This was when the series reached its peak in terms of atmosphere.
Actually, in terms of atmosphere, the franchise reached the top with Resident Evil 4.Sure the game had a lot of action.But nothing beats Resi 4 atmosphere and environments.

Nah - the village was a great start, but after that it felt odd to wind up in a castle, and eventually some milita fortress.
These games were never great at being story driven, but RE4 just didn't click with me. It's fun, no doubt about that though.
+silico I mostly talked about Resi 4 atmosphere because of certain parts.To me, the Castle was a great idea, though I admit the Island seemed indeed like a fortress and ruined the whole thing.The village was amazing, the Castle sewers with Verdugo were amazing, the laboratories with Regenerators were amazing as well as the cavern with U-3 and the prison with Garrador.The water room in the castle was also horrific, especially in professional mode, and the Bitores Mendez fight was pretty much one of the most horrifying Resi bosses ever.
DanteLeon DMC/Resi Honestly the island wasn't terrible in its own right but you're both right that it felt weird to be somewhat thrown in there like that. I agree with you though, castle was phenomenal. Thing was with RE 4, 5 and 6 the last thirds of those 3 games always seemed to be never as good as the first two thirds wether it was RE 4 or 5 or the 3 campaigns for RE 6 which always seemed to be less enjoyable after chapter 3 no matter it was Leon, Chris or Jake

In all seriousness though, I love Resident Evil 4, but I hate how many people give it a free pass and instead decide to hate on Resident Evil 5. RE4, while a good game, was the game that completely changed the franchise for worse, both in gameplay and atmosphere, RE5 just followed in its footsteps. Sure, there were still those moments of brilliant horror like the Regenerador in the prison, but those are rare, unlike in REmake which every moment is filled with tension and horror.
Don't get me wrong, RE4 is a great game and still really fun, but giving it a free pass and saying that it did not change the franchise to action-oriented just because it's the one you like the most is just completely wrong.
22:07 Cold water was probably the most nerve racking one, it was replaying so much. Even though nothing scary really happened. That song was enough
12:04 "Vacant Room" is probably my favorite from the entire series. Its so creepy, eerie and unsettling. It kinda gives you a vibe that you're not quite in trouble yet, but certain doom lurks right around the corner.
@@apina9731 I do feel ya on that, it is very tension building; but let's agree to disagree on the vibe we receive. This track invokes a very different, but just as powerful emotion on me. It creeps me the F out and puts my sense of terror on defcon 5. At least it did the first time I played the game, and had no idea what was coming next. It reminds me a lot of the music of the NES version of Shadowgate; which was entirely digitized and not performed by professional musicians like this is; but still managed to be hair raising.

This was the one I was searching for when I looked for the ost. I don't know why it stands out so much to me but it's the one from the game(my favourite ever game, in fact) that I find running through my head the most.

I listened to the piece like three times, and everything inside it is configured to make you feel uneasy, from a theorically musical perspective.
The first appearing are the chimmes playing slightly off the beat, this makes the chimmes sounds kinda odd and off. Then the chimmes are doubled confusing you further. Then you get the tuba and strings telling you the ''actual beat'' but the chimmes start changing it's position (Listen with headphones and you can hear the chimmes dancing around, they keep confusing you and luring you somewhere else.) Then you get the melodies in the harp and ''piano'', pretty eerie very dissonant, no armony where your ear can ''rest''.
We have a desorientating factor (chimmes)
The lower instruments telling you the actual beat kind of like showing you the way.
Then the harp and piano playing an eerie melody telling you the nature of the place you're in.
Everything carefully put in place to make you feel uneasy and spooked :P

latiaos11 I love your take on this but it’s funny - I actually find this relaxing, perhaps more so than the save room music. Of course I’m the guy who listens to villain themes daily and ambient soundtracks are just as relaxing as intentional songs with that purpose.
Save room theme makes you feel that's the only place in the mansion where you're safe. In the same time you know that can't stay there any longer...RE1 definitely one of the best game ever.
I just beat the gamecube version of this game for the very first time.
It's definitely one of the most underrated games of all time. I can't wait to pop in Re2 and see what it gots in store for me.

no matter how hard capcom tries they will never capture the lightning in the bottle of this game ever, great atmosphere, great suspense,item and resources management,all around masterpiece, pure survival horror.

Vacant Room (12:04) gives me the creeps...think it was called “More Rooms” on the original soundtrack. What an atmospheric game, doesn’t get much better than this

5:44 is my favorite theme. Its creepy and sets a greta tone for the rest of the game. I love the clock sound in game, it adds a lot of atmosphere.
Save Room and Vacant Room are the two best songs. They both have a great balance between being creepy and strangely comforting
My favorite game, my favorite soundtracks, my favorite story, my favorite characters, my favorite villain, my favorite protagonists. This game is fck amazing. It can be renewed a few more times and I will buy each one without hesitation. I'm terribly surprised how many people skip this game and go for the 2-4 remake

I've been looking for "Sigh of Relief (Music Box)" for very long, and I don't know how I overlooked it.
It always sent chills down my spine. So terrifying! The only save room music (if you could call it that) that wouldn't make me feel secure, and I love it.
Actually it's a remix of the Meeting Rebecca theme from the original.
Isn't Sigh of Relief the most soothing track in the game and the only one that makes tou feel truly safe though? Especially since it's connected to the purest, most innocent character in the game. (Barry Fuckin' Burton)

"Gallery" is underrated here. It's kind of genius how it sits on a major third and yet still somehow manages to be so creepy.

Didn't get to play the original until years after the GC. But man, the beauty and atmosphere of the Gamecube version was just amazing growing up.
Vacant Room certainly added to my nervousness playing this game. Started not trusting any room playing the theme.
I'm 22 and I just got the courage to play through this game. Great game. I had it on GameCube for years but could never play it cuz it was just too goddamn scary. I'm not that good with horror but I've been coming around to the genre, whether it be movies or video games.
But still.. the safe room is still the greatest. Lol

this really is a fantastic soundtrack - "Disappearance" and "Cold Water" are positively chilling. also, i can't believe they cut "Underground Passage," it speaks to how much good material they had to work with

Some of these tracks have also a RE4 vibe in them, like "Terror" 8:38 . It's good to know they wanted RE4 to keep a pretty similar tone in its music. It helped the game to stay relatively on the horror "zone", as opposed to 5 and 6.
Yeah I agree it sounds like the "Ganado II" soundtrack. Misao Senbongi and Shusaku Uchiyama were both in these games hence the similarities.

Question: I think read on another Resident Evil Remake soundtrack collection that some of the songs in the HD version are missing some parts. Is that true? I already own this game for the Wii, but I don't want to buy the HD version for the Switch if there any missing features that detract from the whole experience.
