Full interview: Catching up with Phish ahead of four night residency at Las Vegas's Sphere

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio spoke to CBS's Kris Van Cleave about preparing for the unique shows and what the band's unlikely path to success has looked like.

Im sad that their music doesn’t resonate with me the way it used to, but I’m forever grateful for the experiences I’ve had because of their music and the adventures that came with chasing it for a few decades. I’m legitimately proud of them for continuing to do what they do.
Meaning…. You can never hear again what you heard from them in 1995-98?
@@mpow7153 Ha! Those are my years. First show year (95) and year I did Europe Tour (98). 99 I did all summer and most of fall, but I'll tell you, I saw them at Nutter Center (first time back since 97 for me), and they blew me away. These Sphere shows have been off the hook as well.

@@JBT42884 yeah, I hit Phoenix through Gorge, there were magical moments. But I feel like night to night wasn’t as consistent as Feb until they hit Burgettstown. And then I hit every single show from 11/28/03 to Coventry…12/1/03 and Miami stand up to almost any Phish ever.
But still, I only consider a period of Phish truly awesome if it’s 50%+ insane nights.
Thank you Phish. You guys continue to bring so much joy to my life! Wasnt able to catch you guys this time at the sphere. Hopefully next go around! 😎
he is just the most likable guy on the planet.
There is no more enviable band history and journey that I can think of than Phish. What they have, and what they have accomplished is exceedingly rare and precious. Nigh unto impossible. But they seem to have been ‘blessed by God’, as it were.
What they have in each other, their music, their career and their fans is pure gold; as good or better than any other band I could think of.
The homespun, grassroots side. The aspect of how they’ve made their own way, separate from the machinery and trappings of the industry. Their inimitable craft as musical artists. Their pineal-gland-opening creative improvisation and deft spontaneity, as the quintessential jamband of choice. Their songwriting (2nd only to the Beatles in my mind). Their loving community of fans.
All of THAT IS SUCCESS!!!
Though little to no formal limelight accolades, awards, or recognition… though little to no airplay, Top 40 presence, or even familiarity… I can think of no other band who has been, or will be more “successful”.
Seeing them age gracefully just makes this phan feel at once: beyond proud of them, and grateful for them.

Trey has come a long way. It makes me happy to see that he's at his best as he gets older. There were some big hurdles for him to cross, but he handled it with grace, and now he's in a good place. It still blows my mind how massive the Phish community is while flying under the radar for the most part.

I went to a Phish concert in Raleigh back in...02? I ate shrooms and got lost in the bathroom. And chalk dust came on and I'm like get me the fk out this bathroom so I can go groove. There were so many ppl. Those were the days

Love Phish so much!!! The healing and pleasure they bring to their Phans and Supporters can not be understated!!! I honestly I want to run away with Phish and go on tour forever :) I am working on it ahah :) For now, I have to keep my job... :)

poor guy had no clue how to interview Trey. His boss handed him a piece of paper that said "Phish is playing the Sphere, its a big deal, they don't play the same show twice, Trey is a good guitarist. Go talk to him." lol
If the interviewer had a broad knowledge of Phish, he would have felt that he had to show how knowledgeable he was, and he would have done a lot of the talking. Instead, he asked very simple questions and let Trey talk.
Mr. Van Cleave does a fine job with this interview. He shuts up and lets the subject speak. That is not always the case.
This guy could teach classes to Jimmy Fallon, Howard Stern, Eddie Trunk or Oprah who inject their own silly agenda.

He did ask the right question, the first question trey and phish and team asked themselves: could they put on a great show with the visuals even though they don’t plan the shows out in detail

Phish can be amazing its fun ,not spiritual like jerry Garcia show. I get the giggles at a phish show ,and tear up at dead shows.
I don't think any other band could do what Jerry Garcia and the Dead did. Phish has a lot of the same elements, but the Dead's magic can not be duplicated.
I think Phish got to Jerry's level a few times in their 40 year career but it was never their wheelhouse or their goal. I think they are absolutely a spiritual band, but not like Jerry. In many ways they surpassed Jerry but it was always with intelligence and grace. Jerry had a suicidal masochism that was the reason he became a martyr above the rest of his bandmates but also gave his music real true wild abandon. Trey dodged that bullet pretty early on, he was only on opioids/heroin for 6 years so the demons couldnt take hold of his core like they did with Jerry.
Jerry had the angel of death on his shoulder. He was marked from childhood with his missing finger. Phish is a celebration of life. I think theyre equally important and give context to one another.
Together with Miles Davis and Jimi I think Jerry and Phish represent the peak of all improvised music throughout history

These four subsystems are called "spheres." Specifically, they are the "lithosphere" (land), "hydrosphere" (water), "biosphere" (living things), and "atmosphere" (air). Each of these four spheres can be further divided into sub-spheres. So we know now we are getting living creatures tomorrow almost for certain as the theme

I never looked back from then on.
When Jerry passed away I was full on Phish shows. Still fantastic today. Kaboom 👊

Im not into acting on stage such as NYE with the Gamehenge and thats too much. I am glad they push boundaries of rock and conciousness. If i want to see a play i will go to one. The clones were obnoxious during that NYE performance. The last good type of "play" was Halloween 2014 with the hauntedhouse. That was an excellent performance without people doing broadway.
