Just stumbled across you guys. I’m a Scot who hitch round SA in 1992 for 3 months in my kilt and fell in love with your beautiful country. I’ve been back a few times - last time we took a Hilux with roof tent up into Botswana for a month which was amazing. Looking forward to sharing your adventures - thank you.

    ACCC is a great rig.
IMO for 2 people - you should have got the long box truck & 6' camper.
U should put the fridge in the rear passenger side so it can be accessed when you are inside & from the side canopy door & from the rear door. To have is front and centre means each and every time you need a beer (et al) you will have to go into the camper. That will get real old real quick.

Can't fault Alu-Cab they really have some great products but there is nothing like a Bushlapa. You guys are young as you get older climbing in, out, up and down from tents or having to pack up and secure your things just to go for a game drive or 4x4 route becomes a mission every time. Simple and easier is what it's all about. Happy adventures and I wish you all the best on your travels.

Great Video!! Good idea to do an extensive trip and find out what works and what does not work.
We went on a trip through Zimbabwe and Botswana when we first got our Canopy Camper (Christened "Hilux Hotel" as it is that comfortable, and works for both English and Afrikaans..) and also did everything temporary on that trip. Just to make up our minds on what would work best.
It is now two years later and we find we are still making adjustments as we go along.
At some stage check the back filler plates for waterproofing as we found that after our first trip we needed to re-seal some of the mounting bolts as there were some water leaks. Just spray with a hosepipe and some pressure to check.
We also found that it is worthwhile leaving a small space open at the back in the centre so that you can still access the tent and bed area even when you have all your gear (Chairs etc.) loaded in the back. It does happen sometimes that you have a short overnight stop and do not want to unload these items, before getting to bed. (Just some suggestions to consider..)
We will be following this series with great interest and am sure we will learn a lot and incorporate some of your ideas!!!😉

I want to buy a 2006 scion xb and “off-road-ify” it somehow I like the boxy shape of the vehicle I think that makes for a good starting canvas in regards to space utilization it’s just tough finding one in good shape for a good price I guess that go’s for anything used right haha

Fuel economy on the whole trip (including a lot of low range 4x4 stuff) was under 12L/100km. Which is more or less the same as my previous setup. And no, unfortunately you can’t easily take it on and off.

Hi Guys. Nice video and all the best. We also have a Hilux that we have very much converted and added onto. Dont you please want to address the concerns and stress of driving a Hilux in South Africa? We that to be a major problem for us at the moment. We are very invested into the vehicle but scared to drive around in it? What is your view and the viewers view on modification and hijack risk? Does it reduce? What else can be done to reduce hijack risk?

While it’s a marvellous canopy camper. However, why oh why does anyone want it in black ! Can you imagine how hot that’s going to get ! All that heat gets absorbed by everything inside and will surely make it quite unpleasant to sleep in it. Also, how much harder does the fridge have to work ! Exit battery life.
