“Halloween” 1978: Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter’s Oral History of the Horror Classic - Part 1

  • Why does Michael Myers, the ultimate neighborhood bogeyman, endure? Laurie Strode herself - a.k.a. the super-smart, super-cussy - Jamie Lee Curtis, sat down for an exclusive extended interview with Rotten Tomatoes to talk about the on-screen murderer she calls her “shadow” of 40 years. Joined by ‘Halloween’ director John Carpenter, Curtis walks us through the creation of the slasher classic in fascinating detail, from first landing the part to her first day on set to working with Nick Castle and the creation of Myers’ iconic look. The director and star also reflect on why their creation - he with “the devil’s eyes,” in the words of Dr. Loomis - continues to haunt our nightmares, and soon our theaters, all these years after he first went on his Haddonfield spree.

I think it's great to have Carpenter back for Halloween. The man almost single handedly created a new horror genre..But the man has defiantly made some clunkers..I still dont fully understand Prince of Darkness or Mouth of Madness. And Escape from LA.Ughh.But with Halloween he defiantly had a vision..

Cheddar Cheese In the Mouth of Madness is my favourite Carpenter film ! It's beautifully weird and effectively shocking. But I do agree with you on the other two, especially Escape from (L.A). The latter is surprisingly the only one among his films that looks low-budget or dated.

Not in comparison to the financial gains of the two films, but rather the iconic status and the 'who had any idea these would become what they did?' mentality when they were being made.

I love how she acknowledges that Halloween gave her the career she has now. A lot of actors who get their start in small horror movies turn their nose up at it and won't even discuss it once they make it big. Jamie hasn't done that. She distanced herself from horror so she could try other things in her career but she always said if it wasn't for Halloween and Laurie Strode, she probably wouldn't be what she is today. And she has had a great legacy as an actress. Love her!

I’ve always found Laurie Strode to be a relatable character in the very first film. Likewise to her, I am a teenager living in the Midwest who tends to be very bookish, quiet and introverted. I also hold a somewhat similar friend group, although I never really hung out with a popular cheerleader like Lynda, though I can say that I’ve had many friends similar to Annie. Ultimately though, likewise to Laurie, I’m the quiet kid who hangs out with more extroverted people, and to make her even more relatable she’s also the quiet kid who you would never guess smokes grass. Not only does her relatability kind of make the film more terrifying to me personally, but it also goes to show the timelessness of Carpenter’s film and Curtis’ acting if a 19-year-old guy in 2020 (born very-early 2001) can relate to a teenager from a 1978 film

Things you can survive....... being shot, stabed, hit by a car, electrocuted, poisons, a leg break a leg or arm getting cut off, drowning and being burned ones throat being cut, boiling water a shark attack. How did he return after your sister cuts you head clean off? Did he have a twin that was helping him? Was he one of an octuplets and they kept thinking that it Michael? It was one of the others brothers or all of the octuplet brothers. Magicly she decapitated an innocent man.. Okay. I don't know when I am going to see this but I will see it. The key to all of this was the iconic jamie lee cutis performance-
YOU CARED ABOUT LAURIE & rooted for her because of JAMIE LEE CURTIS!! Arguably more iconic performance than sissy spacek in Carrie & a precursor to ALIENS, the Terminator, Scream, etc...
    (Poor Laurie,
her friends are DEAD because of her stalker!! RUN 🏃🏃🏃)

I appreciate her candidness, but I don't agree with her undercutting what she says about the primal psychology about why Myers endures. Because she is right about that faceless projection, I don't know why she acts like what she said is nonsense.
