six bells. However, we believe that either three were removed or three were never added. The tuning is a 1-3 of a 4 and they were believed to have last rung around the 1970s.
    The Treble and the 2nd were cast by Joseph Walker and Thomas Hilton of Rotherham in 1784, and the Tenor was cast by Taylors of Loughborough in 1913 and weighs in at 9cwt. They are now currently unringable and have no stays or sliders, and can only be chimed by an Ellacombe Apparatus from the base of the tower.
