Your experience with Rich sounds quite accurate. You wait while the dude looks up your stuff on Discogs. And they almost always start on the high end. But there’s treasure there for sure!!!

My parents live in Las Vegas and when I’m there I like to check out the record market. I’ll hit up record shops and monitor OfferUp. There are some pretty good record stores. I was anticipating your review of some shops that I’ve visited. But you actually went to one of the few I haven’t been to. I’ll have to go. And I am glad you showed it warts and all because I might have been turned off by the setting. But your experience has educated me. Record City is a similar feel though it’s in a run down retail unit. But it’s hoarder level records. I’d say only half the records are organized in the bins. The rest are in stock rooms or stuffed below record shelving in bins. There are lots of gems if you dig. Zia is like a mini Amoeba Records. Reminiscent of old Tower Records. Wide open place very organized. It focuses on records, but really any dead or dying media format has a section. Those would be some more to visit when you go back. A couple of things about that market; It has the largest Hawaiian population outside the islands. I’m always finding legit Hawaiian records there. Second, the evolution of nightclubs over the last 50 years were in full swing in Las Vegas. Go through 12” bins! Lots of DJ only 12” singles and great disco, dance, house, and pop. I’m in LA so I’m a bit spoiled. But each local market has its history that influences what one finds in a record shop. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I was there in 2007 and I didn't enjoy the experience at all. Discogs wasn't 'in force' when I went there, the guy looked up (I think) a Record Collector book. I hated the way the LPs were up in shelves after about 15 minutes my neck was getting sore from turning my head sideways to read the spine. Some of the shelves were tightly packed so it wasn't easy to pull out an LP to check it out. I did get two LPs for about $20 each. Glad to hear he is still around!
Have not been to Vegas but I would check out Wax Trax. Don't typically like unpriced stock and Discogs pricing on the spot but pretty cool that they have such deep inventory so I would spend some time there. Nice pickup on that Herbie and the UK London Calling, would probably pay up for that too. Hope all is well Tim!
I didn’t know about the Billy Joel RL makes for good treasure hunting. Glad you got the Clash London Calling UK looks like a great vacation! I’m on a Hi Fi kick this summer maybe too much punch Lol I picked up another HK 730 mint restored for 300 and recently stumbled across a Sansui 8080DB for 200 owner at the shop couldn’t get it working? Was a simple fix working perfectly redoing the case with real wood walnut veneer, not actually me but by technician who is absolutely amazing! Thank You

Good times. I brought cash when I saw Rich Rosen and did a bit of haggling as well. They gave a low price on an expensive version and a high price on a cheaper version both of which I paid. I didn’t feel comfortable to do my own research right in front of him so I just paid him. I don’t say John Meyer is carrying on the legacy. I see him more as a hired gun and I’ve never liked him, but I like him better as he does a good job with the show. I saw them in 94 in Seattle and I’ve collected the Vinyl and the bootlegs and the posters for many years
Hi Chris, thanks for watching. Mayer has really matured since his "tabloid" days and I agree, he does well with the catalog. I know he's a controversial subject though...

@@VinylPiper ;Interesting points. I saw the Dead with Jerry a number of times through the 80's, and then for the last time in 1992. I haven't really followed Dead & Co until recently, but now have seen them 5 times. I have to say I feel he can really channel Jerry's style and tone. But then at times he will bring a stronger, rougher more aggressive tone that Jerry never was into. In some ways I think it adds to the music! 💪

I own a WLP U.S. London Calling. Sounds good but whatever. That Aretha is the only one on vinyl I own. I think Ken Booth did a nice cover of the title track.
Great video, Tim! We have a record shop outside Boston that also is very much of the wax-trax type shopping experience for records. As far as I know, Billy Joel "The Stranger" was mastered first by Robert Ludwig. Sales skyrocketed and Ted Jensen did a mastering as well, which ended up being the most common pressed version, which I never cared for. I found it to be thin and borderline shrill in certain passages/songs. The RL/Masterdisk is by far the better pressing to have. Congrats on the Clash UK "London Calling" - I was fortunate enough to find an EX/NM- UK pressing w/TimTom mastering for about $150. a year or so ago- these copies sound incredible- full bodied, lots of slam, smooth overall but punchy.
It’s usually a case by case basis, requires research. In some cases, club pressings were not cut by original mastering engineer and/or pressed on inferior vinyl.
Tim is correct but just to add more context. Many club pressings used their own metal parts so like he said, you can get a clean hot stamper at times as well. Not all clubs used different mastering so do your homework
If you look at teh pricing for club pressings on Discogs they are usually lower than the commercial pressings, I think because of the fear of lower quality pressings and materials. Like anything I am sure it is always a case by case experience.

LUDWIG IS A GENIUS AT THE CUTTING LATHE!

Actually $125 for a decent OG UK London Calling is about right. I paid that exact amount for an EX wax / VG+ copy recently.
