For all the haters.. yes he said the pedals help. Help is the key word. From playing Axis currently versus previous single chain driven pedals there is a difference. However, the drummer still has a large responsibility in changing their foot motion to adjust. SO Wyatt is right, in that they HELP and he mentioned the work he had to do to increase speed and adjust to the direct drive.
I think thats a really important distinction. I remember when i started double bass thats all anyone said "direct drive is the only way to go" its not. Theres a different feel and probably different effort. If I was touring or playing 5 hours a day, then I'm sure the direct drive would be less fatiguing.
But its technique, he even says the same thing around the 10 minute mark. I wouldn't want new drummers to become discouraged because they cant afford nicer gear. you can do it with cheaper pedals too. Just look at covers of bands like all that remains, or as blood runs black (I know there are much faster bands but these are just what I started learning with). The tempos are "slow"100-140ish, but they do a lot of 32nd note runs (thats equivalent to 200+ bpm with 16th notes). You'll see all kinds of people with all kinds of pedals pulling it off. Learn the proper technique and youre good to go.
Jackson Agar great point! It’s not like the pedals automatically boost you to 200bpm. Practice is still and always involved.
Youre right on there man. My biggest fear is retraining my feet amd heels caise it took years to get where I got already. I wanna get am sjc kit next year and I dunno.. May have to try this setup put and rethink everything. Btw, metal fucking rules! Horns ☝!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
If you have never played a direct drive pedal before, it’s fucking different. Dude is right on saying you will have to kind of adjust your technique. Everyone is different and some people may get on DD and figure it out in 5 min. It doesn’t have to mean you have to spend a year trying to get your technique right with type of pedal. Or it could. I would suggest everyone at least try a DD pedal. Doesn’t have to be Trick. Find what you like. You figure out the twitch motion, you will get faster.
me too I have the roddysigA21s but at 1200 bucks they don't come with a case either but your more connected than any chain pedal I'm not even fast and they help.
Having used speed corba's and then switched to Czarcie Kopyto... Yes, the pedal does make a difference.
Did you try Trick as well to compare if there's any difference?
How much of a difference? I have a trick drive shaft on my speed cobras but i’m still struggling to make my pedals feel even. And that’s made it hard to increase my speed
@@blakeesper I put the shaft on my DW 9002 and the difference was noticeable. Idk about the original shaft on your tama, but the one no the DW was not good at all. Maybe that's why the difference was substantial
I have to say, I am really excited to someday get to use an expensive double bass pedal. I’ve always played on crappy cheap versions or mid tier. I think dw3000 is about the highest end pedal I’ve used. I’ve never really complained. As long as you tweak them correctly they all work well. When people say a better pedal makes a big difference it really makes me wonder. Because I’m pretty freaking fast and precise on crappy pedals. How good would I be on a $1000 pedal? Lol
@@MisterRorschach90 There's a learning curve like most things, but if you feel like your current pedals are holding you back, moving to high grade gear is always a good move. No matter what anyone says about X piece of gear, it really is all on the player and how they feel playing it. That said, I blind bought the Trick low mass pair, and I'd do it again. I've played a pair of Kopytos, they're also fantastic, but I didn't find them so much better than the Tricks that I wanted to wait a year for them. ACD is another widely used pedal by metal drummers, they also make retrofits for pretty much any pedal.

for heel toe double strokes, I was playing these for several months, developing heel toe on them on a medium spring tension, a turn and a half back on the dials, got pretty solid at the 180-220 range, then tried cranking up the springs to max, and bam, I can do 260-280, even upward of 300. dayum.

@@magiisk2385 lets talk about pulling those speeds without triggers... thats the real impressive shit, its annoying to see twitchy dudes pulling off 300 when the beaters are barely making a sound. when you hear some powerful doubles its equally as impressive as hearing powerful singles with no triggers
@@endowednigerian show me a video of someone pulling off 16th notes at 300 bpm for more than a split second. It’s next to impossible. The amount of power you lose at those speeds makes it impossible to hit the drum without triggers and make it sound good. I’m not sure why there are still people out there who view triggers as some cheap parlor trick to get you to higher speeds. It still takes years of practice and control to get there, and then be able to do it evenly. Even George Kollias uses foot blaster triggers and he’s a beast.regardless of if you’re using the ankle technique or heel toe, or swivel, they’re necessary to reach those speeds consistently.
@@TheWolf92 i dont believe triggers are what you described them, but i hate when people only tap the kickdrum and leave all the work to the triggers! that is a cheap easy way out IMO, but if they are actually hitting the kickdrum with power but use triggers to help with the live setting so the rest of the band and crowd can hear the kicks then i have no problem with anyone using triggers. and yes it may take time to control the fast twitch at those super high tempos but that will never compare in my ears to a solid acoustic sound with balls! you might disagree but that is what i think

Wyatt put 3,4 inch plywood under your kit cover with carpet then use then use 1 inch wood screws in front and around the pedals leaving a little bit exposed to secure in place works very well! Keep rocking love you videos

Trick’s made some innovations that should and imo probably will become industry standards. I’m finally about to have one of their low mass double pedals myself.
I love my Pro1-Vs. I’ve had them forever. 10 years I think. They’ve held up great. I’ve only had to replace one part due to threads stripping. I’ve played many, many shows with them so they’ve been through a lot. Trick makes great pedals, drums, and products. Their laser triggers are the most reliable triggers I’ve used.

Edit... I did not lose any power in the low mass version. Also, the "velcro" they included with my set were more like plastic spikes that don't let them move.... like even when I wanna pull them off my rug haha.
I agree with you on the entire review, I love mine you got it all spot on. I velcro mine all over the bottom and use a roland drum mat and they stick like shit to a blanket! Yeah I really need a case too! I think a company call pelican ( not sure if that's correct) do loads of hard cases all all shapes and sizes, foam inserts etc. So glad you gave them a good review. They're just a great piece of design meets functionality. 👊
I had the privilege to spend a few days at their shop in Illinois, where they build, design & create these great pedals & so much more. I am an FSE who traveled the world, installing custom laser marking systems and also a musician. I have to say... these are some of the coolest people you could ever meet! Every person there was a musician, mostly drummers of course. Super intelligent, yet down to earth. Met and spoke with Mike (founder and owner) many times. Great guy. He had a loft above the production floor which was their band's rehearsal area, and down on the work floor was the most badass drum kit I've ever seen in person. I think it was for quality testing of the builds, but it might have been just for inspiration and/or stress relief during a work day. Great place... best drum gear on the market!
Dirk Verbeuren, Gene Hoglan, Frost, Hannes Grossman all play or played 16th notes at 240bpm+ for long passages with chain drives. I'm sure there are many more.

If they could do that consistently at that tempo with chain drives they could go probably around 260 if they switched to direct drive

I've been using my Iron Cobra since I bought it in 2000... The Power Glide cam version. Recently replaced the original Tama driveshaft with a Trick replacement shaft, and holy shit, it made that thing a whole new animal. Love the crap out of that thing, so smooth... Really feels like playing two separate kicks now!

Anyone curious about direct drives of any sort coming from a chain drive. Listen at 10:07. This is really key for going “faster” Direct drives do not work for stomping or beater burying styles, in fact that’s exactly when they will feel incredibly weak and jagged. Just as importantly you must re examine your seating habits. Avoid putting any of your weight and stability for balance on the pedals, scoot further back on your throne even enough to have your ass hang off the back a bit. You should be able to take your feet off the pedals and not move or tip forward. This will allow you to “float” over the pedals. From there rather than stomping, you “flick” or “whip” the pedal so to speak.
Great review thank you! I'm looking to buys these this helped out a lot! Your right its all about physics. I sold my speed cobras and went back to iron cobra hp900 and fabricated a spring under the pedal for faster response. So just think what I can do with this. Im going for it.

I play a Yamaha dfp9 double with a strap drive.
I saw at least 3 big youtube reviewers say the same exact thing - that it was just as responsive as any pedal they've tried.
So I had to get one- best equipment decision I ever made! So fast and effortless!

Ive experienced the situation of the slave pedal & the bass drum moving forward because while playing so i fix it by tying up the slave pedal into the throne & i also tied the bass drum into the throne..&i designed the tie to be comfortable&fast 4 me to set-up..& it works😁

My bigfoot developed a little squeak. Emailed the company, got a response in hours from the CEO who recommended getting a bit of Lucas Red 'n Tacky. Two minutes to apply a light coat to the rolling bits inside and it's good again. So be prepared, it can happen, but it's a simple fix. The rubbers that sit on the bass drum hoop like to get eaten by the hoop, that kind of sucks. I'm looking at some rubber putty type stuff to rebuild them. Nice review Wyatt!
Been checking for your vid like every day man, and congrats on the 100k! Love the review, I had a feeling you'd take these pedals to an amazing level right off. Can you do a video or maybe a side note sometime to explain what exercises you did to help get that insane ankle twitch? That's money, I don't think I've ever met a drummer who can rise up that fast.

I've never played on a Trick or an Axis, but considering I can do 270+ on my DDs I've never felt compelled to spend hundreds extra on another pedal, but God damn the Trick pedals just look so fucking good. I wish I could try them out, because if they were even .1% better I would probably have to get them, lol. Thanks for the video man
Fantastic double base drum pedal. However, I found the footboards too heavy and ordered lightweight foodboards. What a difference much faster and smoother now! I also shortened the connecting shaft slightly!

Hey Wyatt. I think I said this in your previous video but I want to elaborate again. I own both Tricks and Czarcie Kopyto (pronounced Chachi Cohpito) and I can say that Czarcies are 1000 times better. They are super responsive (more so than tricks) and I've always found that the compression spring was a lot harder to control in comparison to the standard springs. You can also change the average constant tension with a virtically sliding locking mechanism just below the spring. I would seriously recommend getting a pair even though it's pretty expensive and hard to get. They will blow your mind.

I now have this pedal it's very easy to go fast extremely well built well worth the money. My trick is not the low mass footboard. I just saw the new black low mass pedal with some green parts it's the sickest pedal out now I badly want it
I have these , I got the demo version from sweetwater for 700 and they were brand new pretty much. They’re great
DW 9000. I’ve used them for years. I recently purchased a PDP Concept Direct Drive long board double pedal for my secondary kit and I would suggest those. They only cost me about $240 new and have a similar design. Worth checking them out before taking the pricey plunge on Trick or Axis pedals. Also, the entire bottom plate of the pedals have a thin piece of rubber so they won’t move lol
Hey Wyatt I have these in the black widow edition. I have found for myself that putting the chain conversion on these pedals was the ticket for me. All direct drive pedals have always felt more like a piece of springy exercise equipment to me. I would love to see you try the chains on these and see how you thought they compared to the direct drive. I have found no loss in speed with the chains on the Tricks in fact I find I can hold faster speeds longer with the chains. I think its all the top notch ingredients of these pedals (compression spring,ergonomics,and build quality) that make faster speeds maybe more achievable for some,and not just the direct drive link. When you are able I would love to see you put the chains on the tricks and do a direct comparison again against the speed cobras. If your willing to do so when you get time let me know I will buy the chains and send them to you or donate to your channel whatever works better for you. Thanks for the videos.
I am getting the Pro V1 and slapping the Trick Drums P1VCK Pro 1-V Chain Retrofit Chain Conversion Kit on em first thing.👍
That would defeat the purpose. If going the chain route, might as well go with a less expensive pedal such as Tama iron cobra
Iron cobras don’t have the same features and build quality as a trick pedal The compression spring on a trick gives it a totally different feel even with chain.

Can still pull 180 bpm with my Pearl Eliminators doubles chain with the red cams n some adjusting Not bad for 51yrs old. I've played my drum teachers czarcie Kyoto pedals and they're amazing
Same for the weight on the slave pedal here too Wyatt I got the black widow version of the pedal and use a cutting matt clipped into the hoop clamp with weights on top
And I also put the adhesive felt beater piece on the back of the bottom of the base plate to keep it from rocking
Daniel Williams the ex drummer from devil wears prada plays with Trick pedals and his drumming is very techy. Always been a big fan of these pedals.

I have one question, since you showed the spring tension knob/wheel: Is there also some sort of markers or numbers or anything to see where youre spring tension is at? Because I couldnt see any in the video? Like say tension is on 1,2,3,4,5 and so on?
Nice review! Duct tape a la Randy Cooke keeps my pedals in place.. keeps the heel plates from hopping on me as well. as long as you don’t mind humming them up, the duct tape method is reliable. Cheers!

I have the exact pedals I will be bringing them to work to design a spike system . I have it all figured out and we have the technology. Yes I do love my pedals but I wish they came with a case.

I've played with the same pair of Pearl Eliminators I received on my 15th birthday... 19 years ago. They're starting to fall apart and I'm in the market for a new pair. I'm really intrigued by the design of these pedals. I LOVE the ease of adjustments to spring tension. Just afraid of the price tag because my pedals would then be more valuable than the entire kit lol.
Yamaha FP9 is another great direct drive model ppl can get less than trick price it's $699 or less online. I payed like $700 OR LESS. sorry just thought I'd tell ppl. Great pedal .

I would hope that after all these years they got better. Danny from Oceano recommended me these back when they put their first album out but I never got them lol.
Ive had these since 2012ish. Still brand new with everyday use. The only snag was when i was on a gig and some random dude went to the kit and started using the bass drum when beater screws were loose (i was disassembling them) and the screw tap failed. I just bought the replacement cam that has the screw tap.
I owned the first year version of this pedal. I LOVED how fast they were. But I felt they lost all feel when doing doubles for slower music. I ultimately sold them for dw 5000s. Granted I wasn’t blasting at 220+ but the 5000 was and still is right for me
i got my czarcie kopyto pedals last week and yes, a direct drive pedale transmittes force much better than every pedal i’ve ever tried. i also ordered these trick pro beaters but they didnt arrive yet. So i‘ve copied the set up from Thomas Crémier. BUT you have to adapt your technique to this sort of pedals.

My opinion yes the pedal does help with speed. Having said that I do think most of it has to do with the technique using the ankles & caff musles and building those muscles up. Just like hands the faster you go - arms - wrists - fingers. Kinda similar with feet.

Great pedal for electric of mic'd kits. I can't get the same amount of power from these or the Axis pedals as I do with Chain drive pedals. They feel great, very fast, but lack power, now matter how I adjust them .
I am not speed demon but I love mine. I have the hi hat stand and also love how smooth they are.

Awesome review! @Wyatt, you mentioned that at 235 Tricks were easier than SC's. Is there any difference at 160? 99% of what I play is 200 bpm or less, with majority around 160. When you're at that speed, does it matter still? If you get on the tricks for a 160 song with extended db rolls, do you find it easier/better/maybe even not as good, than the SC's at those speeds? THANKS!!!!
I was curious about direct drive, and like you I was worried about losing power, and I just got my DW 9000's a few months back, so instead of spending close to a grand on something I may not like,I opted for the ddrum quicksilver pedals for like $300, they're direct drive, but come with chain cams so if you want to swap them you can, also they can be used as single pedals which sealed the deal for me, because I have a double bass kit. As it turns out though I'm hooked on direct drive! so now I'm about to tell my girl I need 2 single Trick Bigfoots for Xmas 😂
I played the Pro-1V for a few years (including the laser triggers they make for them). I kept having problems in the long run (snapping heads off of bolts, wearing down flat spots where the bearing rolls on the plate in front of the spring, stripping out the inside of the hub where the driveshaft connects, laser trigger cables dying mid tour). I switched to Czarcie Kopyto in May and I'm never getting another pair of pedals again. Perfect pedals. I can make them feel like literally any pedal I want and they're built like TANKS. If you can get your hands on them, do it.

@@TheWitchOvAgnesi before Trick the list of pedals I owned was fairly short (Axis A Longboards, a very cheap pair of Pearl pedals, and Tama Iron Cobra 900's). That being said. I'm MORE THAN happy with the Czarcie Kopyto's that I have now. They're honestly perfect
@@TheWitchOvAgnesi I will say though, I can do basically everything I can do now on the Trick pedals, or even the Pearl Redlines (yes the chain pedals, I actually like them a lot). But the Czarcies just make everything require less effort. Trick is runner up though

I work a Yamaha 9500cs. I'm running the straps. Lotta give and eventually I have to adjust the hammers due to strap fatigue. 🖤 the peddles dont get me wrong. I may go back to the double chain. 🤘🐲
