The first hoax (well, scam) I fell for was when I was on Netscape at school during a rare computer lab visit in the '90s. This may have been my first time online, but at least one of my first. I got one of those old scam banner ads: "Punch the monkey and win $10!" I clicked right on its face and a page I didn't understand came up. I got my teacher for help since I wanted my $10. She closed the page and explained that it was a lie. I felt embarrassed but never trusted a banner ad again, and there were scam banner ads for a long time to come. Only other time I clicked one was when they started making them look like windows with a fake X. Got me once or twice. I also remember chain emails saying something good would happen if I sent it to enough people and/or something bad would happen if I didn't. Even as a kid I didn't fall for those. Apparently that still goes on today, only being transmitted by social media now.

I know a lot of people fell for that one. Its easy to get tricked especally back then.
