For anyone looking for a simple tutorial on howbto bottom paint your boat, it goes as follows...
tape off the water line
Scuff the crap out of the old bottom paint remove all your barnacles etc. The more scuffed up the better. Anywhere left untouched will just Peel off.
Wear protection as the dust will stain your skin, lungs, and your eyes. Well, it wont stain your eyes but you don't want that stuff in there.
Once your scuffed clean the surface of dust and roll on the bottom coat. Go thick...
Pull your tape at a raised 45 angle..I prefer before its cured and your done.
Its a messy pain in the butt job but it is simple and adds a lot of visual appeal to your boat.
Thank you for a precise and informative video. I have to fix a crack on my catalina 22 next to the keel, and have to paint the bottom at the same time. Happy I finally found something to help.
Great info, thanks for sharing.
Very informative... appreciated.
nothing but the best
Great video. I'm looking to repaint my 16' LUND. I recently patched up a couple holes in the hull (nothing over 17"), but now the hull looks like putty and old paint. What color do you suggest for the lower unit on my 48? Thanks!
Hi^^ If I want to apply antifoluing paint on the prop, which one is good enough? Thanks
That was detailed!! Thx
If I wanted to paint my floating jetski docks, which paint would be recommended? We have the molded plastic (I assume) docks not the black cubes.
Great video. please help me out here. I want to prime my newly built iron grill for the first time and I am close to coastal area 6-7km from sea. Can you please help me what prime I should use. please.
PCA gold is the best performing paint Ive ever used!
I would like to repaint my Royalex canoe. The canoe skin is vinyl, what kind of paint should I use. Thanks
Very informative since I will be doing a "to bare hull" bottom job because, one, the current paint is too thick, and two, I don't know what type of paint is on the hull. One thing I don't know and have heard many opinions, is that how long can the boat stay on the hard after the bottom job is done, until launch day. I'm sure the type of paint makes a difference and that's probably why I've heard so many opinions. The boat has been on the hard for 25 months now, while on a refit, with launch day, probably on 10 months or so. Thank you.
Very informative thanks
What about for a fiberglass ski boat that will be used only a few times a year and taken right out of the water after each use? it's gel coat now but bottom need repair from being cracked and blistered so I'm going to sand past the damage but what should I paint the bottom of the boat with?
+homebrewman231-- I realize your post is a year old, but just in case anyone is interested...
For your described use, antifouling paint per se isn't needed. What you need is a hard, slick surface. Since you mentioned blistering, I'd start with an epoxy barrier coat such as Interprotect 2000 E, and then a final coat of Interlux Thin-film Bottom Paint.
Hi before the paint is necesary paint with primer first ? if so whant the primer and later paint please is a fiberglass boat, thanks.
This will depend specifically on the bottom paint product you will be using. Have you selected a product yet? The link below will help extremely. You can also contact us at 1-800-BOATING to get further assistance for product selection and technical support.

Also, it will depend on the boat surface and if it was already painted and with what kind of paint. Are you wanting to use an Antifouling bottom paint product?
Good 'How To' for the novice.
Lead paint is banned right
*It is time to change bottom paint to " Sea-Speed V10 ". Painting lasts up to 10 years.*
Chris Gray I wasn’t impressed with the Delos results... still lots of growth.
This seemed to be more of a product ad then a tutorial for the novice owner. So many steps missed in the task from start to finish like the initial boat cleaning as it is hauled from the water.
But hey, at least there telling you what type of paints you should use for whatever.
Do not use this on aluminum, it will destroy the aluminum.
Mixing copper and nickel in a liquid cooling loop with aluminum parts will induce galvanic corrosion and the more active aluminum will get damaged. This can also lead to the damage to the nickel plating since it is a thin coating. Corrosion happens regardless in all systems whether they have mixed metals or not.
Bob, thank you for the information! There are a few paints in here, would you mind letting me know which one you are referring to?
West Marine Any and all paints with copper contents.
@@bobmederos270 Thank you! I have taken this information back to our merchant teams.
This is old, didn't even mention the new eco options.
You are right, this is a rather old video. We filmed and uploaded it in 2011. I have brought back your comment to our creative team to see if we can film an updated version of this video. Thank you!
Can you give some examples of the eco options ???
