- Did you know many breast cancer survivors I've talked to actually hate breast cancer awareness month? October is frequently called "Pinktober" because of all of the "pink washing" and many cancer patients urge others to "think before you pink."

My father passed August 2023 from Head and neck cancer. My mother is fighting stage 4 Ovarian cancer. There is hardly anyone that is aware of the other cancers that people deal with daily. I support everyone fighting. Not an easy battle period.

I totally agree with you Samantha 💯 I too suggest people donate to METAvivor. Of course I’m stage 4 MBC too, 8 years and counting. Pink washing is a little triggering to me. I never thought 💭 it was at first till I became stage 4 and I’m learning more about which organizations truly donate to research. Obviously whatever gets people to go get checked and schedule their mammograms is vital. You’re absolutely glowing and wishing you well during your pregnancy journey. Thanks for sharing. As a more introverted and private breast cancer survivor all the pink just feels overwhelming and commercialized. I also personally didn’t ring the bell after I was finished w treatment. I respect that it’s an important moment for some but for me it felt loud and systematic. I’m glad we receive so much funding but I do also feel for other cancers that aren’t popularized.
I hate the bell. Some people don’t get to ring it and I hated hearing it while I was going through treatment. I only rang it because it made other people happy and even then I only did 1 “ding”
I didn’t ring the bell because I have Metastatic Breast Cancer.

I'm a survivor. I don't hate Pinktober, maybe because I love the color pink lol, but I have become more informed on which organizations are worthy of support. Some of them profit off of pretending to support those with our disease, others actually use their donations to fund research and charity programs for struggling patients. I make sure to support the worthy causes, the ones that actually help patients.
I agree. I am a survivor also. I love Pinktober. I don't HATE anything anymore. Cancer changed my attitude for EVERYTHING. I think it is wonderful to celebrate the survivors of anything and to spread awareness is far more important than a "feeling" someone may be triggered by. Get people help anyway you can. Plus I loooove the color pink.
I don’t hate pinktober either. My dad died from metastasis skin cancer, my best friend died from neuro endocrine cancer, and my other really good friend died from non small cell lung cancer. They have a month for rare cancer awareness. They have a month for lung cancer. It’s up to those who fight or families, etc to make those disease known in memory of their loved one or those fighting.
Yep, totally agree with you on everything. I'm a 2 time breast cancer survivor. I like to donate directly to my cancer center/oncologist's office. Things like hats, coupons for food at the hospital, afghan blankets, prepaid cards for gasoline etc. are appreciated by most patients. Thanks for doing the video. Looking forward to more baby updates. Grow baby grow!

Interesting perspective. My son is a childhood leukemia survivor. September is childhood cancer month. My mom was a breast cancer survivor for 15 years. Prayers that you have a healthy pregnancy and a long, happy life. Can't wait to see your sweet, little baby.

My brother sent me one of those stupid FB games to "raise breast cancer awareness". FFS - I'm a bc survivor - I do not need to be sent pointless FB "games" which do nothing except irritate everyone.

I live in Philly and cheese steaks are big here. So the famous cheese steak places have turned their cheese wiz pink for the month. 🤔

I had cancer on my spine 2 years ago, and triple neg breast cancer now, but before i ever had cancer i thought breast cancer is the St. Jude of cancers meaning it monopoloizes the attention, money etc from all other cancers. St. Jude is awesome but there are so many other cancer programs to give to also that are forgotten. I love Pinktober , i always did , and i always purchased pink things and always will, its very simple if you dont like it dont buy it, if you had ANY cancer, there are a lot more"triggering" things than seeing pink around.How about the cancer medicine commercials, should we get rid of those because people are reminded when they watch tv? Its part of life , you have to deal with it, it will help a lot of people to see these things and real PTSD is not just seeing something that gives you a bad memory its a little more involved than that. I think most enjoy Pinktober and if some dont , cool thats their opinion, thats what makes the world go round .. The people that are triggered should be glad that they are around to see it nevermind seeeing pink around and being bothered about it. Just being alive to see it they should be grateful for,i think if you had any type of cancer, you have lifelong reminders of the constant checking for reoccurrence and worry about that, its just par for the course , its terrible but you have to deal with many other bad memories than seeing pink. I think its great and I think other cancers should get their month and color/ meaning, and cause represented just the same though .Like all organizations, some are legit and some are not, i think people know that just a pink color doesnt mean the money is used the way its supposed to be, if your worried, make sure you do your research before buying or donating.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion on this. If you go back to the reason for October being breast cancer awareness month it was to spread the message get checked, have your love one checked. I have known many women who did their first mammograms in October and were diagnosed early because of the pink.

What’s getting diagnosed early mean? How early is early enough. Many people were diagnosed early and have died or live with stage 4 later on. Part of the problem is just what you’ve said: the myth that awareness equals early equals you can’t die from breast cancer. Wrong. Pink creates the myth of breast cancer being a pretty trivial curable cancer. As or “I’m a survivor”, you can never know that it hasn’t already spread and it can recur years later. Pink creates this myth too. Breast cancer isn’t a girly feminine cancer that plays nice. It’s a cunning deadly cancer that doesn’t deserve the pink image
@@amandal7373 I understand the argument about getting diagnosed early. It's something like 30% of people diagnosed in the early stages of breast cancer, go on to later have stage 4. However, that still leaves 70% that don't, so most of those people do benefit from finding their cancer in the early stages. While it doesn't work on an individual basis (some people still die and it's not their fault), I do believe it saves more people in the long run when we encourage people to get checked as soon as they can
I’m not getting caught up in the trap of pinkness. If people are made to be aware of their bodies and to check in and have regular check ups that is good.
Do not think the pink ribbon implies automatic good life
I feel that it says we can reach a large amt of women and men to check their bodies.
Also, I am a survivor. I have been i remission got 20 years this February. I will never be cured but I do everything I can to be in remission.
Lets not be upset with peoples beliefs, think of the good!!!

God I hate it!
I'm 27 and a survivor of a rare form of lymphoma. While I support all cancer survivors I have unfortunately grown to hate October because while blood cancers are very very common they don't recieve nearly the support that breast cancer gets and in October it very much feels thrown in my face. When my cancer came back last yr, I was AT MY CANCER CENTER waiting for bloodwork and another patients wife told me "on Thursdays you're supposed to WEAR PINK" and I replied "well I don't have fucking breast cancer I have lymphoma". I probably should have been nicer, but it just bothers me.
I DESPISE it!!!!! I have deep fear of all things medical, and have had 3 breast biopsies (all negative, praise God). Reminding me of breast cancer every 10 minutes is triggering. I don’t want to be reminded while trying to relax watching a tv show. It induces panic attacks and causes me to AVOID mammograms out of fear and PTSD. And don’t get me started about the money making end of it. Aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!😤

well, it does bring a lot of money in for research. Perhaps once breast cancer is 100% treatable, they will move onto another cancer. Perhaps prostate cancer (could be a blue ribbon).
That would be great! I believe prostate cancer is a light blue ribbon :)
Except, in most cases, it does not go to research. Instead the executives are paid VERY well.

My well meaning mom and others bombard her with ribbons and now she hates the color pink. She’s not trying to forget but she doesn’t want to live it all over again for a straight month.
