Incredibly helpful for someone new to working with fiberglass boats!
Thanks Captain Joe. Love your teaching.
You are very welcome! I appreciate your comment!
Thanks for the video. I have 0 knowledge about freshening up boats. I have a tiny 2 seater speed boat my late uncle gave me when I was a kid. It's called the rescue ranger because at 7 I would go out and toe broke down boats and jetskis with it. I'm going to dig in and get it back in the water this year or next. Thanks for explaining everything instead of just a time laps.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share and comment! I wish you the best with your 2 seater restoration!
Video suggestion… a video on how you seal and glass your PVC rigging tubes into your bulkheads and stringers. I noticed you have a unique way of doing it.
Working on that right now, so stay tuned!
Awesome because I’m right about at that point now in my boat build. I’ve used this channel to to get me this far in my first boat build!
Love the video!!!
Glad you liked it!!
Another benefit of switching to a pan is that it thins the pot depth and will slow down the kick. Old boat builder I know used to pour his epoxy and poly into a cookie sheet to thin the depth out.
Yes, that is right, thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for this video. Enjoying watching along. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great videos Captain!

Another video suggestion, what's the best way to repair spider cracks in gelcoat? My boat is full of them!
I will try to do a video on that soon for you guys. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you for all this information I will be doing my boat gelcoat
Glad to help, and best of luck!

Great video man, trying to learn this stuff for my Parker 1801 very thorough and helps a bunch!
Thanks! I have always liked Parker boats. Best of luck with your project!
Fish bump family Awesome video and this is a absolute YES indeed more videos are so helpful tips and experience into the fiberglass/gelcoat application Thanks for your time!
You got it! Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent video. Awesome work. I will definitely follow your guidelines where I’m ready for this. Subscribed and closely watching.
Welcome aboard, and thanks for watching!
Perfect timing, just in the middle of re gelcoating my boat.
Awesome! Best of luck with your project!
I'm getting ready to change my 30 ft boat frome single inboard to twin outboard. I have to build up transom ,close up holes from prop shaft and rudder. Then install gas tank and redo deck. Thanks for all the information in your videos.
You are very welcome! Best of luck with your project!
Good call on the mask. In future videos you might consider mentioning organic vapor cartridges for the paint and acetone. Many folks would not realize that there are mask cartridges specific to the airborne hazard; particulate cartridge for dusty work, organic vapor for paints and chemicals, etc.
I'm planning to gel coat my canoe so I'm paying close attention.
Thank you.
Thanks for the suggestion and I appreciate you watching!
Awesome narrative - show and tell in a real shop environment. Lots of people can relate to your processes which are totally doable as a diy.
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying the videos!
Really enjoying your videos! Lot of useful tips. I too would be really interested in seeing some more heigh end stuff. Sort of close to gel coat out of a mold finish. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate the suggestion!
Love your channel super helpful about to start doing my own fiberglass and get coat attempts on my boat for the first time and definitely ending up on your channel more than anyone elses. going to start with spider cracks and work my way up to making a new bulkhead.
Wow, thanks so much! Best of luck with your project!
I'll be doing the same. I'm that guy that has to repair a fairly deep crack that I think is a impact crack. It's under the boat so I'll be doing a lot of over head work. I plan on using a dremel to grind the crack out to widen it and grind until I hit fiber glass or the crack is gone. I'm hoping the glass is okay so I can just use a polyester filler and gelcoat paste to repair. I was hoping to use gelcoat paste to refill the crack if I don't have to do any glass work. I just don't know if that's okay? It seems like it would be. All I'd be doing is using the same material gelcoat that I removed.
thank you!
You are very welcome!
Great videos. I appreciate when you do cover the tips that would be otherwise obvious to an experienced person, because skipping over the obvious is often the issue that makes a simple project more difficult. The way you are constantly teaching as you go about the project is very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Wow, thanks so much! I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!
Just one suggestion, could you put up metric measurements and temps in the post edit. Most of the world tends to measure in units of 100 and not in hands and feet, horse shoes, acorns. 😂. I'm learning so much so thank you from Australia 🦘🦘🦘
We are working on that for you guys! Thanks for watching
6:37 definitely. Looking at investing in a 1980s trawler "handyman special" and all of the fiberglass, jell coat and repair videos are very useful and informative.
I have always thought it would be great to own a trawler! Glad you are enjoying the the videos, and hope they are helpful with whatever you end up working on!
Great video, I like the pace. To the point descriptions and explanations and don't show every detail dragging the video out for hours.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Wow, this is great. I previously re-gelcoated a 19 ft skiff. Your view on the final end goal and tips along the way were spot on. Keep this up! Very realistic and to the point, love it!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!
I am a complete novice on boats and this is making the project I have taken on much less scary as hell down to just worried, I bought a FairLine Vixen 1979 and to be honest she is in not bad a condition for her age, however at 63 years old, disabled, army veteran my family are thinking I am crazy but they are trying to be nice about it, my 2 adult sons are doing their best to help but both have kids and all the ones with kids know, it is very time consuming and working just becomes, well some of you know how it is, wish me luck and Thank you again for giving us and me the courage to fight the good fight and help the old girl back to condition to sail the seven seas, well one that is really close to the coast if I am honest, the Sea Fox will sail again.
Glad the videos are helping to answer some questions and relieve some of the stress you are having! It is a learning process for sure, even if you have experience with fiberglass, each project will have its own challenges! But it is very rewarding to see a older boat brought back to life! I wish you the very best with your restoration project, and appreciate you watching and commenting!
@@FishBumpTV Thank you.
Capt Joe in my last comment was hoping to see videos working with expanding close cell foam and really love to see some fiberglassing CSM over fir plywood you know old school glassing Thank y'all so much for your sharing family legacy God bless moving forward!
Great suggestion! I will try to add that to the mix. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
I just found the channel and subscribed. I have done work with fiberglass and different fillers in the past. I did not know however that you could repair/regelcoat fiberglass. I have just painted over my repairs or the whole vehicle/boat. I have learned a lot from the videos that I’ve watched already.
Welcome to the channel, and thank you for subscribing!
thanks man
Happy to help
Just ran across your channel. You've got some good content for sure. Alot of people enjoy the learning aspect of it vs just lets say spray with chop and roll it out. Also some people are scared to do the fiberglass/gel coat just for the fact of not knowing. Its fairly simple just knowing the basics as your teaching. Keep on making the videos like this, there very informative.
Thanks, will do! I appreciate your thoughts!
New viewer here, looking for tips on how to do a small metal flake repair on my old ranger. Lots of good advice here, thanks for putting the video together
Welcome to the channel! We don't really do much metal flake work but I will try to do some research on that for you guys. Thanks for watching!
Please keep up the videos content and style
Will do, glad you are enjoying the videos!
Great video. I'm building knowledge to repair my shower surround. The wax additives was eye opening to me. I had to reasearch its purpose.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Getting ready to restore our family’s old bass boat. Would love to see a video on repainting a boat that had metal flake.
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the suggestion!
First time sail boat buyer (fixer upper). Thank you for showing the basics and explaining steps to novice boaters.
Welcome to the channel! Glad to help!
Im fixing a mini dutch spitfire with a 5hp 2stroke motor for my son for this summer and your video's are going to help me allot. thankyou for your simpel straight forward no nonsens explaining of the work i need to put in and some of the costs it will be to fix it the right way.
👌👌👍👍🤙🤙
Nice! Sounds like a great project! Thanks for watching and commenting
Hi from Australia. 🇦🇺
Thanks for watching from Down Under! Much appreciated
Capt Joe Thanks for your reply! Would really like to see how glassing a wood transom properly sealing plywood as well as glassing techniques to get the best possible bond to the sides and bottom of the hull tabing in y'all know old school glassing techniques hopefully y'all have enough time for something like this appreciate y'all sharing family legacy!
Great suggestion! I will try to work on that for you guys.
Thankyou
You are very welcome!
I've been watching your channel and I've learned so much. A few years ago I started on my own boat project and I think it came out fairly well for a newbie. Many older boats have a gelcoat webbing. There are not too many videos on how someone can do webbing on a boat. I think this would be a great little boat to do webbing on. Is there a chance you can make a video on webbing.
Thanks so much for watching! That's a great suggestion, but the owner wanted to go back with a solid Grey. We have done splatter finish many times before, I will video that next time we do one.
Awesome content! Very informative, best of all, No drama for my moma and 100% business 🤘🏻🍻 a lavalier lapel mic would help! But nonetheless, it's great content your putting on! Thanks
Thank You Much! We try not to waste your time with a bunch of Fluff! I appreciate the tip, as the channel grows I can spend a little more money on nicer gear for you guys. A lapel mic would be nice!
Love to see a video on PROPERLY glossing an older wooden boat. You see plenty of guys doing it, well, not necessarily well.
Great suggestion!
great vid .. thanks .. once i open a can of pt. i like to punch a few holes in the valley-of-the-rim .. so that when putting the lid back on .. any pt. left in the rim will be forced back into the bucket .. and not squish/squirt out and away of the bucket ...
Thanks, great tip!
How do you get the shiny look after you gel coat? Is there a clear coat gel coat that applies the same way? Thanks love the channel. I’m a new subscriber. I have a camper with gel coat that is dull and oxidized,. Not sure I can save the black color. Gonna try wet sanding and rubbing it out first.
To get gelcoat to shine, it either has to come out of a mold, or it has to be wet sanded and polished. It is a pretty labor intensive process. I would definitely try restoring your gelcoat first. We have a video detailing the gelcoat restoration process here on the channel. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
I love this video. Thank you for this information. By any chance do you know the make and model of this boat you are working on?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The skiff is a Avalon 15 or 16 foot. They call it a tri hull or a cathedral hull. They were built around Pensacola Fla. I don't think they are still in business, but they built quite a few of them. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
I would love to see a segment on stringer repair and laminating procedure and process with both poly and epoxy. Details on how many layers of material and best way to overlap material
Thanks for the suggestion!
Hello, You asked for comments on content, so I love what you are doing and I am subscribed of course. There is almost nothing out there on chopper gun use. I purchased a small chopper only gun and am building it out to spray resin an catalyst separately. that is 3 streams. I build 1932 and 1934 Ford hot rods. They are small cars, but big enough that I am tired of hand layup. The small chopper system seems like the ticket. I am guessing that a lot of other people would be interested too. Sometimes you don't know that you need something until you see it in action. The first time I saw a CNC milling milling machine running, All I could say for 3 days was WOW !! Now I have 8 CNC machines. Great channel !!
Thanks for watching, glad you are enjoying the videos! I will try to do something with our chopper rig for you guys. I appreciate the suggestion.
You do a great job explaining your application process
Subbed
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Hey fish bump! Love your work and it has really helped me getting through my first boat renovation, im in the stage of doing some gelcoat and and was wondering if it is possible to gelcoat over the old polyester hull? I have mailing some companies here in finland where i am at and theyre saying that putting polyester gelcoat over the old hull is a bad idea and that i should use a primer, what are your suggestions?
Thanks ! Glad you are enjoying the videos all the way from Finland! Yes, you can gelcoat over a polyester hull< it is just a lot of work if you want the gelcoat to be glossy. It would have to be applied to the hull, then wet sanded and polished to make it shine. Some might say that painting with a marine paint system would be easier. Thanks again for watching!
I’m liking this video for my 1967 Hinterhoeller sailboat. The gelcoat is bad. The boat says in a slip year to year. Thanks
Glad to help! Just remember that if you want the gelcoat to be smooth and glossy it will need to be wet sanded and polished out. You might even want to try wet sanding and polishing the old gelcoat first, just to see if it can be restored. We have a video on a dark green gelcoat hull that turned out very good. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Great video thanks Joe. I didn't see you adding any wax to the undercoate gelcoat, but you were still able to get up in the boat to roll out the second coat. Was the undercoate very tacky whilst youo were moving around on it? Did it mark the undercoat at all?
No wax in the first coat, a little tacky, but you can walk on it. With a roller finish it works out fine. Thanks for watching!
Hey Captain Joe, I just bought an '85 Bluewater Coastal Cruiser, she is beautiful! however her name was changed a couple years ago and on the stern and you can clearly see where the old name was removed from in the gelcoat. You can actually feel where the letters were. I would like to see a video of an efficient way to restore the stern so you can't see the previous lettering. My guess is wet sanding? You are doing a great job with your channel. I finally actually want to do fiberglass repair. I hope for you and your family that this Channel is working for you and your company. Great job! Tony
Congrats on your purchase! Yes, wet sanding with a rigid block and 600 grit, then 800 and 1200 to finish. Then compound and polish, followed by wax should do the trick. Best of luck!
So I’m about to start a project on my boat this weekend. I’m ripping out the carpet on the walls and ceiling in the cabin. I know I’m going to have to sand the spray adhesive. Is there any other things I should do or need to know about before I attempt to gel coat the walls and ceiling? I could use any and all the help I can get. This will be my first time doing gel coat
Love all your videos. I have learned a lot. Question: How can I get a no shine finish with gel coat . I will like a flat black color. Thanks.
Glad you are enjoying the videos! If you add wax to your gelcoat, and you don't wetsand or polish it you will have a flat finish. You might want to do a test panel to be sure this is what you ate looking for. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Very informative! thanks, how did you get rid of that orange peel finish? I know that boat will be a workboat, but what if we wanted the shiny smooth finish? thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! It would take a LOT of work to make the gelcoat shine on a skiff like that. Lots of boats in our area have rolled on gelcoat, it is a lot like bedliner material in a truck bed verses shiny paint. I will be making a video on this subject very soon for you guys. Thanks for watching
I have a 2005 whitewater boat cc 17ft .. .. it's need some fiberglass work .. and I need to re-gelcoat it .. i don't have a lot of experience with fiberglass .. your videos are great .. I'd like to know when wax gel coat is appropriate and when it isn't. ..
Glad you are enjoying the videos! You typically add wax on the last coat of gelcoat, this is what helps it cure tack free. Thanks for watching!
Great videos
I would like to see an old school Mako custom restored with a flat top cap
I know someone with one haha
Thanks
Haha, that would be cool! Sounds like a great project!
"This sandpaper still has some value." lol I save 90% of my sandpaper and just down grade it for the next project. Don't get me started on Scotch bright. Nice work.
Haha. You got it! Stuff is just to expensive to throw away until you have gotten all of the good out of it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great content and clear instruction. One question. You said the gel coat leaves an orange peel type texture. Is that also true on smooth surfaces? I can't imagine it is, but want to make sure.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, gelcoat will definitely have some texture to it, especially when rolled on. If you roll it on, then tip it with a brush you will be able to get a smoother surface. If it is spayed in its pure format, you will still have texture. There are some clear additives for gelcoat that helps it to flow out nice, and I will be making a video on one of these clear gelcoat additives very soon. Any of these application methods can be wet sanded, polished and buffed out to a shine if that's what you are looking for, but that requires quite a bit of additional work. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Can you provide the specifics of what roller sleeve you used? Great video!
We use a 3/8 nap roller, cut in half. Corona make a good roller sleeve, but most decent ones will work just fine. I used compressed are to blow any loose fibers away, then wrap it in tape to help pull any more loose fibers away before using it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
This was great! Do you follow the same process if you were painting the exterior of the hull?
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, basically the same process. The gelcoat applied with a roller or brush will have to be wet sanded and polished if you want it to be a glossy finish though. I hope to show that process soon in a video for everyone. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for all u do have learned a lot from you may I ask where can I purchase that 5 gal dark u have there?
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I custom mixed the dark Grey. It is 6 parts light Grey gelcoat from a company called Polynt, and 1 part pure black. I have a video on the channel in our 29 boatbuilding series that shows how I did it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Love your glass content. If you use a short mohair/cashmere or even foam roller AND reduce the gel coat with styrene will it come out much smoother? Would a little less activator help it to flow out like a paint or is is just too thick anyway? More coats but with less sanding for a smooth finish?
Are you not concerned with the deck being slippery when wet?
Gelcoat it much thicker than paint and really doesn't flow out the same. For this particular boat a smooth finish was not important, and the texture that a roller gives the gelcoat provides a decent surface as far as grip. I will be making a video very soon discussing different ways to apply gelcoat to get a smoother finish. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good morning sir, if you could tell me what the name of the knob you use for the hardener is, or where I can buy it, this would be it.
Still watching your channel, I’m doing a total restoration on a 1979 / 21’ center console with a 20” transom. Planning on purchasing a used engine but having an issue finding good used engines with a 20” shaft. My question is what are your thoughts on raising the transom to accept a 25” shaft engine.
Thank you
God Bless and continue on with your journey it’s all good
Yes, a transom can be raised to accept a longer shaft motor, but it has to be done right! Obviously a lot of load is on the transom, and if the job is done incorrectly, bad things could happen! If it is a small boat, and small motor it would not be as critical. I approach that job with some caution. Hope this helps, thanks for Watching!
Got the pro strand at my local NAPA for $50! Yay! Working on my 1986 Champion. I was planning on gel coat on the front and mid deck and I like your method for just rolling it on. We are using DriDek panels instead of carpet. Our top deck deck color is close to a burgundy. What would you recommend for achieving that color? We are not looking to get an exact match.
Good deal! Burgundy is not a super common color for us to use, but you might want to check with spectrum gelcoat, fiberglass warehouse, or FGCI to see if they have a stock gelcoat color that could work for you. Otherwise you would start with a neutral gelcoat base and tint it till you were happy with the color. We are working on getting a gelcoat match video out soon for you guys. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
